Day 2 and my feet are already sore, but it is definitely a job I love. Thanks for the kind words and for financial support. Already working on today’s report to go up tonight, probably after St. Louis’ game.
Damn…. envy is not the word. I’ll go with covet. You know I’d spend a lot of time at the back fields. Yeah, my feet getting sore would be a problem. I had to stop my assignments for LPGA walking scorer because of the same thing. 10 years ago I was doing 2 rounds/day. No problema. Now I can only close my eyes, and reminisce. Keep on truckin’ and keep those reports coming. You are our eyes and ears down there.
Maybe in my next life.

I know that this is spring training but there has to be some way to see how the team is doing compared to other teams. This is from the Post-Dispatch for the offensive numbers by the Cards so far.
26th in team average: .242
28th in on-base percentage: .317
29th in slugging percentage: .383
28th in OPS: 700
25th in runs scored: 69
One of the things I think you have to keep in mind about spring training is that MM doesn’t think its a time to work and get better. His first priority and his guiding principle is rest for his players. One of his very first actions at the beginning of spring training this year was to change the schedule to start the day’s activities an hour later. His stated reason for this was so that his players can get more rest. Rest is what Matheny brings as a manager. He wants to make sure his players don’t work too hard or they might not be able to perform as well as they otherwise could when the season starts. (This, BTW, is completely opposite to what LaRussa used to say. TLR couldn’t stress the importance of spring training enough.) Anyway, because of that, I think you have to discount spring training stats to some degree. His players don’t try as hard as they could since their first priority, as determined by Matheny, is rest. The downside to that is that it might take another month after the end of spring training for the players to hit their groove. Hopefully, we’re not too far behind at the beginning of May.
Would lights out 1 hour earlier work? Its not like they’re playing night games. My guess is that its up to the players to get enough REST.

i cant remember where the discussion on Wick vs Mayers was being had…but i have to say how happy i am to have been wrong on wanting Wick over Mayers….at least so far he has looked more than impressive…i guess that offseason work and play really helped him…it is still ST and Wick is still young but good going so far

From the “no use in crying over spilled milk” department…. there’s more talk about Lance Lynn being a Twin, and not a Cardinal, than there was for all the time he spent being a Cardinal. The FO jumped on Mikolas early on… Lynn was history at that point.
Let’s see how good Maddux’s eyes are. DGonalez and Woodford should have good seasons. I’ll be watching more closely now.

I never put that much emphasis into Spring Training numbers. Guys usually play parts of games, lots of substitutions and shuffling around, rarely face the same pitcher twice, etc. Just no way to get into a groove.
Still some guys have great Springs, but neither bad nor good Springs are to be taken as a definite predictor of the coming season.
