6:05 p.m. RHP Miles Mikolas (0-1, 9.00) vs. RHP Jameson Taillon (0-1, 6.00) FS Midwest // KMOX
April 1, 2019 at 5:18 pm #85470What does this team need to do to keep from striking out so much? It looks to me like a repeat of recent years. Everybody swings like a maniac with two strikes, trying to hit one over the moon.
Why oh why cant they just choke up, shorten the swing, and just try and make contact? Geez, just poke at the ball if you have to in certain situations to keep from striking out. 17 Ks in the Monday game, so that’s what, over 60 in four games?????
We are missing a great game……

stlcard25ParticipantWhile I have generally been taking the approach that Ks don’t matter near so much in the “new school” offensive game, it is embarrassing to have this team strike out so much more than anyone else. Hopefully Albert can work some magic soon.
April 2, 2019 at 8:20 am #85506I am new to TCN and was left homeless when the MLB boards went kaput to non-social media participants. Strikeouts – nothing more frustrating than watching that little strike box and see some of the center cut offerings ignored and nasty sliders swung at with impunity. Seems that about 80 percent of sliders wind up out of the box and that pitch recognition would be a way to avoid a strikeout. But these guys are professionals and my being an old couch potato is not going to help them. Just hope for the best and recognize this as a great game to watch. So happy to have 2019 season underway and hope to share some good posts here on TCN.

stlcard25ParticipantWelcome aboard, Minuteman!! Hopefully you will enjoy your time here…it’s a great mix of knowledge and fun here. Nowhere better to get your Cards fix, IMO.
April 2, 2019 at 8:56 am #85513Since Bader and Fowler have had a rest day it may be time to give the same to Ozuna who appears to be totally lost at the plate and dragging an anchor in the outfield. It is very early yet but from what we have seen I don’t forsee Mr O being offered an extension by Mr Mo.
April 2, 2019 at 8:57 am #85514With these days off, I think Wainright should be sent be sent to the pen instead of Hudson.
April 2, 2019 at 8:59 am #85515It’s very early, but the only thing offered to Ozuna is a Qualifying offer.
April 2, 2019 at 9:01 am #85516I also like Baders new approach of trying to bunt his way on. He can bunt a slider.
April 2, 2019 at 9:16 am #85517Ref sending Waino to the pen instead of Hudson. I agree but the timing is not right to do that now. I honestly think Waino will be in the pen later in the season along with Carlos Martinez. The real question is whom will they replace? It would be a mistake to once again send Brebbia down. He has the talent to be a pen star along with Gant. But Gant may get Waino’s starting position as the season goes on.

They may not even do that out of fear he might accept it.
April 2, 2019 at 2:16 pm #85575One thing to keep in mind is that Waino was hitting the edges. He was not getting any calls. He needs to get the edge calls and get the opponents to swing at pitches out of the zone.
I have no problem skipping Hudson for a start. He needs his innings limited anyway.
April 2, 2019 at 4:02 pm #85577They may not even do that out of fear he might accept it.
Bingo
April 2, 2019 at 4:04 pm #85578And darnit, I just realized we have no game today (4/2). Seems like odd scheduling.
April 2, 2019 at 4:05 pm #85579It is by design. MLB tries to schedule a free day immediately after every team’s home opener in case it needs to be rescheduled. This also is why the Cards will be off Friday. The weather could prove it to be a good idea.
April 2, 2019 at 4:37 pm #85583Thanks for the response, Brian. I thought there was a reason related to the start of the season since you see with several teams, but still not sure what the big advantage is. In other words, if there was no day off after the home opener, the second game just becomes the home opener. Maybe it has something to do with being fair to people who splurged and planned for the splendor of the home opener since they might not even be able to get tickets for game 2 if it’s also a sellout. Even so, all that would go out the window if there was rain on both days.
April 2, 2019 at 4:43 pm #85584Yes, prices for the home opener are different. Everything about the opener is different, including the starting times and associated events. For example, the Cards have brought in every living Hall of Famer for Thursday and hopefully can keep them around for Friday if needed.
It is certainly possible, but I do not recall the last time a team had two consecutive games rained out.
This opening day system, while it seems to bother some fans, makes sense to me. Otherwise, if I had tickets to Thursday and it gets rained out, I would be pretty pissed that the Friday Game 2 people would have stumbled into opening day and all I get is a refund.
April 2, 2019 at 6:39 pm #85588All true Brian but notice that those teams with a dome did not have the off day scheduled after home opener day (Milwaukee, Miami, Tampa, etc). But I sure don’t like scheduling the Cards to play a night game tomorrow and then a day home opener the next day. Extra innings or travel problems could really mess things up.
April 2, 2019 at 8:04 pm #85593Agreed, Minuteman. A night game on travel day followed by a day game the next day is unfair to the players and should be avoided by the schedulers.
Of course, domed teams do not need a rainout plan contingency.

stlcard25ParticipantSo will Mikolas get back on track today? It would be great to see him go 7 with a run or two at most and get us back to .500.
April 3, 2019 at 8:24 am #85617Maybe it is the curse of the long term extension.
Mikolas signs an extension and his first game out is less than stellar after a very less than stellar spring.
Kyle Hendricks signs an extension and his first game out the Cubs get thrashed 8-0.
Luis Severino signs an extension and immediately goes on the IL.
Chris Sale sign an extension and his first game out his fastball tops out at 89 MPH, which has to be concerning.
April 3, 2019 at 8:26 am #85619My hope is to get Miller back on track. So far from the start of spring training to his last appearance he has looked to be the weak spot in the bullpen. Since he is the only lefty it looks like we will be depending on our righties to get the job done and, for the most part, they have been doing just that. Sure hope that Miller is not a miss.
April 3, 2019 at 8:30 am #85621Miller is indeed becoming a concern. As I mentioned the other day if he turns out to be another Cecil Mo may never sign another FA the rest of his life. At least not another FA reliever.

ParticipantWe have been plagued with the relief pitching signings that the FO always consider to be great upgrades. Cecil and Gregerson are still albatrosses. If I was Mozeliak I wouldn’t even show my face at the games. Don’t give up on Miller just yet… even a broken watch shows the correct time twice a day.

ParticipantHey Minuteman I can remember umpteen times I read your comments on MBL. You’ve come to the right place knowing that you are a true die-hard. Signup and get the real thing here… with good informative pieces and some very provocative and sound back and forth right here on these postings. You’ll never be the same.
Don’t forget to check out our X-Factor ’19 topic. It was very popular on MLB.
