“Report: Marlins interested in Cardinals’ Michael Wacha, Jose Martinez in Stanton trade talks. https://thesco.re/2jMIMG9 ”
I would give up those 2 for Stanton and pay all Stanton’s salary. However, we would have to sign probably 2 free agent SPs to do it. Wainwright, Weaver and Martinez are the only proven starters if they trade Wacha. We don’t know if Reyes is ready to start and Flaherty looked like he needed some more time in AAA.
December 4, 2017 at 6:18 pm #38738I’d be okay with trading Martinez but with Wacha we still need him as we’re not exactly flush with quality starters right now…
December 4, 2017 at 6:47 pm #38741December 4, 2017 at 6:51 pm #38742December 4, 2017 at 7:22 pm #38744You think with Wacha involved in a trade that a starter is coming back to us from Miami, another trade is coming for another starter from somewhere or we really are going to roll out with a Rotation of Martinez, Waever, Wainwright, Flaherty-Gant and “insert innings eater here”.
They do still have to fix the pen too and if Stanton is coming they no doubt have to deal Piscotty and free up some cash to make another move.
December 4, 2017 at 8:19 pm #38746I would not trade Wacha or Jose Martinez.
December 4, 2017 at 8:41 pm #38747For Stanton I would move both Martinez and wacha and not even think twice
December 4, 2017 at 9:00 pm #38748Has there ever been a hot stove rumor with so many totally contradictory reports? All atributed to “sources”.
December 4, 2017 at 9:17 pm #38749I honestly just want to read one report, where a “source” claims Stanton is “considering” approving a trade to St. Louis.
Why? Because I apparently like to be completely heartbroken when I find out he has been traded to SF.
December 5, 2017 at 4:19 pm #38790Giants supposedly offering their 4 top prospects (only Tyler Beede is a pitcher)
https://www.knbr.com/2017/12/05/four-top-giants-prospects-involved-in-latest-stanton-deal-report/December 5, 2017 at 4:22 pm #38791Honestly, at this point, JDM makes way more sense for the Giants
https://www.knbr.com/2017/12/05/nightengale-if-giants-dont-get-giancarlo-stanton-theyll-pivot-to-j-d-martinez/December 5, 2017 at 4:36 pm #38793The giants farm is abysmal. The top four prospects… Not sure how many crack our top 20. I’d have to look but it is pretty bad.
First impression? Imo wacha by himself might be worth those four. Just saying.
December 5, 2017 at 4:37 pm #38794It’s funny on msn seeing all of the articles that go overboard about how much Stanton prefers the Giants, it’s almost like they’re hoping that if they say it enough they’ll be able to make it happen, the latest is Sportsnaut saying that Stanton will go to the Giants and that we’ll get Garcia from the White Sox, or that we should trade for him…
December 5, 2017 at 4:52 pm #38795If we don’t get Stanton, we should just trade for Ozuna.
You know he is going to be the next one traded (well, perhaps Dee Gordon).
Ozuna’s price in terms of prospects will be mitigated by the fact he only has two years of control left. I am sure the Cardinals know about what it would take to get him. My guess is, DeWitt would really prefer to come in second on Stanton anyway.
If the Giants really were willing to give up their Top 4 prospects, I don’t know why Stanton would go there. They have no chance of upgrading the team other than through free agency, which would be hamstrung by their massive payroll.
One final thought: If the Marlins already had frameworks for deals in place with the Cardinals and Giants, why increase it?
December 5, 2017 at 5:28 pm #38796Either because the Giants wanted to put themselves over the top or they got scared that Stanton was going to take the Cards offer and upped the ante…
December 5, 2017 at 5:35 pm #38797But Stanton wouldn’t care what’s going back to Miami, and would probably want them to keep as many assets as possible.
Right now, it’s not about what Miami wants back in terms of prospects, it’s about where Stanton decides he will play.

December 5, 2017 at 5:45 pm #38799Stanton wouldn’t however upping the ante might help the Marlins try to get Stanton to go to SF…
December 5, 2017 at 6:00 pm #38800According to the reports, both the Cardinals and Giants have proposals on the table that the Marlins will accept. So what’s the hold up? Is it that Stanton just can’t make up his mind? That seems pretty unlikely given that he has had weeks to think about it. My guess is that he doesn’t want to go to either place. And if that’s the case, the Marlins ownership and front office must be going ballistic.
If the Cardinals can get Yelich or Ozuna from the Marlins, then get Calome and Longoria from the Rays, they will have as good a chance as any to win their division.
December 5, 2017 at 6:07 pm #38801DeWitt has owned the Cardinals for 22 full seasons. In that time, the Cardinals have had 3 seasons with losing records. They have been to the playoffs 13 times. Been to the World Series 4 times with 2 wins in the World Series. They have consistently been in the top half of the payrolls in the league despite being in what is considered a small market. Yet, FANS of the Cardinals still believe that he doesn’t want to win or is cheap. Amazing.
I hope the Giants upping their offer helps Stanton decide to come to St. Louis. I can’t see how trading away the future from a team that hasn’t been very good for the last year and a half would make them a desired destination for someone who wants to win.
December 5, 2017 at 6:23 pm #38802@forsch, if you are going off on my comment, DeWitt made pretty clear this summer he doesn’t like deals like Stanton’s as they rarely work out. It seems pretty safe given his comments that if the Cardinals get Stanton, he is hoping Stanton opts out. Thus, somebody guaranteed not to opt-in to a backloaded contract probably has even greater appeal, even if he will be here for less time and has less potential impact on the team.
December 5, 2017 at 6:43 pm #38803If DeWitt was so concerned, he wouldn’t have given his OK for a trade proposal. To me, it appears that saying he PREFERS to come in second is a slam against DeWitt. If you are saying that he would accept coming in second due to the risk, that is something totally different, IMO.
I am sure there is some concern since no one can predict what will happen in the future. The longer a contract goes, the greater the financial risk, obviously.
My comments come from reading many posters on here over the years slamming DeWitt for not signing players. How many of those big free agent signings have really paid off?
December 5, 2017 at 6:44 pm #38804Every fan of whichever team gets a player with an opt out, should hope that when the time comes, the player does opt out. Because that would mean the team got value before the player opt-ted out, rather than tanking and not being worth the remainder of his contract.
December 5, 2017 at 6:58 pm #38805I am hoping he opts out and I think there is a good chance that he will.
December 5, 2017 at 7:24 pm #38806Hey if Stanton puts up three years like his last one, and then opts out, no Cardinals fan will begrudge him.
Whether he would choose to do so depends in large part on what Harper and Machado get next year. With the new CBA, there are enormous costs to exceeding the luxury tax by over a certain amount, so I doubt we are going to see wild overspending like the Dodgers have done the past few years. That limits what teams can spend on an individual player. It may be that teams decide no player will get more than 15% of payroll…
And yes, I’ve been critical of the Cardinals the last two years, because it was clear they were conceding the division to the Cubs. NOBODY thought Fowler was the BEST option for the Cardinals last year. He was the path of least resistance. The Cardinals have only ONCE traded in a greater than 1:1 ratio during the Mozeliak era. That’s the price of trades now. It’s nice to see the front office waking up to the fact and stretching their valuations for PREMIUM players rather than AVERAGE players.
December 6, 2017 at 9:40 am #38827What does “Cardinals have only ONCE traded in a greater than 1:1 ratio during the Mozeliak era” mean?
