Nope. He was 29th out of 33 qualified third basemen, according to Fangraphs. Nolan Gorman was one of the few that were worse. Thomas Saggese proved in the minors that he can’t play 3B. Prieto is not a good defender anywhere. So, that leave Fermin and Wetherholt who can possibly be better 3B for the Cardinals.
But if Arenado is bad for the Cardinals, why would he be good on a team trying to win?
I’d rather see us pay Arenado 14mil by this deadline, rather than dfa 13mil Soler by the deadline.
Arenado is making $19 million, Soler is making $16 million. That’s $3 million in savings. Then pay $13 million of Soler’s $16 million to trade him to a team like the Pirate or Royals who are looking for offense and willing to take a flyer because he is cheap. And by trade, I mean “cash considerations or a player to be named later.” Those two moves combined can save the Cardinals $6 million this year and $15 million in 2027.
Would you still rather pay Arenado?
Nado is due 35mil, Soler 16mil, a 2/19mil difference for Nado that the LAA must be willing to assume.
Then trading Solers 16mil in 26′, coming off a negative value season, should pay down much more than 3mil.
It would be asking a lot of both trade partners.

I get it that a lot of fans dream of a monster return (sugar plums) for Donovan. The Cardinals won’t be able to acquire this sort of equal value. He is worth more to this team than any of the other 29.
IMO, Donovan has been a once in a decade type player for this team…. a little rubbing off couldn’t hurt the young guys that are going to be the next generation of Cardinal baseball.Trading Arenado for another bad contract at a position we need is somewhat justifiable but attaching someone like Donovan to Arenado is not justifiable. That would be a dereliction of duty and at that point we could stop calling it a rebuild and just call it a salary purge. I can guarantee you that Bloom would rather have prospects coming back instead of salary relief.
Just saw an SI article titled “Realistic Trade Packages on Donovan trade packages”. It said Cijntje, Arroyo and Montes…. I’d do that in a heartbeat, doubtful from the Mariners side though unless the Cards sweetened it.
Harmony, Cards will need a 3B at some point, is Arroyo an option there or 2B or corner OFer likely? 50 arm, but is that a 2B 50 or a 3B 50…..
Enough clubs have called on Donny, that Blooms expected trade return is well known, and I hope that’s a very firm ask. A return he wouldn’t water down.
I know, but that would be one of the richest hauls for him that I’ve seen.
Two 55’s and a 50 all in the top 100 would easily put the Cards system as the consensus #1
Fangraphs recently put out their Mariners top 25 prospects and Arroyo’s arm was pretty much panned, from what I could see. He may even be a Knoblauch out there. Sounds like he’s a 2B or maybe LF guy but the bat should be good. Just not a lot of projected defensive value (a 30/40, which for a point of comparison, Jordan Walker was a 35/50).

Michael Arroyo’s future may not be in the infield … but the barely 21-year-old can hit.
FWIW Seattle top executive Jerry Dipoto has a history of getting little in return in trades of young pitching prospects who later blossom. Freddy Peralta, Pablo Lopez … even Zack Littell. The Mariners may be reluctant to part with Jurrangelo Cijntje, Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan.

Donny is plug and play for SEA, but I struggle to see Bloom accepting Cijntje and rookie ball power for Donny, even if its a perfectly equal value trade.
I question whether Montes is a trade target Bloom would accept this winter. I would expect STL to say no, and try to re-work around Lazaro.
I hope the ask is for four service years, one player, for Donovan. An outfield or rotation add that’s mlb ready. The industry has us trading for prospects. Arroyo seems redundent.
Winn, Herrera, Libby and Walker all have four control seasons. You won’t get Winn for Donovan, but a Herrera / Libby type helps build that service class. The outfield depth needs additional airframes for those runways!
I hope.Montes is a guy I don’t really have any desire at all to acquire. Even if he somehow were to work out, I would still feel that way. Adam Dunn is the absolute best case scenario there, with a 75% or more chance of getting no value. I don’t see it.
Steve Adams is wrong, as Donovan is too valuable to give up for two low floor guys like Cijntje and Montes.
If Bloom adds a starting outfielder, and we do start Walker remember, Jordan’s runway only gets crowded from when Noot returns until he’s dealt. Church to the shuttle once Noot returns, or Walker.

I am so sick of seeing articles predicting what team Donovan will be traded to. I think I’ve seen just about all of the 29 MLB teams. Just this week I saw stories regarding a trade to three NHL teams (he probably doesn’t own skates) and one NFL team. I expect to see some projecting a Donovan trade to a professional pickleball team and a story about Donovan joining the PGA tour.
Mustn’t trade Donovan.

I’m sure most teams have plan A, Plan B and Plan C and will pivot quickly.
I don’t know much about him, he might be a very nice guy, but Bregman is a pain in the rear side of the top of my legs!
Who would be a good enough get to trade straight up for Donovan? One for one. Has to be prospect or at least younger with more years of control. Has to be realistic from trading partner’s side.
