I hope Povich is included at least. Stats aren’t great this year but I’d take him. I like McDermott too.

    Per MLBTradeRumors:
Both likely slot in 15-20 in the Cardinals system per MLB.com.

“I hope Povich is included at least.”

I’ll take Shirley but not Maury.

    “Mikolas
    Matz
    Liberatore
    Pallante
    Woodford
    McGreevy
    Thompson
    Graceffo”

That’s a nightmare scenario for Opening Day, 2024. Never happen. With Liberatore physically compromised (his fastball is down by 3-4 MPH from just three months ago), there isn’t anyone on that list besides Mikolas who I’d bet even money could throw 150 major league innings next year with a sub-4.00 ERA.

“That would be a head scratcher if we don’t trade Flaherty. Surely the return would be better than the extra draft pick.”

No draft pick at all as compensation unless a free agent signs for at least 55 million bucks. And nobody is giving that kind of dough to Jack. So moot point on that score.

“Doesn’t matter who our pitchers will be until we get a pitching coach who has experience as a pitching coach!”

You got that right. And a new manager and starting backstop as well.

Mo got good value for the rentals. Good luck to the new guys. Best wishes to the former Cardinals.

The backstop is not the problem. The problem was all of our main pitchers went to the WBC and did not get time with the backstop. Plus they were spoiled by Yadi and no matter who came in to replace Yadi, all of you would be saying the same thing!

Get over it! Contreras is our catcher and you will see he will be just fine.

Mo did get good value. Clearly they weren’t going to get an established starter for a rental, though I’d hoped they would get one for a rental plus. But we didn’t trade anyone whose contract wasn’t up (save DeJong, if we had wanted to take the option). Seems like both Hudson and Liberatore will be starters the rest of the way, perhaps in the hope that one can be fifth starter next year. If that works, then they need two more starters, and I’d assume at least one would come by trade. We’ll see in the offseason if Mo can pull it off. I’d think the presence of four other starters would make it easier to land whatever free agent we pursue since it would assure a bit more that we are pushing to contend next year.

I give it a “C+”. Return for Hicks was good, Montgomery and Stratton was OK if Roby is healthy it’s good. Moved DeJong for anything is good. Return for Flaherty was light, but he’s a pending free agent so maybe the offers just weren’t there. But the fact Contreras/Herrera are still on the roster, the fact O’Neill is still on the roster, the fact Baker is still on the roster are MAJOR let downs to me. I’m not disappointed Edman is still around, I like him, but he paired with Flaherty or Flaherty and O’Neill to me would have netted something more substantial and cleaned out a lot of the redundancy on the roster.
This was essentially just trade the pending free agents for what we can and keep doing the same ol same ol. Didn’t step out and make any significant change. So C+ for “standing pat”

I generally agree that Mo got a good (not great) return for the obvious trade candidates. He basically did the bare minimum you would expect for a selling team. I think, right or wrong, Mo believes the trade deadline is the most expensive time to “buy” and is likely looking to make the win now moves in the offseason when it’s relatively cheaper as compared to the trade deadline for the players you mentioned above. Again, I don’t know if it’s right, but it lines up with what Mo has said and done in the past.

If it’s the most expensive time to buy then it’s the best time to sell the redundancy on your roster.

The redundancy has to be something a contender wants. They want upgrades, not more of what they more or less already have. They already have spare parts and did not need ours.

YOu are all forgetting that there are TWO sides in the trade world. There is a lot of negotiating happening between clubs and the fact remains that none of us were privy to any of the conversations. Don’t get me wrong! I loathe Mozeliak like the next guy but until you know the whole story (which none of us ever will) all you are doing is stating your opinion based on your feelings and not fact!

Mo basically ruined Contreras trade value as a catcher, with catchergate, even if Mo was the only GM who didn’t recognize Contreras shortcomings behind the plate.

He now has to find a buyer of Contreras bat, who also has a pitcher with similar guaranteed $ as a trade partner. No easy feat when you have a handful of players you need to move before the deadline.

I based it on fact. He did good, not great on the pending free agents, I think the return for Flaherty was light but maybe the offers weren’t there. But there was no shake up. The value of Baker or Herrera probably won’t be higher, but there was no outside the box thinking. It was essentially just a “we trust our process and got something for what we were going to lose. We think the players we have can contend in 2024 and this season was just a series of a lot of bad luck.”

“Get over it! Contreras is our catcher and you will see he will be just fine.”

Recall that Contreras was so bad behind the plate that Wainwright and Flaherty went to Marmol and the front office in May and said Willson could not continue to catch unless he profoundly changed something about how he was operating behind the dish.

Whether he was tipping pitches, calling bad sequences, of just being horribly predictable, he was doing something very, very wrong. Because I’ve followed this sport for half a century and have NEVER heard of a veteran catcher being removed at the request of his pitching staff. Then more recently Mikolas was using the pitch-com doohickey to call his own pitches because he didn’t trust Contreras to do so. This is obviously extremely unusual as well.

The team’s ERA with Contreras behind the plate is nearly 5.00, which is of course terrible.
The team’s record when he starts at catcher is 33-49. With Knizner or Herrera it’s 14-11.

If you’d like me to “get over it” you’ll need to provide at least one piece of evidence in favor of Contreras’ performance behind the plate this season — beside his throwing arm. Not his hitting. Not his record in Chicago. Just some tiny scrap of anecdotal or statistical evidence is all I ask.

I say he’s terrible and must go, if there’s any way possible. Same with Marmol, and same with Blake. And same with Mo, if he doesn’t trade from the ridiculous middle infield surplus this winter to fix the awful pitching.

No surprises at all…Not one. Everyone knew that Montgomery, Flaherty and Dejong would be gone and no one cares about Stratton. I’d have paid a dollar towards both Flaherty and DeJong’s ticket out of town, but Monty will be missed by this fan. If any indeed occur, I’d guess that the impact trades or aquisitions probably won’t surface until December.
