Just a theory, but if I am charged with architecting the construction of a team, I am going to have a high level of personal buy-in and pride and be depressed if I have to get rid of one of the cornerstones to save money.

His reference that different players had varying symptoms when they contracted the virus. That it hit some harder than it hit others. I wonder how much of an effect it had on DeJong.

Viva El Birdos had an eye opening article on COVID’s effect on the Cards. Literally every single player, except Kodi Whitley, who tested positive regressed and most were “shells of their former selves.”

Just remember, those of you who have been critical of Carlos Martinez, that COVID put him in the hospital multiple times. Six weeks later, he was on a major league mound…

Maybe Carlos can earn his $11.7 million 2021 salary.

To the Hand example, what will be really interesting to me is if the rich seize on this to get richer. Meaning, if the deep-pocketed teams like the Red Sox, Yankees and Dodgers start scooping up these good players cut loose.

    Or the Cubs.

Good points. I think Lane Thomas falls in this category as well.

    Or the Cubs.

Imagine Wong and Baez as a double play tandem up the middle next year in Chicago. 🤢

Yes, Mo called out Thomas specifically yesterday as one of the worst COVID cases. I had mentioned it on the OF thread, I believe. He had trouble breathing and dizziness at times.

Unless Ricketts was lying, his 2020 losses were “biblical”. Most of the recent focus has been how hamstrung their payroll has been. I am reading stories that they might even let Bryant go. So will the Cubs really be buyers? Guess we will see…

Maybe a couple of players see them as contenders and hop on over for cheap. Pederson and Wong in their lineup?

I would imagine that the news of the last couple days doesn’t bode well for someone like Rosario in Minnesota. He seems like a non tender candidate. Taylor Rogers might be another non tender.

Especially, a lot of arb3 guys (like Bryant) have to be sweating. As I think someone mentioned, our old friend Tommy Pham could be another among them.

The Cards have only one arb2 player and no third-year ones, which is another reason why Mo said yesterday that they have few options to “create flexibility” = make cuts.

Hopefully the COVID victims will all be at full strength in the Spring. A lot of eyes analyzing the long-term medical impacts. Makes Freeman’s recovery and performance this year all the more impressive (I remember he had a pretty bad case).

Covid didn’t have negative effects for all players. See Arozarena.

    36 or 38? I don’t understand.

Ok, the correct number is 37 plus Hicks, who I don’t understand why has not been restored yet from the restricted list. A Cardinals staffer is looking into it.

I do not agree about considering Ryan Braun but I do agree there will be some cheap power available if DeWitt can scrape up a few pennies under the seat cushions.

Absolutely no way on Braun. But I do agree with the sentiment. Pederson would be the ideal choice, to me. But Rosario might be a good, even cheaper option. If there was a DH, he’d be a natural fit.

The DH decision will be huge. Nelson Cruz will probably be out of our price range but guys like Carlos Santana and Domingo Santana would be affordable as DH choices.

Without the DH Pederson is the best bet.

I would try to get a third baseman or a righty-mashing OF before a DH. But maybe DH guys will be at the bottom of the bargain bin. Honestly, I am not confident they will get any of them if they re-sign Yadi and Waino.

I don’t see why Rosario or Pederson wouldn’t be fine as the DH too. It would allow us to put a better defensive OF out there and keep the righty mashing bat in the lineup.

An article on some KBO players who could come over to MLB this off-season, or soon.
