#Cardinals pitching assignments for Friday games:
Michael Wacha starts vs. Nationals (day)
Dakota Hudson starts vs. Astros (night)

Now O’Neill has a line of .238-.385-.857-1.242. Not sustainable unless he continues to slam home runs and cuts down on the K.
He is showing better plate discipline. 5 BB vs 7 K’s in 21 AB’s. Still too high .33% K rate. If he drops off when facing the better pitchers consistently then possibly back to Memphis, but they may need him if for nothing else a late inning defensive replacement and the power that is clearly there.
On the other hand if he continues to slam home runs and cuts the K’s what will the Cardinals do. He is vastly superior to both Martinez and Fowler on defense.
We are still too early to draw major conclusions from Spring Training, IMO. O’Neill seems like the type who will settle into above average Ks with slightly above average walks. If he hits 35 homers a year and plays plus defense, you can certainly live with that. I don’t expect him to be another Grichuk. Health may be his biggest concern.
Meisinger looked dominant in his one inning of work. A little clean up at Memphis and he should be given a close look when a bullpen spot opens up. I think that we overlooked him.
O’Neill hopefully will lead the league in homers one day. It’s funny that he still doesn’t have a single, with 4 homers and a double.
Was glad to see Layne pitch better after a hiccup. Unless Cecil pitches well I’d like to see Layne or Cervenka given a chance. And Webb looks very good as well, so far, and he has the big advantage, as he is on the 40 man roster.
Webb and Brebbia both have options so they are probably doomed for Memphis. It is a shame we can’t put our best players on the 25 man roster and just go win games.
Agree gscottar… the FO keeps saying that they are committed to winning games but they demand we put up with the dead weight that they signed by mistake and are blocking some younger and more productive players.

Seriously, it isn’t a stretch to say that who has options and who doesn’t can factor into who stays up and who is sent down. Of the two mentioned Brebbia might have a chance of staying up but Webb has little chance since Miller, Cecil, and Shreve can’t be sent down.

9. Joe Hudson (R) CA good lineup for an away game. Its better than the lineup for the home game. Hurst is getting quite a look this Spring as well as Ravelo.
Yes, I was surprised by this. I expected the combination of a road and evening game meant fewer starters would play tonight.
Hurst is a major beneficiary of the injury to Thomas. The latter may end up like O’Neill and Schrock last spring if he doesn’t play soon. Ravelo is fortunate that neither Carpenter nor Martinez are playing first this year. I am kind of surprised we haven’t seen more of Gyorko there this spring.
any word on the extra kids brought up that we haevnt seen, who might make it into these games as we are SS?
Dexter Fowler with a double today, unfortunately ruining the lovely slot machine symmetry of .125/.125/.125.
Wacha was pretty good I suppose. Two homers is bad, but both with two outs and the bases empty. Nice to see Wieters gun a baserunner. Miller better, since his poor command first game.
Hudson allowed just one hit in four scoreless innings. Carlson doubled in two and Carpenter homered.
Cervenka (aka Cervenky and Cervinsky) got into trouble in the fifth. Still, with two on and two out, he induced a grounder that went between the third baseman’s legs. The radio duo distinctly avoided mentioning the name of the third baseman who committed the two-run error. I had to check the box score to verify that Carpenter was still in the game.
4-2 Cards heading into the sixth.
Ponce-uh de Leon (or just de Leon) walked two in the ninth but escaped the jam to preserve the 6-3 win. The Cards are now back to .500 at 6-6-2 on the spring.
