Thanks for the info Brian. Two takeaways I have are:

    1. They would certainly trade CMart if the right opportunity came along but they aren’t going to give him away.

    2. They don’t envision Knizer as an everyday starter at the MLB level. Period. I find that disappointing.

I didn’t get the first feeling from Mo’s conversation. While I’m sure the second half of the first point is true, as they do feel the rotation will be competitive.

As for your second point, I agree totally that the organization doesn’t view Knizner as having a future as a starting catcher for them. They made that clear with their actions last summer. He was mentioned a couple of times but I think the Cards see him as a bat first backup.

Lots of interesting comments by Mo. Thanks for sharing, Brian. Sorry to hear that they are only going to have 1 GCL team.
Glad Mo understands that having new faces can invigorate interest with a segment of fans. Sometimes hope and interest wears thin when you go with the same horses that have already been given the opportunity and haven’t produced. Also interested that Mo talked about Goldy making the whole infield better defensively and then equated that to Bader making the whole outfield better because of his range into the gaps.
Guess I’d better change my thoughts on Bader and get used to him being out there in 2021.

Bc, Bader says “this one’s for you.” Apparently GIFs still don’t post properly on this board so here’s the URL:

I find it strange that Mo states that he likes to keep the roster fresh when they usually do the exact opposite. How many trade deadlines in a row have we had nothing but crickets? There usually aren’t many offseason moves either except a few smaller moves.

Getting JERK-OH back would be fine with me. Any residual feelings?

Article wants a 2B/3B acquisition and I question the 2B need. Edman hits lefties best, .929 ops at mlb. Sosa can handle backup 2B.

3B / corner OF, vs LHP’s, seems a more needed backup role filled.

How about an offense that doesn’t finish in the bottom half of the entire league in offensive stats?! Imagine acquiring Goldy and then act as if your job is finished.

Goold wrote in his chat Monday that neither Gyorko nor the Cards are interested in a reunion. FWIW, I had already guessed the same.

Brad Miller seems more likely, but he may have played himself off the team by playing too well.

I figure after retaining Yadi and Waino, we will celebrate our new Korean import outfielder and Miller and call it an off-season. One or two non-roster invites just before camp.

If you get the Korean on the cheap and can get Joc then you might be on to something.

I don’t necessarily think you need to turn a team but some refresh with 1-2 FA every year is never a bad idea but we along with other teams are going through some unprecedented times.

We need a RH 3B to share time with Carp for one year. If it isn’t Gyroko then it needs to be someone similar to him. I suppose it could be Sosa if he is up to it.

The article didn’t like the FA’s available so maybe said player comes by trade. You know who I like JD Davis, who has mashed lefties minors through majors. You have any trade ideas for 3B backup GS?

Not really. I have been more focused on cheaper FA’s since our budget seems to be so tight. I think Gyorko, Alberto, Hernandez, or Profar would be good. Maybe Todd Frazier but he doesn’t have much flexibility defensively.

JD Davis would be great but what kind of return would the Mets want? How about O’Neill, Ponce, and Oviedo?

I watched the entire video of Mo’s chat or press conference or whatever it was and I was impressed. M is the BS artist of all time but not that day. He gave clear and concise answers to all questions with very little Mospeak. His candor was refreshing. His answer to Goold’s question about how can a team get better if it’s the same team was a good one. He simply said it can or it can’t. The plain honest truth. I took away that there won’t be any big deals and they want to look at the outfielders they have rather than bring in someone from the outside. The only thing he said that amused me was that he was excited about the roster as it is right now. How anyone could say that is beyond me but Mo has no choice as PBO, he can’t say I’m not excited about the roster we have. Overall, it was a good session and I hope he is as open and honest in the future. I’d give him an A for the chat.

O’Neill, Ponce and Oviedo is literally an exact match on the trade values site: $17.2M each. I’d prefer to trade Bader for him as at $19.3M he’s another close match and I’m a bit higher on all three of those guys than Bader alone.

As I mentioned the other day it appears the Cards are growing tired of messing around with CMart.

The team was awful last year offensively. And the year before wasnt great either.

Take away Wong, Miller from last year (maybe even Yadi too) and how are we better? How can anyone be excited about the team?

We havent added anything, in fact we took away or havent re-signed 3 starters.

-Knizner is really that much of an upgrade over Yadi? I don’t think anyone can guarantee that, also even looking at Kelly when given the reins in ARZ hasnt exactly been a powerhouse hitter, and he was supposed to be that
-Edman had all year to be good and wasnt, and let’s not act like he was up and a high producer even in 2019, he was only up a short time
-Carp as replacement for Miller…well that is terrible…no upgrade…and even if it is Sosa it is no MAJOR upgrade

Sure, a full season of Carlson will help A LITTLE

But what of last year from Bader, ONeill, Thomas, Fowler shows any amount of offensive progress?

