stlcard25ParticipantToo bad the Cards hadn’t beaten the lowly Pirates last night. If they had been the only undefeated team left they could have claimed a title in the 3 game 2020 season, if it so ends that way.
July 27, 2020 at 9:44 am #133810Good decision. Gives them more time to test and assess.
Tonight’s Yankees-Phillies game is cancelled, source tells The Athletic.

July 27, 2020 at 9:49 am #133811The Marlins problem will not be the last of its kind I suspect. As we see it has now affected at least two other teams with their game cancelled or postponed. I have a very uneasy feeling that the MLB season is going to go down in Virus Flames and I sincerely hope I am wrong. The Marlins have 14 – not sure split between players and staff but where do you quarantine them? They can’t be sent to the alternate site. Here I am acting like I have any input. Above my pay grade as they say. Makes one wonder how college football will every survive.

stlcard25ParticipantMy first thought when I read that the Orioles and Marlins were canceled was that the audience will only drop by a few members with that notice.
In all seriousness, though…hopefully there will be some protocols in place shortly to decide what to do if this becomes an even more widespread problem.

It makes me sad, but I don’t see any way that college football happens this fall. That’s going to spell economic doom for some places, but it’s where we are at now. Paid professionals might take the chance of COVID, but “unpaid” amateurs don’t have so much of a choice. It’s safety or no season, there.
July 27, 2020 at 10:03 am #133817That the first team to experience a breakout is located in Miami is probably not a coincidence. No matter how careful Marlins players and staff may have been, the virus was all around in their community. The odds appear to have caught up with them.
Though I will suggest that MLB’s every-other day testing may have allowed this to get away from them. They knew the Marlins already had four positive cases and allowed them to play anyway.
The real issue isn’t MLB plan as much as it is trying to execute MLB plan when COVID-19 was never contained in United States. The assumption was the coronavirus would be under control and a second wave was main concern. But it’s still the first wave that’s running wild

July 27, 2020 at 10:17 am #133819I would not be surprised if MLB asks the Marlins And Rays to find another site outside of Florida. You wonder if The Astros and Rangers can continue to play home games. MLB has to be looking at contingency plans for locations where the virus is raging.
July 27, 2020 at 10:17 am #133820A player who might have been on the edge before may now decide to jump.
It will be interesting now to see if players start opting out in the wake of the #Marlins outbreak https://t.co/BGIHc1xdYU

July 27, 2020 at 10:30 am #133823July 27, 2020 at 10:34 am #133824Quarantine in place sounds simple but they are in a major hotel and now they are restricted to their rooms and have to have everything delivered up to them. I dread to ask how many quarantine violations there will be. Seems it would be simple to fly the Marlins home and let them Q in their residence or whatever quarters they are living in. This thing could really get complicated.
July 27, 2020 at 10:36 am #133825I am not sure there is such a thing as a traveling quarantine, but yes, it has already gotten complicated, for sure!
July 27, 2020 at 11:14 am #133826I bet this prediction will be right on…
Think this is going to be MLB’s position: 1. Anticipated this could/would happen. 2. Hope it's limited to 1 team. 3. Lesson learned to double down/upgrade protocols. It is going to have to be more than 1 team badly impacted for MLB to seriously consider postponing/killing season. https://t.co/YJUakwUr2k

July 27, 2020 at 11:50 am #133831The Orioles have to wonder why they traveled to Miami in the first place. That they want to get out of Dodge ASAP is totally understandable.
SLATER SCOOP: The Baltimore Orioles now plan to leave Miami tonight, I've learned.
So, that means no game at Marlins Park tomorrow.

July 27, 2020 at 11:58 am #133832Interesting. The Phillies and the umpires and all the others who came into contact with the Marlins apparently did not get a vote. I am guessing they had no idea.
The Marlins learned before Sunday’s game that three players had tested positive for COVID-19. So they held a player’s meeting to decide if they should play against the Phillies. Can’t find that protocol in MLB’s 101-page manual.

July 27, 2020 at 12:00 pm #133833Now we REALLY get to see if MLB is going to put players health first. Remember when Manfred said players health was PARAMOUNT?! Part of the reason I’m at home right now is because players health wasn’t being put first. I can see that hasn’t changed.

July 27, 2020 at 12:08 pm #133835It turns out that the Phillies were alerted prior to the Sunday game. This article also describes the protocols when tests are positive.
Marlins’ group text message decided game vs. Phillies would be played Sunday after COVID-19 outbreak https://t.co/ixGIxNu23F

July 27, 2020 at 12:25 pm #133837This is only my opinion and you know how some folks feel about those. We have all seen 3 games with the Cards vs Pittsburgh. How well do you think they Cards kept to the protocols to keep the virus down? For me, I would give them a F minus. That is based mainly on dugout performance. The coaches all get an A because they were truly masked men and it had to be hot but the players were a mish mash with some masked and others not and a lot of bare hand to bare hand contact on ‘at a boy’ congratulations. There were a lot of rules on the ball and how it was to be handled but while there appeared to be some effort initially, tossing it around in error a time or two came into play later. If one positive player is in the lineup that player has the ability to spread the virus to many of his teammates and perhaps some of the opponents too. Just look at the dugout conversations unmasked. Awwww there I go again, thinking bad things. Get the strap out Pa.
July 27, 2020 at 12:33 pm #133838With some of these guys it’s Pavlovian. Ring a bell, blame Manfred. Good call, Price.
July 27, 2020 at 1:17 pm #133841Yes I would say the Cardinals didn’t follow COVID-19 protocol very well. And what is with those booth in the front rows. No players used them. lol
I did see a couple pirates wearing masks in the field. Which I thought was a little extra. Bell maybe needed to wear one.
July 27, 2020 at 1:39 pm #133843I agree regarding the lack of adherence to protocols. After the final out was recorded yesterday I saw several Pirate coaches and players take their masks off and give each other hugs, not to mention all of the highlights around the league of players giving each other high fives and other celebrations. Some of it just human nature and hard to prevent.
Maybe the Marlins issue is just a blip on the radar but somehow I doubt it. I foresee several games being cancelled during the next two months? Enough to cancel the season? I don’t know.
I hope these college athletic directors are paying close attention. Many have been clinging on to this alternate reality that college football is going to happen this Fall come heck or high water since that is where the funds come from for their entire athletic department, but it might be time to face the fact that it might not happen.
July 27, 2020 at 1:57 pm #133844Unless there’s a outbreak of epic proportions. I think at this point it’s too late to turn back now. The almighty $$$$ is in play and it’s not just MLB. Our society in a lot of places opened up too early due and now we’re paying the price.
July 27, 2020 at 2:05 pm #133846If Walmart can figure out how to do this even with fans (customers), it seems silly that mlb cant figure it out.
July 27, 2020 at 5:43 pm #133849I’m sorry but what a jerk move by David Price. If he didn’t want to play because of health reasons, fine. But to sanctimoniously chime in to blast Manfred at the first sign of trouble is self-serving and shows a lack of class in my opinion. Sounds to me like he’s feeling a bit of guilt for not joining his teammates, and he’s hoping to apply maximum pressure for the league to shut down so he won’t look so bad for not playing.
July 27, 2020 at 7:04 pm #133852Since this is a virus thread I will mention that I am watching the Royals playing the Tigers on TV right now and I would not be surprised if the Royals were not looking for Positive guy to cough on all of them so they could go home until 2021…..LOL
