Gee, I wonder which cities will be hit harder next week or next month? They seem to be trying to make plans to hit a moving target.
#RedSox CEO Sam Kennedy says spring sites, empty stadia still on table for a season re-start, if some cities remain under restrictions. "It won't be as easy as pushing play, because # of states have been hit so much harder, initially. A very complex dynamic, operationally."

March 13, 2020 at 4:31 pm #124714If they start on May 1 they could play 130 games, which isn’t bad. That would be better than being greedy and playing until December.
March 13, 2020 at 4:40 pm #124718162 isn’t happening. But I understand why they are thinking what they are thinking. I’d call it hopium induced delusion. But there are likely some rough days ahead, and we can’t just wish that away. There is no path forward without pain here. Baseball will be a welcome relief back to normalcy in two or three months.
March 13, 2020 at 4:41 pm #124719A large number of doubleheaders does impact player health issues, especially for pitchers. I agree the MLBPA wouldn’t go along with that unless significant roster size changes were made. You know that’s not happening. Some form of a shortened season is the only feasible given.
March 13, 2020 at 4:54 pm #124720Not clear, but this appears to override the info from earlier this afternoon that some staff would stay in camp for players to voluntarily work out.
#STLCards are closing camp, per a spokesperson for the team.

March 13, 2020 at 4:59 pm #124721Taken from a press release from the team. MLB’s stance appears to be to protect revenue if at all possible.
Updates on Tickets:
With regard to questions about ticketing issues, the St. Louis Cardinals indicate that, while the start of the 2020 regular season has been delayed, no games have been cancelled.
Major League Baseball is working on a variety of contingency plans with the hope of resuming normal operations as soon as possible. At this time, fans should retain their game tickets, and await further direction as details are being finalized.
Visit cardinals.com/update for information related to scheduling updates of the 2020 regular season.
March 13, 2020 at 5:13 pm #124724Even if they plan on doing 162 games with doubleheaders, you would have to think the entire schedule would have to be redone to make it happen.

jj-cf-stlParticipantGS, “How will service time be calculated”
I’ve been tossing this around since you asked the question and my reply has questions of it’s own. We know previous seasons required a player to be on the 25man for 172 of 183 days, which is 94% of the regular season.
If this 2020 season is 100 days lets say, from first game to last regular season game, then of course a player would 94 days on the 26man for 1.000 year service time in 2020? Meaning will owners acknowledge the 100 day year as the “full season”?
And to complicate that, now we’re adding 94 days (a full service year?) to an already established service time of say 3.000 service years. Add 94 days to 3.000 and we get 3.094, which is not the 4.000 service years, that usually rolls over at 3.171, then 4.000, 4.001….. So, do they take the 94 days above and multiply times 1.064 (172 /183 = 1.064) to scale it to previous “full seasons”?
March 13, 2020 at 5:54 pm #124726Good questions, jj. A lot of different ways to go – and it will all have to be negotiated.
March 13, 2020 at 5:55 pm #124727Ok, here is a clarification. Camp is closed – except for those who want to come in. For them, it is open. Sheesh…
Mozeliak says there were 57 players in camp as of today. He would guess there will be 10-15 players remaining in Jupiter, working out at the facility. When they get an idea of when baseball will restart, they will begin Camp 2. Likely to be back here, but not confirmed. #stlcards

March 13, 2020 at 6:50 pm #124731Looks like time for the scheduling guys (they always claim it is only a computer) to sit down and figure out a totally new schedule of a set amount of games (say 130-140) and keep the division matchups even and the other league games as even as possible but dispose of all 20 of the interleague games. The loss of the London Games if each team is assessed one home game lost could get things back in wack or at least close to it. Just an idle thought.
PS: I played ‘You bet your life’ today and went to the exercise class but everybody there was jittery as all get out. I used many many handi-wipes. Two more positives in Missouri today but they won’t say where.
March 13, 2020 at 8:33 pm #124732MM3, do you need equipment at the facility to do most of your exercises or can you do some at home, i.e., tele-rehab? I saw some people in masks and gloves today at the grocery store. That optic made me want to sprint through the aisles to get out quicker. I found myself taking shallow breaths, as if that would help, lol. It’s hard not to feel the mood.
As for jj’s questions, does 1994-95 establish a precedent that might be suitable to both parties?

