ParticipantLOL at “he didn’t play in the majors or professional ball.” Shildt should be named permanent manager today, period, end of story.

The verses stenciled on the Wall are still there, as are framed photos of #stlcards iconic Hall of Famers.
Shildt has added one. #cardinals https://t.co/jP3tVibB9t

ParticipantLangosch Says Shildt’s 1st Order of Business Was Axing Cardinals’ Negative Energy
The front office got rid of the negative energy. Our new manager was just the benefactor of the roster deletions and the influx of vitality from Memphis. Who’s zoomin’ who?
And Fowler going on the DL saved our skipper from the poor judgment of playing him…. and the embarrassment. Plus with Fowler not being around alleviated most of the negativity.

ParticipantThey are really pushing for Shildt to become the full-time manager. I just don’t see any harm whatsoever in waiting until the offseason.
August 28, 2018 at 12:29 pm #67133Ny, if you check the Team Chemistry thread, I debunked your theory that Fowler has not been with the team. Further, as far as I know, any negativity reported about Fowler was directed toward Matheny, not his teammates.
Your one-person crusade to not give Shildt credit for his part in the team’s resurgence is as persistent as it is misplaced. Having said that, I agree the pendulum is swinging hard in the direction of giving him a lot of attention, but it is a new subject for writers late in a long season.
Pads, FWIW, I agree with you about waiting until the end of the year to decide, and it seems that reading between the lines of a new DeWitt interview at The Athletic, that is his intent. All of the owner’s words about Shildt are glowing, though. He also singled out the hitting coaches and the improved approach at the plate.

Ohhhh, interesting. Have the Cardinals found their manager? #STLCards pic.twitter.com/1uyuCHztFF

August 28, 2018 at 1:56 pm #67144I love what Shildt has done so far, but i think it would be best to wait till end of season and determine then what to do.

MrperkinsParticipant3 year extension. Bold, but do we send out the thank you to Stubby for all he did in the organization posthaste?
August 28, 2018 at 3:35 pm #67154Interim no more!

August 28, 2018 at 3:52 pm #67157Why not?If he screws up down the road he can be fired too.I like the move. Now get rid of Fowler somehow this off season.
August 28, 2018 at 3:56 pm #67162I doubt if the team wants to pay too many managers at the same time. We are paying for two right now.
August 28, 2018 at 5:09 pm #67169Now watch us get battered our next 18 out of 20. Very unlikely as Shildt & Co. really have this runaway freight train named “The St. Louis Cardinals” hitting (and pitching) on all cylinders. In a situation like this, if I’m ownership, I insert some sort of buyer’s remorse clause into the contract, giving the team 60 days to opt out, at a 10% penalty, just in case.
August 28, 2018 at 5:28 pm #67172
MrperkinsParticipantBeing reported now that 3 years includes current year as the first year, effectively making it a 2 year extension.
August 28, 2018 at 5:49 pm #67173Hey Mr.P. – Looking from that pic, it appears wedding bells may not be too far astray for you & the lucky lady. Let’s hope next year at this time that we are all clamoring for Mo to extend Shildt’s contract out even further.

ParticipantWait till the end of the year for what? LOL, did you want to try and get a retread?
August 28, 2018 at 7:20 pm #67179I dont feel strongly one way or another about Shildt but I dont like the idea of messing with the vibe while the team is going good and it is not necessary.

ParticipantUmmm…maybe it isn’t really Shildt after all.
Cardinals are 8-1 since Dexter Fowler went on the DL. 9-8 under Shildt prior to Fowler hitting the DL.
A quote from a frequent commenter here.

Keymaster, this isn’t a “one man crusade”, but nice try. I’ve seen other stories that put the reason for the team’s success as the influx of new talent and ridding the team of the poor performers. Some of the folks here like having Shildt as manager. Many of those had a beef with MM and “anybody but Matheny” was seen as an over-exaggerated improvement.”
The new players are the driving force on this team now. OF, bullpen, starting pitchers all very much improved. They were there all the time, just not utilized. With the FO clearing the roster, spots opened they were finally given a chance. This just so happened to coincide with the managerial change.
I’ll stick with that.

