I don’t know, Shady…The way he’s been ripping the baseball, sly old Johnny could get a genuine ace in return for Burleson…
May 29, 2024 at 5:21 pm #2543211td, that’s funny. In reality, Burly has improved his trade value immensely. But I have a feeling the Cardinals are reluctant to part with a talented 25 year-old lefty hitter that’s just coming into his own.

What about Burleson? He’s sinking like the Titanic! His last 7 games he’s now slugging .241 with a .267 OBP! His OPS is now lower than Winn & Gorman.Maybe he needs to be sent to Peoria where he can figure out how to hit again? Maybe he could figure out how to hit more than just singles?
Something to consider, considering how ice cold Burleson currently is.
May 29, 2024 at 7:38 pm #254342Too funny.
May 30, 2024 at 10:35 am #2543671td, the Cardinals may have another really good hitter coming along in Thomas Saggese. The 22 year-old infielder had a home run, triple and double for AAA Memphis last game. Prieto and Fermin have been outstanding, too. The Cardinals appear to have plenty of depth in the infield in the organization.
May 30, 2024 at 11:28 am #254369Until yesterday Saggese has had a rather underwhelming year so far. He is hitting .240 with a .714 OPS. He will need to turn it up a notch on a consistent basis before he gets the call to drive up I55.
May 30, 2024 at 11:52 am #254370Could sly old Johnny snag an ace in return for Burleson and Saggese?
May 30, 2024 at 12:12 pm #2543711td, that would be an interesting offer to a team needing some hitting.
May 30, 2024 at 12:31 pm #254372Yeah, Johnny could have his traveling secretary GM make a few phone calls and before you know it, sly old Johnny could probably hoodwink some poor and unsuspecting team out of a genuine ace SP’er for the Saggese kid and Alec the Man…Johnny’s the maestro at the art of deception!

74 wRC+ at AAA. He’s been 26% worse than average thus far. Like Burleson, he makes a lot of contact but swings at everything and won’t take a walk, so I guess it makes sense that Shady loves him . . .
May 30, 2024 at 1:57 pm #254379Guess we settled the issue of moving on from Arenado (not now), and have moved on to potential trade chips, specifically Burly and Saggese (not now also, but a stronger possibility than moving NA). 😀
May 30, 2024 at 2:55 pm #254382I think Arenado’s contract makes the discussion about him a moot point. No team is taking on that contract for his modest production and the Cardinals don’t like to eat money so he is probably staying in STL for awhile.
May 30, 2024 at 5:07 pm #254390I wonder if Nado’s back problem he had in the second half last year is still an issue? No mention of it and from what I have seen he has not used it as an excuse. It had an impact on him last year though. Looking at the recent fielding gaffes and the lack of production, it seems like a possibility.
He did look good on that four-bagger in Cincy though. Textbook form – he has as good of a swing as anyone I recall as far as balance and head down on the ball. Classic form.
June 4, 2024 at 11:41 am #255029It wouldn’t surprise me if either Arenado or Goldschmidt or both are not with the Cardinals by next season. Maybe sooner. This could open up moving Gorman to 3B, Saggese to 2B and, possibly, Burleson to 1B. Edman and Donovan could also factor in to such personnel moves. Hopefully, Walker will be able to return as the regular RF. A longer range future with Winn, Gorman, Burleson, Walker, Herrera and Saggese in the lineup is quite appealing.
June 4, 2024 at 12:03 pm #255033You keep bringing up Saggese as an MLB starter when he hasn’t hit yet at Triple-A. That cart is way ahead of the horse. FWIW, both Fermin and Prieto have been hitting far better than Saggese this season.
June 4, 2024 at 12:05 pm #255034Brian, I’m aware of what you are saying, for now. But sometimes you have to project ahead. Like I did with Burleson. Oli lights up when asked about Burleson as a hitter. I could see that scenario with Saggese maybe sooner than later.
June 4, 2024 at 12:19 pm #255035Brian-lets live in a make believe world. Tommy and Noot are healthy. Goldy and Arenado are gone. You are right about Saggesse. Shady just likes saying his name. So you have Gorman and Burleson on the corners with Walker and Donovan as the corner outfielders. Noot cf. Tommy at second and Winn ss. Contreras and Herrera share dh and catcher. Wait for it. Bill reinvest in two #2ish starting pitchers and deals with having to offload Matz/Mikolas/ contracts. So that leaves you with Gray Gipson new #2 new#2 LL. Assuming health that’s a team that is significantly better than our current version with Goldy and Arenado playing at their present levels.

Shady you didn’t discover Burleson. Sorry to burst your bubble.
June 4, 2024 at 1:49 pm #255040KCB, what I saw in Burleson (when many others didn’t) was/is his amazing hitting instincts. Despite not having terrific success at the time. I feel the same way regarding Saggese. Actually, Prieto kind of has that type of hitting instincts.
June 4, 2024 at 2:03 pm #255041RBK
Participant“Amazing hitting instincts”??? He has a .689 career OPS. At his current career peak in 2024, he has a .729 OPS. And this is from a bat-only player who is a defensive liability.
Tell us, Shady, what kind of OPS do you think would be necessary to justify regular starts (on a good team) for a one-dimensional, bat-only player? Give us a number. Let’s see what level of offensive productivity you’re willing to commit to in advance as a specific, concrete measure/standard of success.
June 4, 2024 at 2:04 pm #255042Shady don’t push your luck. Burleson was a LOT more highly regarded than those 2 guys. He destroyed aaa pitching.
June 4, 2024 at 2:23 pm #255044KCB. Burleson was phenomenal, indeed, in his last AAA season. However, Saggese was amazing as a 21 year old AA Texas League MVP last season. And Prieto has been an outstanding minor leagues hitter, too. I sure hope they can get close to Burleson’s apparent future success in the MLB.
June 4, 2024 at 2:29 pm #255045RBK
ParticipantI sure hope they can get close to Burleson’s future success in the MLB.
What does that even mean? You hope Saggese and Prieto can get “close to” some “future” level of success that hasn’t even been defined, let alone achieved? What are you talking about?
June 4, 2024 at 2:31 pm #255046RBK, “apparent future success”. Go back and read the amended version. Maybe not to you. But to me and many others. Let’s see how it plays out in the next few seasons.
