“Fedde has been good. But if he pushes Pallante out, then it might not be as big of a gain as we’d like.”
Exactly. Who does Fedde dislodge from the rotation? Pallante has been solid this year, with a sub-4 ERA. And he’s been very good of late, averaging 6 innings per start over his last 5 games, with a tidy 3.30 ERA.
The club’s worst starter has been Mikolas (4.99 ERA) and there’s no way he’ll be removed as long as he’s healthy and making 20 million bucks.
So how does Fedde help much? I’d say he doesn’t — unless the team goes with a strict 6-man rotation. Which might be precisely the objective.
Cardinal starters on normal rest this year: .799 OPS allowed
Redbird rotation with 5 days rest this year: .710 allowedJuly 29, 2024 at 2:00 pm #262053It sounds like we didn’t give up any prospects. I can’t complain then. I don’t love taking Pham, but getting Fedde for this year and next should be a good win. Edman was expendable due to his injury and contract and Siani. I still think Edman would be an improvement in total value in CF over Siani. But Siani is far cheaper.
July 29, 2024 at 2:04 pm #262054Bob – I think the goal is that if you make the playoffs, who do you want as your #2 & 3 starters?
Mikolas? No
Gibson? Maybe a #3
Lynn? Love the mentality, but do you really pencil him in as a #2?July 29, 2024 at 2:11 pm #262055I ran this trade through BTV and it just doesn’t add up.
Cardinals: receive 20.1 value and lose 2.6 value.
Dodgers: receive 1.9 value and lose 11.4 value
White Sox: receive 11.4 value and lose 19.4 valueThe Cardinals must be sending a chunk of money or pospects somewhere that hasn’t been reported yet.
July 29, 2024 at 2:11 pm #262056My aging memory may have failed me, but wasn’t Tommy Pham something of a disgruntled pain in the neck with an attitude problem when he was here the first time? Or perhaps I’m thinking of somebody else.
July 29, 2024 at 2:14 pm #262057Correct CIF. He didn’t leave on the best of terms. I guess all is forgotten if he can hit LH pitching.
July 29, 2024 at 2:15 pm #262058Gscottar- I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. BTV is completely irrelevant. They have no idea what these teams value. They are just one point of view. Not in any regard the point of view that matters.
July 29, 2024 at 2:15 pm #262059My aging memory may be failing me, but wasn’t Tommy Pham something of a disgruntled, unsatisfied sort with an attitude problem when he was in St. Louis?
July 29, 2024 at 2:16 pm #262060I’d think Pallante to Memphis to be the 6th starter. We get depth. If there are any more doubleheaders, better Pallante as the callup. I see Lynn as the 5th best starter right now rather than Mikolas. But hard to see either of those sitting.
Carlson to AAA to get some regular plate appearances, please?
The first stats I saw on Pham’s defense in CF this year are not good. Anyone know more? In principle he can platoon with Siani or come in to PH for him late in a game when Siani faces a lefty.
All of this for just Edman if reports are right? A source calculating value shows it as a plus $17 million deal for the Cards. Really amazing if they managed that.
July 29, 2024 at 2:17 pm #262061Jnevel- you are probably right. I don’t treat BTV as gospel but they are generally good enough to be in the ballpark. This trade is not even close to being in the ballpark. It feels like there is more information we aren’t getting yet.
July 29, 2024 at 2:19 pm #2620621TD, you have to look at 2024 from Fedde to see why the Cardinals made the deal. He had 7 wins for the White Sox which was over 25% of the team total. He was 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA. He went to the KBO in 2023 and worked on his pitch mix. He was the 2023 KBO MVP. Also, he was a first round draft pick of the Nationals in the 2014 draft.
July 29, 2024 at 2:21 pm #262063Gags – I think Pham plays LF and Donovan plays 2B when a lefty starts. That makes sure Gorman doesn’t hit.
