I don’t see how either side can negotiate around this, especially with the players saying how they would be jeopardizing their lives by playing baseball.

The Blue Jays player exhibiting the symptoms is a pitcher on the 40-man roster who recently had spent time with players in the Phillies’ minor leagues system, according to sources. He has been tested for COVID-19 and is awaiting results.

The question these outbreaks raise for me is whether daily testing began the day the employees reported or testing did not occur until someone reported symptoms. One approach is proactive, the other is reactive.
P.S. Having said that, any time people are not in a bubble and mixing with the general population, the infection chances increase. Earlier testing would just get it contained faster – it wouldn’t stop it.

I go to work everyday and immediately when I walk in the door I get a squirt or hand sanitizer and my temperature checked. Then I’m to read off a board if I had any of the 6 major symptoms. Naturally this doesn’t do anything for people who’ve been asymptomatic.
COVID positives are going to happen if you’ve got states like Arizona, Florida and Texas who lifted restrictions too early. I though lifting them before Memorial Day here in San Diego was a foolish move.

The Giants recommended that others who had been at the facility should also get tested and most chose to do so. To date, there have been no positive test results but obviously several are pending.

It is also important to note that the Korean population dealt with the virus threat differently than Americans.
1. Player shows COVID like symptoms.
2. Facility gets shut down immdly.
3. Player gets tested and everyone gets sent home.
4. Test comes back negative.

Just heard that several Phillies and staff members have tested positive at their complex in Clearwater. Complex is now closed indefinitely.
They should never have shut down because the economy has been nearly destroyed by the shutdown and we had to spend trillions of dollars that we don’t have in order to save our country, and our world’s economy, from a depression that might have ended life as we know it. Two thirds of the deaths were people in nursing homes. We should have mounted an overwhelming campaign to protect old people and people with pre-existing conditions from the dangers they face. We all know that death is a fact of life. Many people die from the flu every time there is a new flu and a new flu season. It’s not a nice thought. But getting older and older and older with no hope in sight is not a nice thought either. OTOH, being old and having the insight and wisdom that comes with it is a beautiful thing. Just my opinion and I’m not here to argue about it.

Source: with 3 camps having to close today due to COVID-19, MLB is strongly considering closing all 30 camps again to cleanse and re-establish a system in which players will test regularly when they return. Right now there is not a firm protocol for players using the facilities.

I think we have to accept that some are going to test positive. Need to have plans to continue even in that event – larger rosters, more testing, etc. This goes for baseball and many other businesses.
This seems to say the Rangers didn’t have testing in place before they opened camp. Why in the heck not?
Rangers have suspended workouts/activity at spring facility in Arizona until testing protocols are in place, perhaps by early next week, says source.

I am with Mudville on this issue. Older people like me can take care of themselves pretty well but young people have only a very small chance of dying and will have antibodies when they recover. Most people are never hospitalized and go through recovery at home. If we keep trying this shutdown and total face masking there are just too many that will not comply such as protests and rallies. Also, the majority I see while driving to pickup groceries are not wearing masks (Walmart workers do). Hopefully a vaccine can be developed soon and the word is looking good for some therapeutics but the economy cannot take another hit like we just had without a really severe depression. JMHO and,like Mud, I don’t want to argue it.
I haven’t hit the eighties yet, but I am also in the high risk group. I will add that many of those in the ‘high risk’ group do beat this virus, although that’s not to say that I am interested in taking a crack at it.
I sure do miss not being able to watch our prospects develop. Of course, everyone else here does, too.
