The Cardinals took one of the best pitchers in the draft with their 20th-round selection, knowing he wouldn’t sign. Every team passed on the kid. That’s wasteful. If you liked the kid, draft him and pay him. They don’t always draft the best player. There’s a ton of evidence that points that out.
July 31, 2023 at 5:06 pm #230020Just making an assessment based off the last 12 years of non-results. They do not draft top level pitchers as they simply do not want to spend the money, it’s a philosophy that has proved for a long time now doesn’t work. Any other team that was serious about actually contending for a WS title, would fire Mo and his philosophy. But Mo works out for the DeWitt’s who are in it for the money, if we happen to win with what we have, great, if not, we draw the second most fans in the NL each year and that translates to profits when your payroll is low. Been a Cardinals fan my whole life and not much as far as a win philosophy has changed. If we win with what we put out there, good deal, if not, we tried.
July 31, 2023 at 5:32 pm #230023Well, today was quiet so hopefully at least 1 and maybe 2 more deals tomorrow……

jj-cf-stlParticipantWell said Brock, profits before winning.
July 31, 2023 at 6:22 pm #230034You have to spend more or be smarter, or both. You can’t be neither.
July 31, 2023 at 8:27 pm #230046More national media stupidity. Even after Mo says Goldy isn’t going to be traded, FOX Sports says this.
Stop sending this to me. Mo said definitively yesterday on KMOX the #STLCards are not trading Goldy. https://t.co/uDl4ueQTkK

July 31, 2023 at 8:58 pm #230050Since its been a slow news day, I decided to read the Fox article to see what’s there. Basically, either their info is old and they did not get the memo about Mo’s statement, or Mo’s statement is not as absolute as it sounds. The familiar argument was made for dealing Goldy, haul of controllable pitching and open up 1B for Walker, who is a defensive disaster in OF.
Here are a few sound bytes, nothing novel, but perhaps some interest in that it provides a look at how the Cardinals org is presently perceived by the non-homer national media:
“For a team unfamiliar with dumping at the deadline, it’s been a straightforward approach: free-agents-to-be sent off to contenders for prospects.”
” … many around the game believe the Cardinals’ approach to team-building has grown stale and overly conservative”.
“Goldschmidt remains an incredibly valuable trade chip in part because there are so few impact bats available.”
“While other teams taught their arms to build velocity and collect strikeouts, the Cards went for a more retro, strike-focused approach. That hasn’t worked.”
“the team clearly doesn’t have a great feel for pitching. “

ParticipantWell I totally agree this organization do doesn’t know how to improve the pitching situation.
August 1, 2023 at 6:59 am #230063If Flaherty and DeJong are still on the team by tonight’s game, Mo officially failed.
August 1, 2023 at 7:24 am #230064Is giving Flaherty a qualifying offer a backup option?
August 1, 2023 at 7:32 am #230065If they don’t move him they probably would so when he goes to another team the Cards at least get a draft pick
Although, unless he improves – if he accepted the QO they would be paying about 4x as much for about what he gave them this year ….

ParticipantWhen the Cards draft a pitcher high, he is usually drafted right where the mock drafts say he will be drafted.
And the Cards pay a bonus right in line with that slot. Anyone saying the Cards are “cheap” at draft time is wrong.August 1, 2023 at 8:01 am #230068Well, I hope Mo is up and at ’em this morning.
August 1, 2023 at 8:03 am #230069I’ve been up ALL night long. My Insomnia just doesn’t want to go away. Did not get one wink.
I should have been on the phone making deals.
August 1, 2023 at 8:15 am #230070Any thoughts or articles read as to where the following could land?
Flaherty- several options
DeJong- Giants and maybe Toronto now
Carlson- Yankees I’ve read
O’Neill
Yepez
Baker
Gomez
Edman
BurlesonThe Indians seem like a good trade partner for a few of the bats….
August 1, 2023 at 8:29 am #230071The click bait worked to perfection…
August 1, 2023 at 9:51 am #230074The annual “national media and reporters are out to cause mayhem” discussion. Good grief. Let’s just try to enjoy deadline today because tomorrow we will be reminded that the next two months will be a boring slog as we watch other teams, including the irritating Cubs, go for the playoff sprint.
August 1, 2023 at 9:52 am #230075I expect Flaherty, DeJong, and Carlson to get moved today.
Possibly a few others.
August 1, 2023 at 10:37 am #230083Do some folks really enjoy the trade deadline? I don’t care for the crazy talk, but like action. To that end, Matt Holliday (2009) might have been the last time the Cardinals made a truly significant deadline move. And of course, they were buyers in those days… Waiting to see who is sold off isn’t the greatest of thrills for me. But sometimes you have to take a step or two backward in the present to move ahead later.
August 1, 2023 at 10:53 am #230086Sandy’s avg 6.5 innings per start would be nice though. I happened to notice Austin Gomber has 10 quality starts to Alcantera’s 9 and Mikolas’s 8. Sigh.
August 1, 2023 at 11:01 am #230087Cardinals have been active in trade conversations last night and this morning. They're willing to move multiple bats.
Most frequent names mentioned: Paul DeJong, Alec Burleson and Dylan Carlson.
Trade status of Tommy Edman, on the IL with right wrist inflammation, is unclear.

August 1, 2023 at 11:10 am #230088What time does the trade deadline end? 2 pm cst?
August 1, 2023 at 11:11 am #2300895pm I think
August 1, 2023 at 11:20 am #230090Do some folks really enjoy the trade deadline?
Yes I absolutely love it. Deadline Day and the Winter Meetings are the few times each year when you get to see front offices in action and shape the future of their teams, for either good or bad. I enjoy that aspect of baseball because I am one of those folks, probably in the minority, who feel that front offices have more impact on a team than the field staff do.
Putting up with some national media attention seekers is a small price to pay for me. The local media usually don’t know what is going on anyway. Present company excluded Brian.
August 1, 2023 at 11:46 am #230091I hope not Carlson. I still say he’s much more JD Drew than Colby Rasmus and it took Drew time. I say Flaherty and DeJong are gone. Hopefully O’Neill. I think there’s a good chance of Baker and a catcher being moved, and I’m 50/50 on if Edman could be.
