Meeting between #SFGiants and Stanton’s reps does NOT necessarily indicate deal is close, not when Stanton has full veto power. SF execs simply might want to feel out situation, as @Buster_ESPN said. SFG also might pivot if it senses Stanton will say no, as @hankschulman said.
I wonder if it could be that maybe the Marlins front office likes the Giants deal but Stanton doesn’t or something like that…

I don’t think this is over yet but if the Cards refuse to beat that Giants “offer” or they don’t want to take on that much Salary the fans are going to lose their minds once again and really the Front office is going to deserve everything they get.
Because while there are rumors he may not want to play here or there nothing has been said for a fact that he doesn’t and if he wants to win the giants right now are NOT the place to be it will be another rebuilding year for them as the 4th best team in their own division.
I guess we will see if they are still alive but it sure send like they have fallen short whatever the reasons may be in the end. The other Marlins outfielders don’t move the needle for me. Good players no doubt but not the star we need like Stanton is.
Agree TexasC the other marlin outfielders are not game changers for the Cards that they need…but lets be honest if the Cards miss out would anybody here be shocked that the front office finished 2nd, as we all know that is what they are best at.
There is another possibility, however remote, and that is that the Cardinals were on the approved list and don’t need to convince Stanton to come here!!!
But realistically, it would seem DeWitt is sticking by his comments made this summer that he doesn’t want to take on contracts that can turn into an albatross and was probably trying to get Miami to pay half the deal.
Stanton in St. Louis is at best a dream.
It’s not realistic to expect the Cardinals to acquire a player the caliber of Stanton.
Even if he agreed to come here, there are other teams that would give up more talent or take on all of his salary.
One thing that sticks in my mind was this throwaway comment from a fangraphs fantasy article:

I think it was Jim Bowden that gave another opinion about the Stanton deal. He believes the Cardinals offered the best deal to the Marlins but he thinks the Marlins feel they are more likely to get him to say yes to being traded to the Giants.

For Giancarlo Stanton to move from the Marlins to a California team, there would be a major state tax increase. Some agents estimate it could cost Stanton in range of $25m-$27.5m over course of his 10-year deal. Marlins/trade partner could endeavor to offset this.

There is no timetable set for Giancarlo Stanton to decide on #SFGiants. The Giants understand there are other teams he will consider before he decides whether to waive his full no-trade clause. #Stlcards
At this point though no one truly believes the Dodgers are even interested, just keeping tabs because of the Giants. The Dodgers do have a lot of money but the tax they would be paying would be too much for even them.