ParticipantI remember reading the question/answer below from Goold’s chat a couple of days ago.
If the Cards go with Shildt next season is it fair to assume that Clapp will be plucked from Memphis by another team?
by john travolta August 13 at 7:21 PM****************************************************************************************
I was thinking that the organization is giving Clapp full leeway to accept an offer from other teams. If so, very admirable.

ParticipantThis is another comment made here. Just another example of a “one man Crusade”.

I would rank the following factors as the top 5 reasons the season has turned around:
1) The improved offense. Reasons: Carpenter, Wong, Ozuna and Gyorko all hitting better. Pham and Fowler being removed from the equation through trade or injury. Bader and O’Neill stepping up and hitting.
2) The improved bullpen. Reasons: Release of Holland. Bowman, Lyons and Sherriff sent down. Gregerson going on DL. Gomber, Poncedeleon, Hudson and Shreve stepping up and doing the job. Cecil improving from earlier in the year.
3) The improved defense. Reasons: J. Martinez not playing 1B. Fowler and Pham being replaced with O’Neill and Bader in the OF. DeJong returning to the SS position. Gyorko playing less at 2B.
4) The change of manager and hitting coaches. Reasons: Different ways of handling the players, clubhouse, lineups, in-game management, etc.
5) Improved clubhouse atmosphere. Reasons: Different manager, some different players and the team is winning.
I think all 5 are close in importance.
August 29, 2018 at 11:05 am #67262I like Shildt…i do…i like him as manager…
BUT
Arent we just repeating the same actions that led to having MM for as long as we did?
HE came in and won all those games, got to the playoffs…and we fawned over him and handed him the future…without seeing how he dealt with failure or middling…
I like Shildt…i like Matheny…i like any manager that is winning obviously….what i want though is to not repeat the same mistakes…
its been like 3 games…at least MM had to prove he could get to the playoffs before everyone decided to trust him longer…
all credit to Shildt and whatever else that got us out of the rut we were in…
but this is a streak we are on…no hardships…no major injuries destroying the fabric of the team…no major meltdowns in the pen or with stars getting paid…
The Reds went on a big streak this year…then came down…Bucs too…Rays are doing it now…SEA.. etc etc..
we deserved a big streak after everything was going wrong…and we are on it…but i dont habd out an MVP to a player after a month worth of production and success… and i definitely dont hand out a 3 yr deal to a manager who has never faced defeat and failure…
i like Shildt…i think he may be our guy going forward…but until he shows me prolonged success (ie playoffs) i am not handing him a full time gig…and that isn’t terrible of me to say nor for him to expect…
maybe it means others trying to swoop in and pay him more…and thus maybe pay him more too to keep him…but so be it…doing your due diligence is what we want to happen…not flying by the seat of your FO pants trying to swings fan support with afeel good signing during a winning streak or bringing back MAtt Adams…
i wnat to keep Shildt…but i want to see how he’d handle Fowler not playing well, Carp not hitting well, Wong and Ozuna not hitting well…losing Yadi and DeJong for more than a month…and having a bullpen without any flexibility to call on AAA to help
August 29, 2018 at 11:19 am #67266Part of the problem is that coaches/managers and their agents in all sports have snookered owners that they can’t be effective as lame ducks. Pure hog wash of course but it results in ridiculous extensions.
August 29, 2018 at 11:21 am #67268
MrperkinsParticipantPugs, that IS Mrs Perkins now. Now I’m not saying anything but if Brian would throw a 3 month pass for premium content our way as wedding gift…:) That story on the front page about the OF attained from Cle is excruciatingly enticing considering his stats so far. .397 BA as a cardinal!
