jj-cf-stlParticipantO’Neill changed his fortunes quickly. 12 months ago Mo put him on the trade block and received a throwaway reliever in return, (by their actions). One season later, O’Neill signs a 3/50mil contract as a FA.
Change of scenery candidates from the Cardinals are hot commodities.
December 10, 2024 at 5:53 pm #273038I was in Washington DC in September and caught a Nats game. Juan Yepez was in the lineup, and I he had an extra base hit.
I’m not sure why he appeared in so few games, but his OPS was .764.
That’s not a world beater, but better than the 4A lineup we fielded all season long.December 10, 2024 at 6:53 pm #273045I have no problems with letting Yepez go. We already have a glut of bad defenders who should be DH only and are slightly above average hitters. If anything he would be competing with Burly PA’s and maybe they could platoon. I don’t really like having a DH like Burly and then another bench guy be a DH only type player though as you have so little lineup flexibility.
December 10, 2024 at 7:05 pm #273047I see your point, ATM. However, Yepez and Burley only have to improve a modest amount to become serviceable players.
Some of our other guys need a reawakening to do so.
Some of the posters on here were saying if a guy plays gold glove centerfield it is ok if he hits .190!!!! Where, on a club with five Ohtani’s in the starting rotation?’December 18, 2024 at 3:37 pm #273424Mets, Alex Reyes Agree To Minor League Deal https://t.co/IsAa2afLQM pic.twitter.com/r5zFxvpCWH

Never mind….
Reports of the Mets signing Alex Reyes are false. This from a pair of sources with knowledge.
How did I become the fact checker on these deals?

December 20, 2024 at 5:01 pm #273584The Orioles are clearly desperate to strengthen their bullpen. I could stomach trading Helsely if the Orioles could put together an impressive package of prospects. But I think that would also eliminate the Cardinals from any possibility of contending in the NL Central this year.
December 21, 2024 at 6:04 am #273598Clearly, contending in the NL Central is not among the Cardinals’ plans for this year. That is, if they have any plans at all beyond saving money.
December 21, 2024 at 8:48 am #273615well, it’s Dec. 21, which means it’s time to share the story i wrote a few years ago commiserating with Andy Van Slyke and Tom Henke about sharing a close-to-christmas birthday.
happy birthday, Andy and Tom! pic.twitter.com/j0LzDvGewN

January 10, 2025 at 6:39 am #274610Free-agent reliever Andrew Kittredge in agreement with Orioles on one-year, $10M contract, source tells @TheAthletic. Kittredge’s guarantee includes $9M in salary and a $1M buyout on a $9M club option.

January 10, 2025 at 6:48 am #274612Kittredge was an important piece last year. You don’t get to Helsley without his work.
January 10, 2025 at 7:26 am #274613Balt pays $10M for middle relief. BDW payed that for starters last year.
January 10, 2025 at 7:35 am #274614
jj-cf-stlParticipantIf Kitt is worth 10mil in todays market, the Helsley trade return better “blow me away”.
January 10, 2025 at 8:11 am #274617No kidding JJ
January 10, 2025 at 8:28 am #274618I would have expected something like 2 years and $12-13 million. 1 year at $9 million with a $1 million buyout/club option seems crazy high. I will miss him though. He was fun to watch because his pitching looked so effortless. Such strange mechanics.
January 10, 2025 at 9:08 am #274622
jj-cf-stlParticipantThe last 12 months have gone well for Kitt. Mo signed a low dollar back from surgery guy, and he overachieved my expectations. But, he wasn’t even the best reliever acquisition Mo made last offseason. The rule5 guy Fernandez gets my vote.
January 11, 2025 at 8:57 pm #274721Big City news…
In more Padres player development news, former first baseman Matt Adams is expected to be a member of Triple-A El Paso’s coaching staff this year. Adams played for Mike Shildt in the Cardinals’ system and later in St. Louis. https://t.co/scZvuR4W3P
