One name linked to OF Dylan Carlson if the #STLCards deal him today is #Nats RHP Dylan Floro, per a source.
Floro, 33, won a World Series with the Dodgers in ‘20 and he’s pitched for six teams. He gave up Paul Goldschmidt’s walk-off HR on Sunday — his first HR allowed in ‘24.

Yah, that checks many boxes. Salary wash, moving on from Carlsons future arbs, and it’s a “win now” move for the FO, and it would be. He could close, or easily slot at set-up.

If Carlson goes to LAA, a reunion with reliever Luis Garcia, 37, could be in the works. He’s 5-1 with 4 saves in 45 games with LAA in ‘24.

I hate the idea of giving Carlson away for an older relief pitcher. I like Floro, but how much actual value does that add to our bullpen? It essentially just pushes John King into pitching when we are down by 2 or more. Maybe we win 1 more game coming from behind???? Is that worth the trade off of Carlson going to AAA to try to get right for the next couple seasons? To me, no way.
I don’t know how many more games we would win but having more high end bullpen depth would help eliminate some of those situations when Ollie has to bring in the “B” team during a tight game because the “A” team is not available.
Trading 2+ years of Carlson for 2 months of a reliever seems silly on the surface but the truth is that Carlson’s value is almost zero and I think the Cardinals like the idea of not paying his arb 2 and arb 3 years. It is amazing how cost conscious they are being with this deadline. They must really feel that their revenue forecast is in the dumpster.
I do agree that they are behaving like they are completely out of payroll room. But still, 2 months of Floro? There’s not much upside there. More upside than Carlson provides for the next 2 months I guess. But I’m pretty sure we’re going to regret that return.
Right now Libby and Roycroft are struggling? and could be sent down. If they use a 5man, Andre is already back in the pen? and, the possible addition of a Floro type, backfills the temporary demotions above.

Where we differ J, is the impact of these possible transactions. I’d really like this swap.All true JJ although I’d bet Andre goes to Memphis to keep starting in case of injury. That would correspond with the Fredde transaction. Look for Bosiokovic to be then DFA’d. One of Roycroft or Leahy probably gets demoted for Floro assuming he comes aboard. The trouble with that move is we’re going to be one over on the 40-man already with McGreevey coming up so we’d need to move someone else out in addition to Bosiokovic if Carlson is traded for a reliever. I’m not sure who that would be. Maybe Fermin?
17th round pick back in 2018. He was a long-time starter who stalled out in AA. They switched him to full-time relief last season and he came to ST and impressed with his fastball velocity. He ended up throwing several big league innings last season with mediocre results. The Cardinals eventually DFA’d him in a roster crunch. He pitched well in Memphis this season and got added back to the 40-man and called back up. He’s a blue collar middle relief guy at this point with maybe a little upside where in a perfect world he eventually becomes a setup guy. Not bad for a 17th rounder.
Not bad at all. Spotty work because he has been on the Memphis shuttle. He gets outs and hasn’t shown a bad handedness split this season.
The deal for Pham and Fedde not sure are enough to do anything except remain at .500…, they really need more offense and could use a really good releif pitcher.
Floro is solid but I’d almost rather go after Fairbanks….him and Helsley could be pretty solid for the 8th and 9th… of course no telling what the Rays would want in that trade.
Leahy has rebounded this year better than I thought he would. I remember last year when he hit Patrick Wisdom in the head at Wrigley and got sent down soon thereafter. I figured that might ruin his confidence but he has put together a solid season this year.
Anyway the Cards have about 50 mintues to add another reliever or some other player.
Carlson is almost certainly getting traded as Pham is being activated tonight and they need a roster spot. The question is for who? I’m ok if it’s a minor league prospect. I still want more than a 2-month rental.

After adding Fedde, Pham, and Armstrong to the 26 man while subtracting Carlson (Edman was not on the 26 man) we stand at 15 pitchers and 13 position players, so two pitchers will need to go. In addition to that McGreevy is coming up to pitch tomorrow night’s game.
I expected Carlson to be traded. I wanted him to stick here, but honestly he probably needs a change of scenery. I expect him to end up being an average starter for the Rays and their coaching.
If my math is correct all of the Cardinal deadline deals were revenue neutral. They did not add any payroll at all.
If we truly only got 2 months of Shawn Armstrong for Carlson then I hate this trade to the 1000th degree. Carlson may never live up to any kind of potential, but I have little doubt the Rays will turn him into at least an average big leaguer and we will look silly. Plus, Armstrong will replace Roycroft or Leahy and probably be worse. Ugh.
