We have a lot of experience with pitchers we’re excited about looking less exciting in AAA. I want to see if he’s better than what we’ve got. If he is, that will be great, but I also think the BJs FO knows what they are doing.

stlcard25ParticipantMaybe I’m just going through an overly pessimistic phase, but I’m starting to agree more with bling on the prospects and the direction of the team. Robberse has a little promise, but also has some red flags and we’ve seen plenty of this type not end up helping the big league team. Hopefully he finds a way to contribute in St Louis over the next couple of years, and there will very likely be work if he’s willing to put in the effort and achieve the results needed.
December 28, 2023 at 2:13 pm #240436At no. 13 in The Cardinal Nation’s 2024 prospect countdown is the #STLCards' first-round draft pick in 2023. CF Chase Davis has the eye, the athleticism, and the potential for big power, but needs to sharpen his hit tool. ($) https://t.co/GU9ktCrfUj pic.twitter.com/PQdf0vjoBq

December 28, 2023 at 2:16 pm #240437I think it is also fair without criticizing anyone to remind folks that Robberse + Kloffenstein were the return for two months of Jordan Hicks’ services. Not two years, two months.
December 28, 2023 at 2:59 pm #240438Yes, two months. And as I said, the BJs FO knows what they are doing. They probably didn’t trade the next Zac Galen.
I’m interested to see how those guys do in AAA compared to McGreevy, Graceffo.
December 28, 2023 at 7:05 pm #240444So far, our rankings favor the two returnees over the two newcomers, but there could be some familiarity bias. On the other hand, newcomer Roby is very competitive with incumbent Hence as the top pitching prospect in the system.
December 29, 2023 at 6:09 am #240452The Cardinal Nation’s 2024 #STLCards prospect countdown reaches no. 12 with a 20-year-old Korean outfielder who has a high ceiling but needs more development after a solid 2023 with Palm Beach. ($) https://t.co/K7Mu7iu6vp pic.twitter.com/0siT8RAGNX

Yes, they are exciting prospects. With them, it’s going to be about who can stay off the IL.

The community has it like that, with Herpe below the returning guys and ahead of the new guys.
December 30, 2023 at 8:34 am #240502At no. 11 in The Cardinal Nation’s #STLCards 2024 prospect countdown is @jimmy_crooks22, a High-A catcher whose offense caught up with his defense in a strong first full season as a professional. Check out @bt_newberry's scouting report. ($) https://t.co/pLq01Jiqjk pic.twitter.com/V4y1xhWliB

December 30, 2023 at 5:37 pm #240536Yep, TCN has them in the same order as the Community. Bernal, Crooks, Pages. An old retired baseball guy I knew when I was young used to say the thing about catchers is, the farther away they are, the better they look. It was true then and its true now.
December 30, 2023 at 7:28 pm #240538Although I just now became aware that he even existed in the Redbird system, I really like this Jimmy Crooks guy. I’d say he has a very good chance to cement his place in Cardinal lore right beside Tommy Lawless…
December 30, 2023 at 8:19 pm #240544I would caution against getting googly eyes over a catcher in A ball, but it wouldn’t do any good.
December 30, 2023 at 9:42 pm #240546I’ll wait’ll I see his bat flip before passing final judgement.
December 31, 2023 at 7:46 am #240554In a FREE article, The Cardinal Nation’s #stlcards prospect countdown for 2024 reaches no. 10 with the org’s Pitcher of the Year. In just his second full season, Max Rajcic should soon be testing his exceptional control and five pitches in Double-A. https://t.co/lTGNQM0y2l pic.twitter.com/Gkwugg5mih

December 31, 2023 at 11:33 am #240566Skipping back a few slots, how concerned should we be about Chase Davis? First off, there is the fact that he was drafted at all, when the narratve of the day has the draft focus turned toward pitching. And the importance of a hit with our only pick before the 3rd round.
And then there is his performance at the plate. It stunk. A slightly deeper look showed the he didn’t hit lefties even more than he didn’t hit righties, by a considerable margin. And his by the month splits shows he got worse as his season progressed rather than better. So in summary, Yikes!
This is a college hitter from a decent baseball program drafted in the first round who was manhandled by low A pitching over 131 PAs. It seems very concerning to me.
December 31, 2023 at 5:13 pm #240598MLB Pipeline has Davis the number three prospect in the system after only Winn and Hence. So they surely are not concerned. 😉
My personal ranking has him no. 16.
December 31, 2023 at 5:41 pm #240602Or, they are concerned about everyone else even more. 🙁
January 1, 2024 at 9:44 am #240617At no. 9 in The Cardinal Nation’s #stlcards 2024 prospect countdown is a well-rounded teenage catcher. Switch-hitting Leonardo Bernal seems ready for the challenges of High-A. ($) https://t.co/W78fuT2WWF pic.twitter.com/lCRo7n5dqn

ParticipantIf the Cards draft someone like Davis this year with the 7th selection….. big mistake. We’ll see what happens… so we just have to keep our fingers crossed that our Draft Dept doesn’t add another stinker to their list. I’m not totally down on Davis but a bit concerned so far.
January 1, 2024 at 1:25 pm #240631They used to tell the young hitters coming into pro ball the difference is now you face somebody’s Friday night starter every day. I’d be afraid to find out what they tell them now.
My guess is Davis didn’t do well against the Friday night types but was adept at feasting on the rotation filler guys who are selling insurance now. A college hitter can put up big numbers like that. Big glorious numbers that have the computer lit like a christmas tree.
January 1, 2024 at 2:11 pm #240635Assuming numbers are how players are drafted is not real, ignoring the important role amateur scouts play. But when you distrust numbers, it is the cause of all ills. Gotta have something to blame…
January 1, 2024 at 3:17 pm #240636Whether it is an MLB season or a pro debut, if results are bad, then yes, something is to blame. You dismis my idea, as if it could not possibly be correct, but do not offer anything else.
January 1, 2024 at 4:05 pm #240637The player had a rough first partial season. Though there are many possible theories and combinations of them, no one knows why. That includes both me and you.
What I dismissed is the apparent lack of understanding of what goes into how players are drafted. That is not specific to any individual.
January 1, 2024 at 4:35 pm #240639I’m not too worried about Chase Davis. 135 plate appearances isn’t much to go on. In that small sample he ran a really good OBP but didn’t hit for much power and had a fairly low batting average. Is any of that a good predictor of future performance? Probably not. And does any of that indicate that the computers picked him and that the computers are always wrong? Almost certainly not.
