McFarland was genuinely effective for a pretty good stretch of work for the Cardinals in ’21 when he was here. Although he’s getting a little long in the tooth, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s able to again regain the ability to record outs and resurrect his career. Obviously the three batter rule has led to a little less demand for the LHP’er in the BP, but some of these older guys who’ve been around for a while have a knack for developing a new pitch or delivery that enables them to once again consistently record outs. I liked him when he was here up until the unfortunate time when he began to take on the look of Jerry Quarry…

I remember Campbell from his part in the 85 series. After the Denkinger incident cost us game 6, the Royals got to Tudor early in game 7. He got pulled behind 3-0 in the 3rd, Campbell came in and immediately gave up a hit that allowed 2 inherited runners to score making it 5-0. I knew we were done. Later in the game Herzog and Andujar got ejected for arguing balls and strikes with Denkinger. Those two games were one of the great fiascos in Cardinals history.

That 85 rotation was so deep Bob Forsch was the 5th starter, and all 5 ended with winning records. Two 21 game winners and an 18 game winner.

He was a radio operator with the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam war and actually went out on jungle patrols. I remember Jack Buck interviewing him when he came to the Cardinals and Campbell wouldn’t talk about his war experiences. He had a lot of bad memories of the place.

“Former MLB outfielder Ted Savage has passed away, the Cardinals announced. He was 85 years old.” Saw this in MLBTR. Was a Cardinal in between the 64 and 67 titles but missed both. I had a Ted Savage model bat as a little leaguer.

Pham in a Mets uniform is good news for the Phillies and Braves.

So is junior Fernandez a free agent now?

No, The article linked to above explains it all. Basically, Fernandez cleared waivers so is assigned to Toronto’s Triple-A team. Parallels with the current Cardinals include Kodi Whitley, Scott Hurst and Kramer Robertson.

Pham with a shot to play for a winner.

Didn’t Ted Savage work for the organization in some capacity for quite awhile after he retired as a player?

He always seemed like a guy who would be pretty good, but never could quite get there. Always reminded me some of Alex Johnson. But Johnson did have some good seasons and won the AL batting title in 1970.

Correct BikeMike, Savage was a native St. Louisan and worked for the Cardinals in various capacities for a long time. I only specifically remember him working with Cardinals Care. He was also with Harris Stowe College athletics in St Louis for a good while. A well educated, well spoken man.

Evan Sisk, minor leaguer traded to Twins in JA Happ deal, is on his way to Royals along with another talented reliever with control problems in exchange for Michael A Taylor. Royals didn’t seem to get much but salary relief in this deal to me. Maybe they will quit pretending to be too poor to offer Greinke an incentive laden deal despite giving one to Aroldis when they won’t have hardly any leads to protect
