I’m still laughing at the thought of Tommy Pham back in a Cardinal uniform.
July 29, 2024 at 3:27 pm #262080If Pham is used primarily as a starter against LH pitching he will help down the stretch.
Fedde will slot in as our number 2 starter.
July 29, 2024 at 3:27 pm #262081Pham is not the same guy that was here before. He is older, more mature, and not as skilled. But he can still play a role and be a mentor to the younger guys. He really helped in that way with the D-Backs last year.
I think this was a great deal, assuming it is done and nothing else is added. Seems like we got a starter who is as good or better in 2024 than anyone currently on the roster, and did not give up anything from the 2024 team.
Granted we gave up opportunity cost – that being what Edman would have provided had he come back from the injury. But it looks like a real good deal at this point.
July 29, 2024 at 3:30 pm #262083Cards also send Oliver Gonzalez to Dodgers in the trade. He’s a RHP in the DSL. 17 year old. Did ok in like 21 innings this season.
July 29, 2024 at 3:33 pm #262085So, the Cardinals give up a 17 year-old in the trade?
Still very lopsided trade in favor of the Cardinals.
July 29, 2024 at 3:35 pm #262086Oliver Don Drysdale Gonzalez?
July 29, 2024 at 3:37 pm #262087The Cardinals are also getting a PTBNL and cash.
The Cardinals will also receive a player to be named later from the Dodgers and cash considerations from the White Sox.
To make room on the 40-player roster, C Nick Raposo has been designated for assignment.

ParticipantCiF: My aging memory may have failed me, but wasn’t Tommy Pham something of a disgruntled pain in the neck with an attitude problem when he was here the first time? Or perhaps I’m thinking of somebody else.
Nope…. it was Pham alright…. he thought he was mistreated by the organization and was making trouble. I couldn’t wait to get him out of town last time around. Probably will be the case this time also. Tommy Pham?? really? Mozeliak has lost his memory and most of his marbles.
Losing Edman is like a gut punch. I’ll be looking for a new favorite I guess.
July 29, 2024 at 3:41 pm #262089Well, Pham has bounced around some of the worst teams in baseball since that time. Maybe his perspective has changed…

ParticipantGood trade. Fedde is a decent pitcher. To me pham is just taking up space buy thats ok. I feel bad for edman. But sometimes this happens.

ParticipantAny other homecomings? Flaherty?
July 29, 2024 at 3:44 pm #262092Pham will only be here for two months. I doubt he will be stirring up too much trouble. Hopefully he can get some big hits for us down the stretch.

ParticipantIt’s nice they got Pham too. I never believed those rumors about him anyway.

ParticipantI feel bad for edman. But sometimes this happens.
You can watch him in the World Series.
July 29, 2024 at 3:51 pm #262096Thomas Hyunsu Edman will be missed. Especially by GameCard. Let us hope this doesn’t mean that GameCard won’t be posting any longer? The Dodgers are going to very much like a healthy Tommy Edman. Kind of “Fed” up, as it seems like we often get snake-bit in trades. This Oliver Gonzalez kid just may end up being the second coming of Pedro Martinez.
**Great call by Scotty on this transaction!
July 29, 2024 at 3:58 pm #262098Haha…Yeah, anyone that feels bad for Tommy Edman weeps for the man that wins the Irish Lottery!
July 29, 2024 at 4:35 pm #262106On paper, this is a good trade. We will just have to see how it plays out. But for today Mozeliak did well.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI see Mo went the Bader for Monty route, and he used the Bank of LA. With Libby struggling, Pallante could strengthen our middle relief.

ParticipantI dont feel bad that he went to the dodgers. My guess is that edman liked being a cardinal though who knows. I know its a business. But if i was a baseball player i would rather play for a team i wanted to be on even if that team wasnt always winning vs being traded to a great team that has a great chance to make post season. But thats just me.
July 29, 2024 at 4:44 pm #262111Some mechanics of the trade, per John Mozeliak: He said the #STLCards and #WhiteSox agreed right away on a Tommy Edman-for-Erick Fedde deal.
However, the Cards wanted Tommy Pham. And the #Dodgers wanted Edman. Incorporating the third team and prospects took additional time.

July 29, 2024 at 4:47 pm #262113I’m entirely certain he enjoyed his time as a Redbird, Willie, and he now has the distinction of playing for the two foremost elite teams of the NL. He’s also afforded more than a decent chance of featuring his talents in the ultimate baseball competition of a WS. I’d guess that Arenado and Goldschmidt are both envious of little Eddie…Haha!
July 29, 2024 at 4:52 pm #2621141TD, wins and losses are a poor way to judge effectiveness. Here are the number of runs that the other team scored while Mikolas was in the game in his losses over 2019, 2021 and 2022:
1 run – 4 games with a loss
2 runs – 6 games with a loss
3 runs – 8 games with a loss
4 runs – 3 games with a loss
5+ runs – 10 games with a lossUnless he is supposed to pitch like 1968 Bob Gibson every year, he was above average in 2018-2022. He has been below average in 2023 and 2024.
I don’t want the Cardinals to keep Fedde for the next 5 years. I hope he provides 1 1/2 years of really good starting pitching and then the Cardinals have prospects ready to take the baton.

ParticipantMaybe 1tough but like i said some players would rather play with their chosen team particularly the team that drafted them vs going elsewhere. Dont know how edman feels, im sure hes prob ok with it. Almost all players get traded at some point.
July 29, 2024 at 4:58 pm #262117I agree, Forsch. I always go by simple ERA. Mikolas has hung a 3.94 on the board in a Cardinal uniform. That’s entirely respectable, but nothing at all special.
July 29, 2024 at 5:00 pm #2621181982 willie
ParticipantIts still a middling deal in my opinion. I dont condiderbot as good a deal as the montgomery deal. I doubt fedde is that good otherwise he wpuld have gotten more money during the offseason
