I am pretty sure the marketing dept wouldn’t think the org needs multiple faces

I don’t really care what the marketing dept. Thinks. Do you? I care what Bloom thinks and how he sells it to Trey. We have an opportunity to lock up our young core. If they won’t do it, Bloom won’t be here long.

Well mcgonigle is a rookie so they are comparable and some metrics favor wetherholt over him. I dont because i value a high batting avg plus getting on base but jj isnt far off. But im fine with it, i think its highly tilted in the teams favor and jj will do fine with comnercials and stuff like that. All im saying if it was me and i had that talent and know what this ownerships history is,im betting on myself. The team will either pay me or lose me. I believe in team loyalty but i dont feel this ownership does.

This ownership was loyal to a lot of their long term people. To a fault. Mo. Waino. Carpenter. Yadi. They offered Pujols a lot of money to stay a Cardinal. They just aren’t going to max out every single one of these contract extensions. They (appear) to be doing business a whole new way. And it’s the only way you can compete against the rich East coast West coast teams. You have to try to extend these other core guys as they come along or you are just treading water. Not all of them will sign and not all of them will be successful. And we are still a couple years away from it reaching fruition. When they do you will see some strayegic fa spending.I’m middle of the boat with this ownership. They were slow to react to the obvious failure of their old business model. I can’t imagine them going back to the old patch the holes to get to the wildcard strategy. And I’m not proclaiming Bloom Cardinal royalty yet. JJ was an obvious draft pick. The other guys we should extend are Mo guys. But I think we see clear improvements development wise system wide, and that was mostly Blooms work. Now we have to see if he can accurately evaluate the new players being brought in. That’s yet to be seen.

Depending on how much Mo raids the Cardinals FO this winter, potentially it could be a serious setback, as when Luhnow left and others followed. Potentially, say if Flores is recruited away, he could then recruit others.

Honestly, I can’t imagine anyone wanting to go to work for Mo and the Angels. Remember-guys LEFT Mo to go to work for Luhnow while the organization was still successful. Flores is no longer the point man on the draft. That would be Zach Mortimer. Flores is the assistant general manager. Considering we hear nothing about the real general manager, not sure how big a loss the assistant would be.

I think this will end up being a team friendly deal, but we will see. Now I wonder what they do with Walker, Herrera, Winn and possibly McGreevy.

I could see this being a good thing because the people he would raid would be the guys Mo had brought in and liked and Flores and a few guys leaving gives Bloom a chance to bring in his own guys. I could see him replacing Flores soon even if he stayed

I dont see them offering mcgreevy a deal like this. A pitcher should jump at an offer like this cause a pitchers career can be very short or at least their potential to earn real money due to injury. So teams are less likely to do this with pitchers.

From Luhnow on down, the majority of the Cardinals employees who left for the Astros received promotions vs. making lateral movements. The rub was the number of them, rather than any one individual.

To think that Flores is not front and center for the draft would be a mistake. Sure, he is an AGM. So is Moises Rodriguez, but he didn’t stop being the top exec for international. Rob Cerfolio is also an AGM, but his job is clearly player development and performance.

As of now, it seems that Bloom is serving as his own GM. That saves DeWitt Jr. money. It will be very interesting to see if/when they do add a GM, if it is one of the incumbent three, or if Bloom brings in an outsider. We talked about this on the podcast two weeks ago.

Thanks Brian. I’m sure your information is more accurate than what I gleaned out of Google.

Good for JJ. Not bad for a guy who some wanted to start the year in Memphis.

I could see Flores going to the Angels but guys like Cerfolio and the people under him aren’t going to work for Mo. No way.

Yes, Mortimer is equivalent to Larry Day, the farm director. They report to AGM’s whose primary responsibility is scouting (Flores) and the farm system (Cerfolio), respectively.

In the past, both jobs were one person’s responsibility. There was no separate scouting director or farm director. In the new world, the Cards added a new director position under each of the AGMs.

My point remains that Flores will continue to be heavily involved in the draft.

Thanks Brian and that makes a lot of sense. Flores wouldn’t jump to la with mo, would he?

My off-the-cuff guess is that if Flores was offered a GM job, he would take it, whether StL or LAA. He’d have no reason to make a lateral move, though.

JJ just closed out a July during which he hit .221 with an OPS+ 88, which would be 12 % below league average.

His monthly OPS+ in the 3 months since his hot start are May 92, June 104, July 88. That would work out to less than 100, so below league average over the last 3 months. Thanks to the 139 in April, OPS+ is above 100 on the season, but headed in the wrong direction. There are 2 months left in the season, so plenty of time to see which way the wind blows. We hope it blows the right way.

Surprising how you were quiet when he was hot. No it isn’t.

Leave it to a Reds fan to explain to other Reds fans why their MLB co-RBI leader Sal Stewart may not be a better choice as NL Rookie of the Year than Wetherholt.

I dont know what to make of it all. Just makes me like these fancy metrics even less. Ill have to look at sals real meaningful stats.

Another thing to take into consideration is that JJ has up to 112 games where there he lead off. He, unlike Stewart whose first at bat could have multiple base runners on dimishes rbi chances. And I for one am not in love with sabremetrics, however I think base running and defense should matter.

Willie, you have said you think defense is really important before. I assume you think base running is valuable as well. WAR just combined all aspects of the game to measure a player overall. The guys who have the highest WAR are goys who are good at all aspects of the game or excel exceptionally in one area. JJ has been above average offensively and base running wise, but excelled at an incredible level on defense.

WAR has been around for a long time. It’s not a new fancy metric. It gives a player credit for baserunning and defense. You can ignore and or hate it I suppose. It is, however, heavily weighted toward a players FA value. (In case you were wondering)

It’s been my experience that players always got credit for good baserunning and defense. Willie Mays immediately comes to mind, but I’m sure there were one or two others. In any case, when I was watching players like Brock, Hernandez and Smith, sabremetrics was a rating system which was put into place for the purpose of evaluating the overall talent and potential of those who competed in top tier fencing matches held in the Netherlands…