This team has gotten worse since the end of the season, not just by age, any minor upgrades (Hicks return, Mik return, full year of Carlson) is entirely mitigated by other losses (Hudson out, Waino not back, CMart terrible, Carp older and bad, Miller gone, Yadi not back, Wong gone, Fowler old and middling at best, Oneill regress, Bader no improvement, Thomas still just hopes and dreams)…also we have no immediate upgrades ready and waiting to take over outside of Knizner who is at best a fine hitting catcher not an ALL star level hitting talent. Closest talent we have is late 2021 and is basically ONE guy in Gorman. I like Thorres and Capel and Montero but are they really difference makers?

This team is not good as constructed, and it is disingenuous to present it like it is brimming with excitement and untapped potential.

Why do the fans ask “what’s next?” well, because the moves and solutions are half measures at best (aging Goldy, 2nd choice Fowler, pay Carp ahead of time after a bad year).

    We need:
    – a lead off hitter (2b or 3b, or OF)
    – a MOTB (2b, or 3b, or OF)

    – Yadi
    – Waino

-one more starting rotation depth piece

-We could probably find a cheap-ish short term lead off solution (Cesar Hernandez?,LaStella)
-MOTB you have to invest with money or with a trade (Arenado trade, HaSeong Kim signing)
-Yadi and Waino should be easy (10m plus mutual option and buyout for Yadi),Same Waino deal as last yr)
-a cheap veteran swing/starter should be easy to find short term (throw several minor league deals with ST invite and guaranteed money if they make the team deals…maybe Urena, Gio Gonzalez, Rodon, Folty, Taijuan, etc. etc.)

It’s not the best stuff out there, but would make us better than NOW, and better than last year, and provide at least a little bridge to Hudson return, Gorman, and the freeing up of a lot of money for 22

but limping to 22 is not “exciting” by trying to rehash the same and less players is insulting…How many years do we have to hear about Carp coming back and the veterans turning back the clock, Bader and the OFers making progress, and surprises out of nowhere

We have no offense savior to focus on for 21 like Carlson to distract us from the mediocrity, aging and underperforming everywhere else (yes i include DeJong and Goldy)

    Moves IMO:
Arenado and Merrifield trade, Yadi and Waino, and a dartboard throw at the middling starters
    next:
Merrifield trade, Kim signing, Yadi, Waino
    next:
    Merrifield, Lastella, Yadi, Waino
    next:
    Cesar, Kim, Yadi, Waino
    cheaper:
    Cesar, Lastella, Yadi, Waino
    Chepaer:
    Cesar, Duvall, Yadi, Waino
    cheaper:
    LaStella, Duvall, Yadi, Waino
    cheaper:
    Alberto, Yadi, Waino
    cheapest:
Yadi, Waino…and a lot of hope, lies, and dreams..which has been an active part of the roster for the last 3 years

    blah blah blah..i know

Edman had all year to be good and wasnt, and let’s not act like he was up and a high producer even in 2019, he was only up a short time.

Edman is a 4 WAR player in 576 career PA. Not sure what you mean by the statement that he’s not a producer. If the Cards had a 3B, he’d be plenty fine as the 2B and backup SS. He doesn’t belong in the OF unless you have no choice, though.

VEB brought up Jed Lowrie as a potential guy to look at this winter. He’s a switch hitter and had two good years in Oakland before missing basically all of the last two years. He’d be very cheap, perhaps as a minor league deal/camp invite guy. He is 36 though so it’s not something you can bet on, but could be an option?

If we sign Na, our outfield will be set. I suspect we will see a major trade, but that depends on the market.
I recall Ozuna tweeting about being a package with Yadi, and he doesn’t seem to be someone we wanted back. Still, how could we pass up deal like Atlanta got last year.

GS, I’d prefer Bader for Davis, as Stlcards25 mentioned, vs your 3. Either package opens an outfield spot, is about salary neutral on our side, but it comes down to what the Mets want in return. We know they want to upgrade CF, but they’re also in on Springer 🙂

If we could snag Davis, sign Pederson for LF and push Carlson / O’Neill / Thomas to CF, I’d be a happy camper. Sure we’d need an affordable catcher, I’ll just say Casali, but I’d like that offseason. Davis at 2.7mil, Pederson at 10mil, and Casali at 1.3mil would put us at 140mil, 82% of last season.

Davis and Pederson could be a platoon at cleanup. Both have enough pop. Which means we probably spend that 14mil and more on Yadi and Adam! What will Mo do……
