GameCard…I haven’t kept count of the E6’s or the E4’s. Edman is certainly mortal and he’ll commit the occasional E like everyone else. All I know is that I watched all or parts of every game this season and I can’t recall seeing him make what I would call a really bad misplay or an E that could be attributed to negligence or mental lapse in the field. He truly is “Steady Eddie” with the glovework at either the SS or 2B position and I think his talent is undoubtedly misplaced and neutralized every time they make the mistake of placing him in the OF. It’s silly to do so.
October 21, 2022 at 12:10 am #205075EuroDandy…I think you nailed it in the area of footwork and quickness. Those may well be Edman’s primary assets and I think they’ll only improve over the next 3 or 4 seasons. We’ll see if the GG guys are thinking along those same lines.

stlcard25ParticipantEdman in 2022 had a total of 6 errors at 2B & SS combined for a fielding % of .991 at 2B and .994 at SS
by contrast at AA
Winn had 14 errors for a % of .968
In 2021 Edman in MLB had 7 errors
In 2021 Winn in A ball had 24 errorsWell, of course comparing a major league player with a minor leaguer is going to produce a lopsided appearance. Edman has been throwing to one of the better 1B in the major leagues the last two years, saving him who knows how many errors on errant throws. Winn has been throwing to developing minor leaguers, who may well be very poor pickers at 1B.
That said, Edman has played great wherever on the IF he’s been put. He’s not been so good in the OF, so I wouldn’t be putting him out there. I think he’s either a long term 2B here or the Cards move on from him when his $$ tag goes up. For now, he and Donovan make for a very versatile and solid middle infield.

stlcard25ParticipantI’d also like to note that I was a little bit apprehensive when I read on the prospect list here that a scout said that Donovan was a 30 grade fielder. I’m glad to see that has been proven to be a misfire.
October 21, 2022 at 5:24 am #205078Given half a season to settle in, Edman could contend for a gold glove anywhere on the infield or in the outfield. Donovan appears to be rounding into a similar player, maybe a little less glove and a little more bat. That means one of them could be expendable, or could become expendable, depending on how some hopefuls turn out. But that remains to be seen. It should be mentioned that the current drooling over Winn is not unlike the same over Gorman a year ago, and Gorman’s future role has been unchiseled, at least for now.

ParticipantEdman and Donovan do indeed make a good keystone combination. It’s why some posters would like to see Winn tried out in CF. That way all 3 of them can be in the lineup.

stlcard25ParticipantIt should be mentioned that the current drooling over Winn is not unlike the same over Gorman a year ago, and Gorman’s future role has been unchiseled, at least for now.
Unchiseled only because other guys have put up career years and Marmol is a strict proponent of playing the analytical side. Gorman was predicted by almost everyone to struggle out of the gate…it’s the same pattern at every stop. I don’t think the Cards have given up on him, and I’d guess that he’s the starting 2B on opening day.
As for Winn and other prospects…this is a prospect heavy site, so that would be expected, no? For the “he’s gotta prove it” crowd, they will be right more often than not…but when they whiff, it’s a big whiff.
October 21, 2022 at 8:42 am #205085Eddie’s getting most of the print on this thread, but what about Goldy and Nado? I can’t imagine either one of them not receiving the award for their respective positions. And although I thought Donovan displayed that he was more than capable of playing anywhere the Cardinals placed him in ’22, I think lack of exposure will prevent him from winning the award.
October 21, 2022 at 9:18 am #205086There have been many good utility players over the years but the one that really changed the stereotype was Ben Zobrist. He was definitely an everyday player but he played all over the field.
As for Edman, in an ideal world he would be the starting 2B but that is not how things have played out because DeJong cratered and we need 2B for Gorman and Donovan. He is fine at SS but I don’t think that is his best defensive position.
October 21, 2022 at 9:32 am #205088Eddie is an elite defender at both 2B & SS. Donovan should be the second baseman…move Gorman to corner of or corner infield/DH.
October 21, 2022 at 9:39 am #205090I have read zero about the Cardinals even remotely considering moving Gorman to the OF. It might be time to abandon that idea. There is probably a better chance of him being traded than moving to the OF.
October 21, 2022 at 10:34 am #205092Logic moves him to LF. He serves no purpose at 2B. LF or 1B when Goldy retires.
October 21, 2022 at 10:51 am #205094bccran
ParticipantWhy would you want to put Edman in CF if he has a below average arm, Forsch? Winn has a rocket for an arm. He’s your CF candidate.
October 21, 2022 at 10:52 am #205095bccran
ParticipantIf Holliday can play LF, Gorman sure can.
October 21, 2022 at 11:52 am #205098Moving players to different positions does not take immediately. It takes time for players to learn, especially key positions up the middle. If Winn is not moved soon, it could very likely delay his MLB arrival date – if one believes he is blocked at SS, which I do not.
(Again, to be clear, I have heard nothing from anyone credible that a move has been considered, other than him getting some work at 2B in the AFL.)
October 21, 2022 at 1:02 pm #205099Did anyone credible say working Winn at 2b was planned before it happened?
October 21, 2022 at 3:06 pm #205105Bling…I doubt it was planned. The average baseball field is pretty expansive and takes up more than twice the area in sq. ft. than both a football and soccer field, so it’s relatively easy to get lost out there and end up positioning yourself at 2B rather than SS. That’s probably what happened to Winn…
October 21, 2022 at 3:58 pm #205109bccran
ParticipantThe only reason why some posters are recommending Winn for CF and Gorman for LF is pure logic. Our middle infielders right now are up for gold gloves. As are our corner infielders. It pays to be strong defensively up the middle. Edman, Donovan, and Winn would fit that bill well.
October 21, 2022 at 4:09 pm #205110C’mon, bling. No one would consider the complexity of a shortstop learning second as an alternate position to be anywhere close to the difficulty of moving fulltime to center field. But you knew that already…
What we have all read is that Winn is considered the Cardinals shortstop of the future. Some prefer not to accept it, for their own reasons. Others are happy the Cardinals have another exciting prospect nearing the majors. Time will tell how it plays out.
October 21, 2022 at 4:18 pm #205112How near is Winn to making his Big League debut?
October 21, 2022 at 4:20 pm #205113bccran
ParticipantSeems like the Cardinals drafted Piscotty, Kelly, and Wisdom the same year. All third basemen. They made position changes successfully.
October 21, 2022 at 4:21 pm #205115How many guys have shuttled between the 2 middle IF positions? I can think of one who’s done it pretty well.
October 21, 2022 at 4:22 pm #205117bccran…Maybe so, but not well enough for the Cardinals to deem them as keepers.
October 21, 2022 at 4:23 pm #205118Winn’s skills profile as a center fielder.
October 21, 2022 at 4:24 pm #2051191tough asked:
How near is Winn to making his Big League debut?
One season, maybe sooner depending on injuries to others.