Pham is not a good CF option. But he can play there. I feel the same about Nootbaar. My guess is Siani still starts against lefties if Carlson is optioned.
July 29, 2024 at 2:23 pm #262064Yeah, BTV is just a tool to keep people making from irrational proposals. There are many times it is way off base.
But in this deal, the money lined up, the needs of the Cardinals and Dodgers were met, and the White Sox continue their rebuild while lowering payroll.
Still, it seems odd the Cardinals are getting two players back who will immediately contribute and only (we think) gave up one player that hasn’t contributed anything this year.
July 29, 2024 at 2:24 pm #262065I think Edman has a lot more value than BTV is crediting him with. But, the injury does make it more cloudy. That said, he has a lot longer trend of being good than Fedde so the Cardinals still could lose this deal. But overall, I like it. I don’t really understand Pham but whatever. He probably is a very slight improvement.
July 29, 2024 at 2:34 pm #262066I love the reunion with Pham. He’s not hit for much power but the salaries of both he a Fedde offset the Edman money. Nice bat to plug in vs. LHP and off the bench.
I don’t know where we sit with the 40 man and we have some questions moving forward with a sudden surplus of veteran starters with Matz I believe possibly returning at some point. Also we have to send someone down or release or trade someone to get it back to 26 players if my math is correct. We didn’t DFA GG and not being someone up. Leahy was the call. We may not be done dealing either.
July 29, 2024 at 2:35 pm #262067July 29, 2024 at 2:38 pm #262068If all the Cardinals gave up was Edman, I love this deal. Sure, I will miss Edman’s versatility but he is not Mookie Betts 2.0. The Cardinals now have Gray, Fedde, Gibson, Lynn and Mikolas for their rotation. They can keep Pallante up for a 6 man rotation or keep him stretched out in Memphis. If the Cardinals could get rid of Mikolas and his salary, I would be ecstatic. (Not happening)
Obviously, Pham is only here until the end of the year.
July 29, 2024 at 2:38 pm #262069Still, it seems odd the Cardinals are getting two players back who will immediately contribute and only (we think) gave up one player that hasn’t contributed anything this year.
Could be the PTBNL going somewhere. We had a clause in the Bader deal that he had to meet certain amount of playing time or we had to give someone up to the Yankees.
July 29, 2024 at 2:40 pm #262070Yeah, I saw that right away, Forsch. It’s not at all unlike the manner in which the Cardinals looked at the ’21 season placed on the board from Steven Matz. In any event, my perception of Fedde is exactly what he is, which is a way below average .431 SP’er with a career ERA of 4.92 who spent an entire season in Korea simply because no Big League team wanted him. Heck, he wasn’t even good enough to find work in Japan…
July 29, 2024 at 2:40 pm #262071858 – we have one extra on the 26-man roster and we have one extra on the 40-man.
We also will get O’Brien back soon who will have to be added back to the 40-man. Matz is in the same boat but he’s not likely back for a few weeks or more.
Raposo and Bosiokovic are likely to be DFA’d. But we could still see more trades.
July 29, 2024 at 2:51 pm #2620731TD, the Cardinals got 4 good years out of Mikolas after he went overseas to learn how to pitch to major league hitters. Why can’t Fedde do the same? He has been fairly consistent all season. In 9 of his 21 starts this year he has allowed 1 run or less.
July 29, 2024 at 3:00 pm #262074I’ll concede one good season from Mikolas. With the exception of 18, he’s 40-55 in a Redbird uniform for a W/L pct. of .421 and has been nothing more than a below average SP’er who eats innings. He’s Jake Westbrook lite…
July 29, 2024 at 3:03 pm #262075Go Dodgers
July 29, 2024 at 3:09 pm #262076Fedde could help and Pham will be gone after this year than goodness. Plus, Edman is gone…I never thought he was that good. Good trade.
July 29, 2024 at 3:11 pm #262077It’ll be fun to see Eddie display his skills with a first rate team in the post-season, GameCard.
