May, Romeo, Bernal and probably Noot are gone. I think we just may hang on to O’Brien.
July 30, 2026 at 1:16 am #314543I could buy Ivan but man his value is really limited due to his inability to throw runners out. He’s darkhorse IMO I’ve heard Crooks sprinkles and Pages. NO Bernal unless its package to Seattle.
Pretty Much May, Romero and Stanek are gone. The thing with Noot is the work stoppage. I think they maybe throw a package out with maybe the definate trade guys for some higher end high A, AA not quite 40 man talent.
I think the work stoppage really throws a wrench into things this deadline. Win now teams might be willing to give more. For us I think we want guys a year or two away but at least potential MLB contributors.
July 30, 2026 at 11:28 am #314560I think Noot has done enough since coming off the IL to warrant some trade interest. I would be surprised if we didn’t trade him. I don’t see us bringing him back next season so might as well pull the plug on him now instead of waiting to try to do it during the very unstable offseason that is on the horizon.
July 30, 2026 at 12:30 pm #314561Gotta’ love Bowden. Right after he says it would be a mistake for the Cards to be sellers (see clip on the prior page), he talks about how the Cards and Mariners match up well for a trade – Herrera plus a reliever for one of Seattle’s starters.

July 30, 2026 at 3:08 pm #314571I’d be looking east rather than west for a possible trade involving a St. Louis catcher. The ChiSox are in dire need of a receiver. I think Leonardo Abdiel Bernal would look mighty fanciful in a White Sox uni.
July 31, 2026 at 10:19 am #314637Just one opinion there, but it is worth noting that none of the many Cardinals reportedly on the block are among the top 25 players apparently available across MLB.
Welcome to The Athletic’s MLB trade deadline Big Board, a collection of players who could move between now and Monday’s deadline.
This is the final installment of three Big Boards we’ve published.

Cardinals armed with catching depth
As they look to sell off players on expiring deals, including right-handed starter Dustin May and reliever Ryne Stanek, the St. Louis Cardinals can capitalize on the industry-wide scarcity of catchers if they choose.
The Cardinals are carrying three catchers: All-Star Ivan Herrera, reserve Pedro Pagés and rookie Jimmy Crooks. But their long-term backstop likely resides in the minor leagues, with Leo Bernal in Triple A and top prospect Rainiel Rodriguez in Double A. The Cardinals have identified late 2027 or early 2028 as their next competitive window. The projected arrival of both catchers aligns with that timeline.
So, could St. Louis deal from their major-league depth? According to rival executives speaking anonymously to speak freely, the Cardinals’ asking prices are high, and there are concerns Herrera might not be a catcher long-term.
Herrera’s arm has always been a weakness, and he has thrown out just one of 29 attempted base stealers this year. That the Cardinals would prefer he catches no more than twice a week is also a telling sign that they don’t see Herrera as their long-term solution at the position.
The Cardinals, though, are exceptionally high on his bat, and don’t feel particularly inclined to move him, those executives say. The Cardinals are also high on Pagés as a backup, citing his preparedness, game-planning and strong relationship with pitchers. Thus, the catcher the Cardinals would be most open to moving is Crooks, a 25-year-old left-handed hitter who won’t be eligible for arbitration until 2029.
President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom will listen on all three players if the right prospect package is involved, but as he prepares for his first deadline at the helm of the Cardinals, he is under no pressure to make a deal.

Of course they are open to moving somebody hitting .170.

ParticipantIt wouldnt surprise me if the cardinals dont move anyone. If they were really wanting to and to get good return possibly, they would have just turned catching duties over to crooks and pages. Herrera is already known, just use him as a dh. Crooks would have gotten more at bats which means his numbers might be better or at least they would tell a more complete story. Im just not sure this organization has enough people with baseball eyes. They prob have plenty of people that can quote a multitude of statistics though.
July 31, 2026 at 12:08 pm #314654Citing BA for a part time platooned rookie is some real in-depth analysis as to his value! With that kind of insight, I’m sure glad some of our posters aren’t making real trades.
July 31, 2026 at 12:37 pm #314663I wonder where the Athletic got their info about Herrera, Pages and Crooks?
I’ve seen other sources claim they heard they were open to moving Pages.
Trading Crooks after only playing a few months in the big leagues seems a little reactionary. Of course they could know something I don’t know, but so far we’ve heard nothing but praise about his preparation and skills with the pitchers.

July 31, 2026 at 12:43 pm #314666If I recall, Katie Woo was one of the authors. She is a good reporter.
July 31, 2026 at 12:55 pm #314669I am not questioning her reporting skills. I am just curious about the accuracy of the information she is receiving.
Derrick Goold was the one who reported they were listening to offers on Pages. I am sure they are listening to offers on a lot of people.
July 31, 2026 at 1:35 pm #314670I’ve seen Goold cited as a’Cardinals insider’.

July 31, 2026 at 1:46 pm #314672Burly sprinkles out there. Rather move Herrera unless he gives up catching. I know they like the hitting upside but he hasn’t hit much recently and has an injury history.
July 31, 2026 at 2:08 pm #314679Everyone has his warts.
July 31, 2026 at 4:05 pm #314692With the record the Cards have they should be listening on offers for any player. Romero, May, and Stanek deals make sense. Get something for them. May could get a qualifying offer, but the trouble is he might accept it.
July 31, 2026 at 4:17 pm #314693Do NOT Trade Crooks.
July 31, 2026 at 5:29 pm #314704I’m not opposed to keeping May for a qualifying offer. That gives the team another year of a good starting pitcher and lets people like Doyle develop more. I would like to move on from Liberatore, at this point. He doesn’t appear to be a quality starting pitcher.
July 31, 2026 at 6:00 pm #314705Forsch, I’m not necessarily against keeping May, because I think his stuff is worth $20 mill, but his results are not. The possibilities are 1) He accepts the QO 2) he declines the offer and signs for $50 mill plus, (the best outcome for us), or 3) he declines the offer and signs for under $50 mill. The latter is the worst for us, as I’d love to get a post first round draft pick. For if Wetherholt wins rookie of the year we get another post first round pick. That nets us 3 picks out of the first 35 picks possibly. And they may still get competitive balance selections if that is in the new contract.
July 31, 2026 at 6:41 pm #314706The Rumors are rampant!
Astros interested in Nooooooot! They do have an interesting 3rd base prospect. Not much else. He does fit into the Astros payroll wheelhouse.
July 31, 2026 at 7:25 pm #314716More info.
The Astros are interested in trading for Lars Nootbaar, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic
However, one source described to him that the #STLCards’ ask was “astronomical”

ParticipantThis here is why i cant take cardinal management seriously. An astronomical ask for and i dont care what it said, at best an average offensive player, and thats stretching it in my opinion. Hes decent defensively but lots of guys fit that description. Crazy.
July 31, 2026 at 8:27 pm #314727I don’t consider it crazy because there is no particular need to trade him now rather than this winter. Might as well hang a hefty price tag and if there are no takers get more realistic later.
July 31, 2026 at 8:50 pm #314738I’d be interested to know what the Astros considered astronomical.
I wouldn’t take what any team said at face value.
