Give Carlson some time to recover from the CHPTSD (Cardinals Hitter PTSD).
Paul DeJong is sporting a 2024 OPS+ 107 over 439 PAs. That would be 4th on the Cardinals behind Contreras, Burleson and Winn, and ahead of Noot, Donovan and the bronze busts. His 24 homers would lead the Cardinals. Not only that, he has been getting steadily better, second half OPS+ 148, August OPS+ 158.
At least Matt Svanson is looking good in the Texas League.
Saw on my news feed Mark Mulder quoted in a story about the San Fran football player getting shot.
“What an absolute hell hole of a city!” he wrote on X. “The mentally ill Libs will still tell you how beautiful it is all while they get mugged and step in s—.”
It was also suggested in the story that the issues in San Fran could affect athletes decisions about playing there.
“Former San Francisco Giants star Buster Posey also suggested that crime and drugs were a turnoff to impending free agents.”
And he could have been speaking of virtually every American city that’s been subjected to the slow and steady decay that’s been brought on by those elected to govern those urban centers for the past 40 years.
Whether Mulder is right about the causes of the urban problems isn’t a fair topic for the board. The interest is on whether FAs might factor such things into their decisions as Posey says. Some cities and their problems are more in the news than others. I would point out nobody is waiving a truckload of cash under Mulder’s or Posey’s nose to sign there. They already have their pot of gold.
The Giants have whiffed on a few big free agents the last few years but I have never read from a credible source it was because of crime. Judge decided to stay in NY, Correra actually signed with SF but then failed the physical. Ohtani was always going to the Dodgers. Snell and Chapman took SF’s money last winter though. How many of those players live downtown anyway? I’m sure they can afford to live out in the cozy suburbs.
I would also add that downtown STL is not exactly a mecca so we probably shouldn’t throw stones.
When you hear that the bullet passed right through that NFL rookie without hitting anything vital, it’s like witnessing a miracle from a distance. This kid could be dead.
News travels fast. I could see where players would want to shy away from the Giants and the 49ers.
San Francisco is nowhere near the top of cities and towns with the highest per capita crime rates. Being a big metropolitan area there will be more of everything, but when you look at per capita, which is apples to apples, SF is pretty good.
I think players look more at things like their history with the area, the potential team’s future, the personnel, and possibly tax implications.
This event with the NFL kid seems random, and potentially tragic. But it is a stretch to say San Francisco is so bad when you see many, many other area with much higher violent crime rates.
The city of StL. is certainly no bargain when it comes to being an urban area in which a citizen is at risk of falling victim to a violent crime. Many areas of the city that were once relatively safe have in the last dozen or so years become places in which I’d term as, no man’s land…I’ll tell you that!
Won’t get in to this too much as we are here to discuss Cardinal baseball, but specific to violent crime, overall it is way down over the last 30 years or so. It spiked up during the pandemic but has dropped back again since then. Obviously there are areas that will be exceptions. Common perception is that crime is up, but that is likely due to news outlets make their money covering events like that. We are bombarded all the time with news of tragic events.
I have not been to St. Louis for any significant time since 2019. I spent a day downtown and around the arch and stadium that summer, and never felt threatened or saw anything that looked suspicious. I did walk down to a brew pub for lunch called “Four Hands Brewing”, and it was located in a run down area and building that was mostly vacant. But it was quiet and nothing much was going on.
So anyway, back to former Cardinals, as Brian alluded to our boy Dylan Carlson has regressed to around his career norm with an OPS+ of 91 at Tampa. He has struck out 22 times in 82 PAs. Again small sample; maybe he will get it back together but based on career numbers he looks like a good defensive player, very athletic, but a slightly below average offensive player. Seems like we have quite a few guys like that still on our club.

I felt like Pham was set up for failure a bit. Pham should’ve only been batting against LH pitching, but injuries and his hot start had them playing him full-time there. It was like with Pujols in 22, but on a much shorter time frame.
The numbers indicate Pham failed at the main reason he was added.

Reminds me of some trash we threw away around the time we brought him in . He couldn’t do anything against the guys he was a so called expert against either.

Tommy Edman hit 2 homers last night. I’m sure people will be screaming we could’ve used that.
However he had an errant throw from CF and cost the Dodgers the lead and they ended up losing 6-3.

I’m guessing you didn’t see the play if you put that one on Edman. He made a perfect strike to the relay, Rojas, who dodged it for some reason. Rojas and Muncy have to make that play. Edman gets stuck with the error because nobody else bothered to touch it, and a perfect strike gets labeled “errant.” Muncy even said after the game that was a mental mistake on their part. Not sure if Muncy failed to communicate to Rojas, or Rojas went brain dead.
I read somewhere that Matt Adams was to sign a one day contract with STL and retire a Cardinal. There’s no shift anymore, which was his bane. I wonder if he can still play.
