Yeah, Ivan hasn’t hit much recently, that’s a fact. After hitting quite well in 2024, even better in 2025, and very well through late June, Herrera stopped hitting. And I think there’s a pretty simple reason for this: Ivan Herrera started the first 101 games in a row this year. Small wonder that he finally wore out in July.
On June 24, his OPS was .824, and his BB/K on the season was an outstanding 48/55. Since then he’s walked just 3 times and fanned 29. That’s a guy who is tired and pressing badly — if not hiding an injury.
And speaking of injury, what kind of player should NOT play every single game, week after week, month after month? I would say it’s a part-time catcher who went on the disabled list multiple times in the previous season with leg injuries.
Look, Marmol deserves a great deal of credit for the McGreevy/Pallante usage of Herrera behind the dish. Ivan never catches two days in a row — which is quite wise — and both twirlers have been terrific with Herrera catching them in 2026.

(And DH’ing is NOT a day off. When you DH, you still have to hit a round object moving 95 MPH, which requires the most concentration & coordination of any professional athletic activity known to man. And you still have to run the bases, which takes, well, a bit of effort anyway.)
Man herrera really has it rough on those dh days. Im surprised he can make it home at night. Maybe hes sleeping in the clubhouse.
I’m not opposed to keeping May for a qualifying offer…I would like to move on from Liberatore, at this point. He doesn’t appear to be a quality starting pitcher.
Pass. He’s third on the team in innings pitched and WHIP, 4th in ERA.
They have Mathews to replace May in the rotation and Dobbins to replace Liberatore.
The possibilities are 1) He accepts the QO 2) he declines the offer and signs for $50 mill plus, (the best outcome for us), or 3) he declines the offer and signs for under $50 mill.
There is a fourth possibility, and one that is more likely. The MLB has already proposed changing the qualifying offer system, which means the Cardinals might get nothing if May walks.
I would rather they spend $20 million to sign Arazorena to play LF if they trade Nootbaar.
The Cardinals have identified late 2027 or early 2028 as their next competitive window.
They will not be competing in late 2027 if they trade any of Nootbaar, Burleson, or Herrera without backfilling them in free agency.
I looked at the box score of the Cubs-Cardinals game the other day. Every single Cubs starter had an OPS over .700. Five of the nine Cardinals starters had an OPS below .700.

It’s not going to make you a true contender. But that along with beefing up the bullpen would be a smart gesture toward the fans and the players while we wait for the rebuild to be completed.

Interesting questions. If I had confidence in Baez I would have no interest in signing Arozarena. I just don’t want to watch a whole season of sketchy offense throughout the whole bottom half of the lineup. And Baez isn’t going to bring his high strikeout and whiff rate to StLouis and have it suddenly be better. I want to see some improvement before I hitch my 2027 horse to that cart. Maybe bringing him up after trading Noot is a way to get a glimpse of what that might look like? Or maybe not. He probably belongs in aaa until those numbers improve. I’m not for impeding the rebuild. But you have to throw the paying customers a bone don’t you? I would be for signing Aroz until Baez improves his whiff and strikeout “‘s. I’m talking 1 year deal. Flip him at the td if Baez is really ready.

I don’t want Arozarena. I bet the FO doesn’t either. Baez should not be in Memphis in 2027, if there is a MLB season. Don’t forget about Cho, as he would likely be at AAA next year, with a 2028 STL eta. Before the season I wasn’t high on Cho, but he has had a big season.
I don’t “want” Arozarena and the fo may not either. But I do “want” an outfielder who k < 40% of the time. We don’t have anyone ready who fits that description. And yes, unless Baez shows improvement at aaa he will k 40%. We can’t regress as a team from 2026 if you want the fan base to take you seriously. So you need to bring in an outfielder and flip him like you did May for the pitching staff. It doesn’t have to be Arozarena. But it can’t be low hanging fruit either. We already have that. And it’s getting worse with trading Noot.
