16 MautzMautz and Hansen are interchangeable at this point. College pitchability types with good command of their repertoire. Both seem able to stay healthy. Much like McGreevy.
Someone mentioned Granillo. I have him a little lower. I am concerned that he hasn’t reduced the walks. If he can continue to contain traffic in AAA I would move him up significantly.
There’s a few starting pitchers being thrown around out there so I want to give a side-by-side comparison.
Bedell / 24 / High A / 2.44 ERA / 96 Innings / 106 Ks / 34 BBs
Mautz / 22 / Low A / 3.98 ERA / 104 Innings / 115 Ks / 45 BBs
Showalter / 19 / Low A / 2.30 ERA / 31.1 Innings / 42 Ks / 15 BBs
Hansen / 23 / Low A / 3.09 ERA / 113.2 Innings / 126 Ks / 39 BBs
I can see why all of these guys are getting about the same love. Bedell has the best numbers, but is the oldest (5 years over Showalter!). Hansen has the next best numbers, but he’s 23 and still in Low A. Showalter looks fabulous for a 19 year old, but we’re talking about a small sample size of only 31 innings and 1/3 of those came from rookie ball. And Mautz is on the younger side, but has slightly worse numbers. I think there’s a good argument for any of them around this stage as far as starting pitchers go. Also, Paniagua is in this mix too. I don’t really have a point here. I just wanted to look at them all together so I thought you may too.
Jnevel, thanks for posting comparative stats on the A ball starters. Each has an argument for ranking one ahead of the other or vice versa, but they all clump in the same group. I have Mautz ahead because of only 4 homers over 23 starts and because in August he struck out 18 against 1 walk, which struck me as outrageous, but went unrecognized. Not that those are compelling reasons, but somebody had to come first on my list. Bedell did it a level higher, Hansen got the org’s attention, Showalter has the age advantage.
Paniagua has been in the org since 2018 and is getting old for his level of accomplishment. He still has trouble throwing strikes. Never swinging might be a profitable tactic when facing him, which he may run into when he faces advanced hitters in the upper levels.
Thanks Jnevel, another pitcher to add to the TOP20 could be Mathews.
However, I would like to talk again about left-hander Drew Rom.
Let me exclude the 33.2 IP at the major level, perhaps not yet ready, although the 32 K and the excellent game in Baltimore should be noted. His path in the minors was as follows:2018 (18yo) RK Lev. 30.2 IP, 1.76 ERA, 2.78 FIP, 28/6 K/BB, 8.2 K9, 1.8 BB/9, 4.67 K/BB
2019 (19yo) A Lev. 95.1 IP, 2.93 ERA, 2.46 FIP, 122/33 K/BB, 11.5 K9, 3.1 BB/9, 3.70 K/BB
2021 (21yo) A+/AA Lev. 107.2 IP, 3.18 ERA, 3.28 FIP, 120/26 K/BB, 10.0 K9, 2.2 BB/9, 4.62 K/BB
2022 (22yo) AA/AAA Lev. 120.0 IP, 4.43 ERA, 3.22 FIP, 144/47 K/BB, 10.8 K9, 3.5 BB/9, 3.06 K/BB
2023 (23yo) AAA Lev. 97.0 IP, 4.82 ERA, 3.66 FIP, 118/50 K/BB, 10.9 K9, 4.6 BB/9, 2.36 K/BBIn six years only once in IL (18 days in 2022).
He’s not going to be an HOF or even an All Star Game player, but in my opinion he is a pitcher who is much more likely than many others to consistently arrive at the 4/5 spot of the rotation or be used in the 7th/8th inning.
In his case I look more at the floor than the ceilingP.S. sorry for some errors in my bad English 🙂
What do you all see in Showalter?

He had the lowest ERA and highest K/9 of the top pitchers in the system. His WHIP was clustered around that of about eight other pitchers.
Seeing Rom’s Age 19 right next to Showalter’s does make it more interesting.
I’ll change my vote up.

#16 Travis HoneymanI think injuries are the only thing that have really held Bedell back. He has 4 average or better pitches and pretty good feel already to work them in a game. A little old for A ball due to his injuries, but he dominated the way he should have in Peoria. Double A will be the real test and I think he will likely start the season there.
As far as Honeyman, he had great tools coming out of the ACC and this might be a little low based on some of the projection from experts, but with no professional experience to go on last year, time will tell.
Thanks louisEu. I agree Rom should be in the discussion. His MiLB record is worthy. If we are not penalizing Winn for troubles in MLB, we should also not penalize Rom.

He’s intriguing, but he’s low on the innings count with just 31 innings, 10 of which were at Rookie ball. Like someone said, Numbers-wise, Rom put up the same numbers with 3x the innings at the same age.
I didn’t know if there was something I’m missing.
Regarding rating Rom, he was barely over 90 MPH on his fastball last year. I just don’t see him above some of these other pitchers right now. I do think he’s top 20.
I wouldn’t think Showalter should be ranked yet. I like him, but I have to rank Hansen, Rom, and Cornwell above him because they have had success at higher levels. His ceiling might be higher though.

I’ll stick with voting for Honeyman at 17. He looks extremely promising. But I am a bit worried that he didn’t play at all for the Cards in ‘23. I like Bedell, but I have Granillo one spot higher. Granillo is my favorite reliever to come up through the Cards system in a long, long time. He has great weapons which lead to numerous strikeouts and a closer mentality. Because of injuries in college, the Cards were able to steal him in the 14th round. I’m both convinced he’ll be our future closer and that he’s likely to see action in the StL bullpen in 2024.

#18 – Drew Rom – I don’t blame him for his performance in MLB this year, he was fed to the wolves. And seeing Rom’s A level stats compared to Showalter’s, Hansen & Mautz, I have to go with Rom.A
