This would be a pretty decent offensive lineup. Some good young talent in this organization.
1) Scott CF
2) Prieto 3B
3) Gorman 1B
4) Walker RF
5) Burleson DH
6) Saggese 2B
7) Herrera C
8) Carlson LF
9) Winn SSAll good except Prieto at 3B. I don’t believe he has enough power for that corner infield position. Only 21 home runs in 1,034 minor league plate appearances. Only 17 home runs in 1,178 Cuban plate appearances.
The point of that lineup with the young offensive talent. If this team is still struggling by mid season. Maybe it would be time to trade some of the veteran position players for needed starting pitching.
So, flip Saggese to 3B and Prieto to 2B. Saggese is more likely to have the desired corner infield power. Prieto would likely hit plenty good for a 2B.
I’m not going to write 5 paragraphs full of stats and metrics. I don’t need them to see whether a guy can play ball or not. Burleson has a good natural swing. That combined with the fact he bats left handed could buy him some at bats. But the guy doesn’t ever belong on a baseball field unless he’s running the bases. If he’s in left field with Walker in right field, DeWitt should be eating the remainder of Marmols contract.
If one word could be used to illustrate or depict the nature of baseball it would be profound…Or better yet…Yogi.
Burleson in left field should be an emergency measure only. Cards starting pitching does not have an abundance of swing and miss stuff.

Yes, but hopefully it will not last too long and the hole will not be too deep. I am not sure how good our infield defense is going to be, and that will last all year.

Who knows if he can hit? As a 1B or DH he’ll need to do more offensively than he has to date in MLB action to be viable.

Unfortunately a player doesn’t get to order up an opportunity custom made to improve his chances. He has to take what he gets and make something of it. Burleson has had 400 PAs and OPSed .670. He is very fortunate to be getting another shot, and he cannot expect it to be custom built. Good luck to him.
bccran, not the way he’s hitting. Do you have better professional baseball credentials than Ricky Horton? Horton is very high on Burleson as an MLB hitter. As referenced in an earlier post.

Matt Carpenter will eat into Alec Burleson’s PA at DH. He’s earned it. I am not Ricky Horton, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express.
