The Cardinals are in a position to challenge for the division with, basically, nothing from Arenado that is worthy of his enormous salary. He’s struggling offensively and defensively. He’s either injured, disinterested or, simply, has lost his past elite production. There are 3B replacements available in the organization. Gorman, Prieto and Saggese. If Gorman moves to 3B, Donovan, Prieto and Saggese would be options at 2B. Also, the past Gold Glove 2B, Edman. The Cardinals would likely have to eat some of his salary. The Dodgers have expressed interest in Arenado before. Maybe it’s time for Mo to make a call to them to see if something could be worked out. They might have a pitching prospect for the rotation in the near future. Or even a needed #5 starter, right now.
May 27, 2024 at 6:32 pm #253964Another option at 2B might be Fermin. Whose current BA at AAA is .360. With a 1.094 OPS. Pretty impressive.
May 27, 2024 at 6:38 pm #253966We need Scott Rolen.
May 27, 2024 at 6:49 pm #253969Shady,
I am going to answer this for you this way:
If you were the Dodgers GM and your team is in first place, and your 3B has a .798 OPS, why would you trade for Arenado and his .662 OPS?
Now, add in the fact that the Dodgers are in the top tier of the luxury tax, why would they acquire Arenado’s salary?
May 27, 2024 at 7:02 pm #253971LACardfan. are you saying the Cardinals might be stuck with Arenado’s subpar, underachieving performance this season? With not much trade value.
May 27, 2024 at 7:04 pm #253972There’s always that chance that sooner or later Arenado gets it going. Let’s hope that does indeed happen. And let’s hope it’s sooner rather than later.
May 27, 2024 at 7:12 pm #253973On the slim chance that Arenado ever gets it going, there’s always Goldschmidt to worry about…I’m beginning to think that if we’re to have a chance, Burleson’s going to have to carry this team on his back…
May 27, 2024 at 7:18 pm #253975Arenado has been a good hitter, but I don’t think really a home run hitter. He just played in Colorado so a lot of fly balls went out. If we didn’t think he needed to be a cleanup hitter he would be fine in the lineup. In other words, its not him, its management.
May 27, 2024 at 7:27 pm #253976Well Bling,
Coming into this year, he had a career OPS of .865, which would be good.
Having guys make more than $20 million per year and post OPS’ below .700 is atrocious.
May 27, 2024 at 7:29 pm #253977LACardfan. are you saying the Cardinals might be stuck with Arenado’s subpar, underachieving performance this season? With not much trade value.
Yes. And we probably have him next year, the following year and a substantial portion of 2027.
May 27, 2024 at 7:41 pm #253980In 3 full seasons in StL. Arenado’s averaged precisely 30 HR’s and 100 RBI’s a season. He still hits east of the Rockies. I think this conversation is identical to the chatter prior to Goldschmidt’s last three HR rips. Both of them will in all likelihood end the season with around 25 to 30 HR’s and somewhere near 80 to 90 RBI’s.
May 27, 2024 at 7:52 pm #253981The big 2022 season, when everyone had big years, skews Arenado’s record in St. Louis. 2021 was good, but nothing real special. A dropoff from mile high production, but not too bad. 2022 was a big year. 2023 was his worst year power wise since he was breaking in. This year is even worse. But he hits for average pretty good. His gap power is starting to decline as would be expected by now.
May 27, 2024 at 8:01 pm #253982Arenado just turned 33 years old on April 16. During spring training he played like a man on a mission.
I wish somebody could explain what happened.During the broadcast of today’s game, it was mentioned that Gorman’s BA with RISP is .069.
May 27, 2024 at 8:03 pm #253983I wouldn’t say Arenado’s ’21 season was anything special, Bling, but 34 HR’s and 105 RBI’s is pretty decent…All jokes aside, I’ve been a little disenchanted with his mitt over at 3B at times. He seems to make the flashy plays that no one else dreams about making, but the consistency and the routine plays are sometimes a bit in doubt. I’ll be redundant and repeat that I miss Scott Rolen at 3B.

ParticipantAh onetough you are echoing what ive said all along about arenados defense vs rolens. Rolen would make some special plays particularly the ones on those hard smashes or little nubbers, he seemed to never mess up the either cone in or go back thought, always instinctly did the right thing and he always made the average play though im sure someone could find a rare instance. Arenado makes the incredible plays but too mqny times gafs on a routine ball. Hes still great but im taking rolen anyday and its not close.

ParticipantSaggese has a 74 wRC+ at AAA so far this year. Definitely looks ready to step in as a MLB starter right away . . .
May 27, 2024 at 9:31 pm #253988I think Rolen was hands down the better athlete of the two, Willie, and was certainly no slouch whenever he stood in the box with a bat in his hands. He was also such a smart baseball player. I can’t remember him ever making a bad play as a result of not being focused on the game situation. He ran the bases as well as anyone and no one charged in from his position and executed the bare handed grab and throw for the out at 1B better than Scott Rolen. He also played with a tremendous amount of intensity. I guess that’s why he’s in the HOF.
May 28, 2024 at 9:13 am #254015For the Cardinals to win the division they need Goldy and Arenado to produce at a fairly high level. Goldy is showing signs of progress. Let’s hope he can maintain his level of performance in recent games. Arenado continues to trend downward. At the present, it’s a major concern for the Cardinals. Arenado is such a key to the Cardinals success. Especially, without the expected production from Walker. Right now, it’s a hot topic for Cardinals fans, That’s why I started this thread.
May 28, 2024 at 9:19 am #254017I don’t think Arenado has any trade value unless we eat the whole contract, and then it is pointless in trading him anyway. He would probably go heat up elsewhere. You have to just wait it out in my opinion. Arenado is a HoF level player (was on the trajectory), and is still 33. Sure he has been really bad the last couple of weeks, but he is likely just a few adjustments away from getting it working again. And at least his glove has been helping the team in the meantime. I know he has had some errors lately, but he is still been above average according to Outs Above Average.
May 28, 2024 at 9:22 am #254018For context, Winn (8) has as many errors as Arenado (4) & Gorman (4) combined.
May 28, 2024 at 9:57 am #254021You need fancier stats LA.

Well, at minimum it seems to be a “hot topic” for you: this is your sixth “trade Arenado” post since April. We get it.
Do you have a specific trade proposal to offer that would actually make sense in terms of value for both the Cardinals and Dodgers? We’re all ears.
May 28, 2024 at 10:14 am #254026
jj-cf-stlParticipantAnd next time put it in the TRADE IDEAS thread where it belongs, plz.
May 28, 2024 at 10:26 am #254027Yes we need to move Arenado at some point but I don’t know who would take him unless we pay half of the remaining contract. It might be better to do it during the offseason since we are currently within striking distance of a wild card spot.
May 28, 2024 at 12:18 pm #254037gscottar, the thing is, should Arenado be in the heart of the order if he’s so confused right now? Seems a short trip to Springfield (AA) for a stretch might be practical. That way he could work on getting his hitting straightened out with out being a detriment to the Cardinals.
