He doesn’t want to play for a loser so staying in Miami to be on the very worst team in all of baseball prob doesn’t sit well with him…he can be traded to a winner and play for 3 years and then opt out and go to Dodgers if he wants…
Your love affair with him going to the dodgers is comical at best.
I’m only passing along what I’ve read and heard multiple times by multiple people. I don’t think we should get our hopes up and the team better have a solid Plan B. All of these proposed trade scenarios mean nothing if he doesn’t want to play here.
What doesn’t make any sense is why if he doesn’t want to play here did the Marlins even talk to the Cards about different trade packages and such…
Saw on msn that the Yankees had talked to the Marlins about Stanton, though the article’s writer wasn’t sure how the Yankees could add Stanton and keep themselves under the salary limit…also saw that it’s been reported that the Giants are willing to take on Stanton’s entire contract…still not sure how they could…
Read Marlins lowered their asking take from the Giants to take on 250million of the 295million
that implies they wanted them to take on more and got turned down it seems…it also probably means the Cardinals werent going to take more than 250million either
youd have to think 250million is the max anyone has to take on at this point…at least if the Fish are getting back the quality of Panik (while losing Gordon)…and 2 of their top 5 prospects
i cant imagine the Cardinals are offering “less” value than the Giants at this point
id happily take on 250million…that’s 25m max per year…if we take on Gordon too… if we swapped Wong for Gordon i’d think that is an equivalent of Panik…and if we offered Flaherty + Bader or Sierra or Grichuk would easily best their prospect offerings
unless of course the only reason they are lowering the ask is that Stanton has said NO to us no matter what…
either our offer isnt as good as we think we will offer when it comes to whom we offer (ie. “just” Sandy)…or we are being really stingy on how much money we will take on…but id haev to think 45million off seems a given at this point
i dunno…im getting more and more pessimistic that we have any chance at all and arent on Stanton’s list…and the Fish are just leading us along to get the Giants or another team to up their offer knowing we have no chance
They talked to Cardinals as they would have talked to any team interested. They knew Staton’s preference for the west coast but they probably liked or were intrigued by what the Cards had to offer. Why wouldn’t that make sense? The strong buzz now is that the Giants will get Stanton.
I think its time we cut bait and move on. Major improvements need to be made for the team and wasting all of this time on Stanton is not good. Move on to other players and someone who wants to play in St. Louis.
My fear is that without Stanton major improvements will not be made but the front office will try to act like they did…the problem with talking to the Cards is that if Stanton really said no then there’s no point for the Marlins to talk to like 75% or more of the league, it’d be stupid for them to talk to any team that he would say no to as it’d be a waste of everybody’s time, and if we had no chance then why did we make several different offers if the reports are to be believed…
This Giants talk is only to get another offer from another team. It’s already rumored he has reservations about their depth. I think this is more to do with getting a team to commit to paying more of the salary that remains and give the prospects. 250 mil is the starting price plus three or four players. We will see shortly how this plays out but I’m not buying this Giants thing just yet.

No Stanton for the cards pretty much is going to be no playoffs next year either. Front office isn’t smart enough to make any other moves to make team better.
So, with the Marlins only needing the Giants to take on $250 million of that deal, it means either:
1. Stanton has told them no to the Cardinals and the Cardinals have not been able to convince him of a game plan OR
2. The Cardinals are trying to get the Marlins to eat significantly more than $45 millionIf it’s #1, the Cardinals aren’t showing him how he can win championships; if it’s #2, they are being cheap.
Maybe at the end of the day he is human and have every right to live where wants to and work where he wants to. There are absolutely no guarantees of winning anywhere. You will probably question his desire to win.
No, I question what the pitch is to him.
I totally get preferring Miami or LA. I would too.
But, he gets PAID to play baseball. And two days ago, we were getting reports he could be swayed. If the Cardinals show him a vision, he might buy in.
If they show him the bible club and talk about history and low cost of living, he won’t.
I thought it was about the plan of winning. Why blame the Cards? They did their best and he prefers to be happy with where lives and not about cost of living. I don’t blame anybody here. It was his choice. He had the only vote that counted. Maybe the Giants can be good again. They do also have a very recent history of winning.

Saw that same report on msn so they could be about to make the trade, or just getting the teams final offer…who knows, though if we don’t get Stanton you have to wonder if Mo and others are just bad at their jobs as they seem to fail year after year at getting top talent, or maybe we’re just not going to spend enough to get anybody good…and then the front office expects the guys that they do have to play out of their minds ever night…
How is it their fault that Stanton did not want to come to St. Louis? What were they supposed to do? On this one it was out of their hands. He has a full NTC.
There are only 2 possible reasons:
1. Stanton flat out did not want to play for Cards
2. Mo/Dewit/Girsch wanted Miami to eat a lot more of the contractI don’t know why I think it or feel it but I’m willing to go with #2 since Dewit has been known to go cheap before. There’s no way we couldn’t offer a better package than the Giants. Panik, Beebe and Shaw? Please!
There are two ways to convince players to go where they don’t want to otherwise go.
1. Throw bucket loads of cash
2. Show them how you are going to win championships AND BUILD A TEAM AROUND THEM.The first option was off the table as Stanton already has his bucketloads. So, there was one option left.
Mo has never struck me as a salesman, and so far, I am not seeing what looks like a game plan to win championships other than wait out the Cubs and hope to sneak in with a wild card.
As others have said on twitter, the reason the Cards were not given permission to speak with Stanton and his reps is because the Giants didn’t like the Cards offer, which would indicate Dewit went cheap and didn’t want to take on as much money. That would be insane considering the rising cost of contracts and its not everyday you can get a 28 y/o MVP.
And the FIRST step to getting an exclusive negotiating period is to make an offer the Marlins would accept, which means the Cardinals offer wasn’t even accepted by the Marlins
One thing I think some are forgetting is that Mo/Girsch can’t talk to Stanton about why he should come to St. Louis without an OK from the Marlins and league. He is not a free agent.
I am sure the Cardinals have tried to negotiate to a point that is favorable to the Cardinals and their future. I am sure they probably would go further than they already have but why give your absolute best offer right from the start. The Cardinals could always jump back into the mix.
I think if he goes to the Giants, it is because he wants to be on the West Coast. It certainly won’t be because the Giants can win it all in the next 2 years.
