In the picture he looks overweight. I did not see his at bats today.

People don’t want to hear this but their group of young players strongly suggests they will be a better team next year. I understand, though, people want them to be better now. We’ll have to see about that one.

There were some very good questions asked of Hummel in yesterday’s chat at PD. Also many direct answers, including some related to Mikolas (he feels that Mikolas should be thought of as insurance), and Kelly, (of whom he thinks that Knizner’s progress along with the Molina situation will determine Carson’s fate… Carson won’t have the opportunity to win a spot on his own).

Interesting. Did he say what Mikolas is viewed as insurance for? Wainwright? Flaherty and Reyes? Is he not one of the starting five? On Kelly, nothing new there, but I guess it is good to see him saying the same thing a number of us have been saying for months now.

CC commented about this on some game thread, but I do not recall which one. Apparently the rule that at least four starters must be in the spring lineups does not take affect until the second week of games or maybe March 1. Not sure which, but it did not apply until today.

Cards send down seven NRIs to minors camp: Schafer, Poncedeleon, Woodford, Mendoza, Ortega, Jeremy Martinez and Schrock (rehabbing injury).

Sucks for Schrock as he never even got in a game.

Dichotomy in early #stlcards team stats. Offense good, pitching struggling

I think our pitching will struggle this year. Our offense was really not as bad as it seemed last year. We were sixth in the league in scoring. One thing that magnified our offensive woes to a degree was running into a lot of outs on the bases. If we are better in the fundamentals, that in itself will help a lot.

We could really struggle on the mound though. We are heavily dependent on young guys taking a step forward, which may work out, but may not. Plus our bullpen seems sort of chaotic. I think the loss of Lynn is going to bite us, as when you take that solid innings-eater out of your rotation it effects everyone else on the staff. Maybe we can get him back on a one-year deal, since the market is shying away from risky long-term deals to pitchers who are over 30.

for all the talk about the bullpen…i am pretty confident about the bullpen…we have lots of options

my worry is all about the rotation to me…until i see Mikolas have a good outing in ST i will feel uneasy as Waino will be a worry all year i think and JAck seems just not ready yet…IMO…he is close but not quite there

maybe once Reyes is ready to go i will feel better, as a combo of JAck and Reyes might be enough to make up for any concern to Waino and Mikolas overall

I’d still target Archer right now and get a deal done…

Not worried about an unhappy Pham. He seems like the typ3 that plays best with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.

I bet Pham must have “loved” that DeJong contract.

I like Pham not taking a lowball offer (in his eyes) which means he thinks he is worth more than whatever they were offering which means he wants to go out and show it

Pham has said in the past he didnt want a long term extension because he believes he can increase his worth in the next few years. People are just trying to create contraversy.

He is 30. He doesn’t have a lot of years to prove himself. He should think about why the Cards don’t want to lock him up. There is nothing he can do about it but he would be a fool to think his value will go up as he ages.

The new beat writer for The Athletic seems on the optimistic side.

Well according to Derrick Goold’s chat Matheny and company have expressed their concern about Mikolas.

Besides it only being Spring training, need to realize we have played 7 of our 12 games against teams that were in the playoffs last year.

Well, I could flip it around to say that if the Cards aspire to be a playoff team again themselves, these are the teams they need to beat. The same ones that generally whipped them last year. But in reality, it is only spring training, like you said.
