He may not be a kid…but when the signing of him was in no specific role…depending on him for a role is not the best feeling…similar to when we signed Mikolas if i remember…though even if Mikolas was given a spot to beging with…he was an unknown because of his move from Asia…similar to Kim
Now Mikolas turned out great for a year…maybe Kim does too… I am all for it…but im not going to act like this is no a BIG blow to the rotation…it is…no matter how many guys we can throw at the solution
I think Kim is going to be a surprise in the rotation. He’s been very good.
Also, there’s plenty of depth. The key guy, Cmart, is the difference between a very good rotation and simply an average one. Flaherty-Cmart-Hudson-Waino-Kim with supplements from Ponce, Gomber, Woodford, etc is fine. If Mikolas can pitch, then even better.
What exactly are Kim’s major league stats that make him very good?
Of course he doesn’t have major league stats so you’ll call him a slug, but he’s been very good in his time overseas.

27, I challenge you to find any credible source saying the FO has Ralston pegged as a reliever.I am in favor of Ralston being tried as a starter. According to referenced Kyle Glaser chat from BA. Also, I thought Brian mentioned that once or twice. Ralston, like a number of 2019 draftee pitchers, is an exciting prospect.

A combined 5.32 ERA, 1.432 WHIP?Lets do this. Tell us how Mikolas major league stats got him originally signed w/stl? Lets just ignore that both Mikolas and Kim both excelled vs their peers oversees.
imagine what the rotation could have been at this time less a couple trades?

No sir, I did not. In Ralston’s no. 28 prospect capsule, I wrote that I expect to see him in the Peoria rotation. If he can develop an effective third pitch and with continued good results, he could keep starting, I would think. I guess BA believes his development is not going to broaden. My take is that what happens in several years is TBD.
FWIW, I believe your Glaser reference did answer the challenge, though. 😉
Simba, you might have missed the best one of the bunch?…. Zac Gallen had a 2.81 ERA and 96 K’s in 80 IP last year.

Well said, ChiTown. Also, how about Luke Weaver and his 2.94 ERA for Arizona in a dozen starts, with 9.7 K’s per 9 innings and a terrific 5-1 K/BB ratio?
The StL farm system really has been a pitching factory during the Mozeliak era. Funny thing is, the “signature” guy, the guy who represented at least a bit of a departure from tradition, Shelby Miller, has turned out to be far less than hoped. Thus the Heyward trade looks better with each passing year.
Bob Reed, also considering what Atlanta got in return for Miller, they won that thread of trades to say the least.
I’m still confused on the Gallen trade from Miami to AZ. Why Miami traded a potential stud, young SP who was already putting up great numbers for Chisholm is still a bit confusing? I understand the value of a star position player over a SP, but Chisholm is far from a sure thing.
Kaminsky was signed over the offseason, I have a buddy who was ecstatic about that. I’m sure he wouldn’t be in the starting rotation conversation, but if Kim and CMart are in the rotation, is anyone holding out hope he could end up as a lefty in the pen? I haven’t seen him name mentioned anywhere is why I am asking this.

Agreed, ChiTown. That deal was weird on the face of it.
All I can figure is, maybe Miami was looking FAR into the future, thinking they won’t compete for another 3 or 4 years at least, and that Chisolm would at that point be entering his early prime, while Gallen would be an arbitration-pay piece of trade bait.Or Derek Jeter & Co. looked at Gallen and saw a not particularly imposing specimen of a hurler, a guy without a dominant fastball, and just underestimated his value — not unlike the Cards did when they made him the throw-in for Marcell Ozuna. (Hey, on the bright side at least Mags Sierra didn’t become Willie McGee.) If the Cards can get it wrong when evaluating a twirler, anyone can. Heck, the indisputably brilliant & efficient Dodger front office gave Joe Kelly a ton of dough based on fewer than a dozen innings in October, right?
I saw the Kaminsky signing as one to add depth at a Memphis and/or another lefty to compete for a bull pen role. I would assume that Kim will win a rotation spot and Gomber goes to Memphis if he does not win a starter role. The Cardinals would then have the following lefties competing for bull pen spots: Miller, Webb, Cabrera, Kaminsky and Sanchez.
I was impressed with the job Cabrera did in the playoffs out of the pen.
well apparently mikolas is going to miss the start of the season. still haven’t seen exactly what the issue is. injury bug coming early this year.

It would be thoughtful of you not to decide how I might label someone. I guess the fact that most of the players they acquire are mediocre to bad has tainted my outlook. Not Goldschmidt, of course, but that is only one. Being a star in South Korea is hardly the same as the major leagues. However, time will tell and maybe he’ll shine. But to call him very good when he has yet to make his first pitch in the major leagues is a stretch. He should get plenty of chances with Martinez and Wainwright as major candidates for injuries. Bob, you might be spot on with the contention window….. an extra 3 years of the tear down might be their target time frame and long term plan. Just my opinion, but that just sucks for major league baseball in general.