Participantwell i think its quite possible we don’t play til may 1 at earliest, maybe later if things really get bad. It looks like the government is getting things handled but it may get worse before it gets better. If it is may 1, i don’t see anyway of making these games up. Really no reason to. Just start having meetings and set different dates to start and make seasons based on each scenario so when you actually can play, you already have an idea of the number of games. I wasn’t the biggest fan of shutting down these leagues but after reading up more on this and other times these things have hit, social distancing does seem quite prudent especially with huge crowds.
March 13, 2020 at 9:09 pm #124734Lost in all of this is the plight of MiLB players.
How Minor Leaguers are treated during this mayhem.

March 13, 2020 at 9:38 pm #124735Nutty. Playoffs in the upper Midwest in November? What could go wrong? World Series still going at Thanksgiving? Sure….
Might be the only way to get fans into Marlins Park, though… 😉
162 MLB games is very much on the table from people I spoke with. Regular season being played out through October. Wildest of all scenarios I heard having the World Series played at a neutral site – like Marlins Park in Miami.

March 14, 2020 at 5:19 am #124736Thanks ED but I don’t have any of the equipment they have at rehab but basically it is only treadmill walking and riding a recumbent type exercise machine (Nu-Step). Lots of jaw work too – socializing with other Cards fans.
I still think that the American League games could be cancelled allowing most of the season to survive. What think you?
March 14, 2020 at 6:29 am #124737Just reading over the MLB website there sure seems to be a lot of variety on different teams and their decisions on keeping camps open or just closing them. As I read it the Cards have locked down their camp but the Yankee players voted unanimously to stay in Tampa and use the camp for workouts. Other teams are leaving their camps open and making it optional for players to use the facilities. I think that the Cards exhibition in the Rangers new stadium will be totally cancelled. TCN is probably going to be my best contact with baseball for the foreseeable future.

ParticipantAnt thought to somehow working out rosters to allow for split squad games? Having the teams playing a series with home and away games with two teams.
Extraordinary times call for extraordinary circumstances. I think the public would be open to any situation during the next few months or longer. These are trying times indeed.
March 14, 2020 at 8:15 am #124739The information yesterday was confusing. While the Cardinals camp is closed (at least to the public), there is always staff resident in Jupiter as the facility is open year-round for rehabbers and others. So those players staying in the area will be able to come in and work out if they choose.
March 14, 2020 at 8:22 am #124740I love the split squad games idea but sure it would never happen.

My serious answer is that I hope that MLB does not go for any gimmick approaches.
My fun answer is this. While I have generally agreed when the Cardinals system is downgraded by some national experts (due to fewer top end talents), I have also often said that if MLB teams were forced to play all players on their 40-man rosters, the Cardinals might be NL favorites due to their depth.
As was mentioned on other threads, consider the quality of the 10 starting pitchers if the Cards had two teams. On the other hand, the offenses… Maybe a lot of 2-1 losses…
March 14, 2020 at 9:55 am #124742A 162 game season with a World Series just before Thanksgiving is ridiculous. That is a solution highly driven by greed, and thus not the best answer.
I like MM’s thought of cancelling the inter-league portion of games, and working a schedule of autonomous leave play. But with leagues having 15 teams that won’t happen. Hopefully they can work out a 130-144 game schedule, with some logic behind it and get the season done before November 1. People will welcome the return of baseball, but don’t want it forced into times when snow is flying and temps are in the low 30s.
March 14, 2020 at 11:24 am #124745Once a start date for the season is determined, #Cardinals are preparing for an 'condensed' spring training — of about 14 days, maybe 17 days — before the regular season opens. https://t.co/ONepm3Vmzs

ParticipantI drove by the complex on the way out of town yesterday. There were about 20 cars in the parking lot and no one on fields #1-#6. Weird, vacant feeling. Was fortunate to see games on the 5th, 7th, and 12th though. Hope BW didn’t go down there for naught.
March 14, 2020 at 12:17 pm #124748Another thing that will have to be worked out is players who have performance bonuses in their contracts or have vesting options based on plate appearances or innings pitched. Adam Wainwright and Andrew Miller come to mind.
