And it’s why they are in last place.

ParticipantJust my humble opinion, gscottar.
August 1, 2023 at 2:39 pm #230157667, I think your idea of going after Barlow is an excellent idea but I think the Cards have soured on Carlson. He may be a change of scenery candidate.
August 1, 2023 at 3:02 pm #230160Mo’s schpiel about retooling not rebuilding seems to be holding up. He’s not trading the good stuff to contenders for the mother load of controllable pitching. But that is now. He may change his mind by the end of the season. Some how, some way, he needs to put together a rotation. There is plenty of time for the worm to turn.

August 1, 2023 at 4:12 pm #230173Do we think we are keeping Flaherty and rolling the dice on him?
If we don’t trade him I don’t think he stays in StL next season anyway….
August 1, 2023 at 4:13 pm #230174Mo is playing poker. Last year he got Montgomery by waiting. We’ll see if he gets a similar outcome in the next…47 minutes. My bet is that Flaherty is traded.
August 1, 2023 at 4:19 pm #230177That would be a head scratcher if we don’t trade Flaherty. Surely the return would be better than the extra draft pick.
August 1, 2023 at 4:23 pm #230178Nobody is going to trade a controllable ML starter for 2 months of a ML starter if anybody is hoping for that.
August 1, 2023 at 4:27 pm #230181No but we should be able to get someone that might be ready to contribute by 2025. If you wait until next year to select a comp pick they wouldn’t be ready until 2026 or 2027. And that is assuming the Cardinals made the QO offer and he rejected it. It they didn’t make the QO then they are giving him up for nothing. If he accepts it then you got him on the books for $20M next year.
August 1, 2023 at 4:28 pm #230182But Flaherty and Edman together could very likely get you Pepiot, Ryan, Bruns, and Mann. Which is a MLB ready SP coming back from injury, a AAA SP, a A+ SP that has excellent stuff and struggled with command, and a 26 year old AAA utility guy that could replace Edman or Motter on the roster.
Maybe that’s too much, but I think it’d be close.

Sweet baby Jesus. If this is what’s used for the rotation they’d be lucky to win 65 games and have a good shot to lose 100 plus. May as well tank as it wouldn’t be any worse if you tried to lose.
August 1, 2023 at 4:35 pm #230184Two former Birds…
Tommy Pham poked his head into the manager’s office and left the clubhouse in street clothes. No word yet that he’s been traded, but the signs point that way.

August 1, 2023 at 4:37 pm #230185Yeah the same laundry list all over again would mean deja vu all over again next year
August 1, 2023 at 4:44 pm #230189Doesn’t matter who our pitchers will be until we get a pitching coach who has experience as a pitching coach!

GraceffoIf we go ahead and assume Mikolas and Matz are in the SR next season – and count on having 1 of the other 6 on the opening day roster, then Mo only needs to grab 2 starters in free agency to have the initial 5 man rotation.
1 of the other 5 could be in pen as long relief / spot starter and the others plying their trade im Memphis.
That would be enough arms BUT that’s just quantity not quality…… We need some quality around here as in a #1 and a #3.
We also need a couple of quality relievers to restock the pen – assuming Helsley will be back and assume his role as the Closer… Really need to add the 7th and 8th inning guys.
August 1, 2023 at 4:48 pm #230194Mo has about 12 minutes to get a deal done for Flaherty or he’ll be around…
August 1, 2023 at 4:49 pm #230195bccran
ParticipantTongue in cheek, Texas. But I wouldn’t rule out McGreevy and/or Graceffo getting some starts sometime during the 2024 season.

ParticipantCards have probably been going back and forth with Flaherty’s agent, seeing if they’re close enough on a deal not to trade him.

August 1, 2023 at 4:54 pm #230203Well they better hurry, lol
August 1, 2023 at 4:55 pm #230204O’s have some good young talent. This sounds like a potentially good deal.
