I went ahead and started a separate LHH OF thread. Those who want to keep talking Harper specifically can do it here.
December 6, 2018 at 11:05 am #76271Goold is not snuffing out the flame as Jen L did yesterday.
#STLCards offseason priorities now shift to improving their bullpen and adding a left-handed bench player. They still have substantial financial flexibility, but I'm told Bryce Harper is not a target.
— Jenifer Langosch (@LangoschMLB) December 5, 2018
From @dgoold on @TMASTL: The #STLCards got the guy they wanted this week and did so at 14.5 million. This allows them to be more aggressive with the LH reliever. But, to speak on declaratives that they're out on #BryceHarper, that is premature.

ParticipantOn a day that the Cardinals made a really strong acquisition, one that many doubted they would pull off, so many people are still upset.
2017- Fowler (5 years)
2018- Ozuna (2 years)
2019- Goldschmidt (1 year)That’s why.
I love Goldschmidt…. but not for a 1 year rental.
December 6, 2018 at 11:20 am #76278So you are saying you wanted another Fowler deal? 😉
December 6, 2018 at 11:30 am #76291
stlcard25ParticipantIt seems that some just don’t or won’t acknowledge the realities of the market today. Like they would expect we could get Francisco Lindor for the same package of prospects you’d trade for one year of Goldschmidt.
Reminds me of the folks who scolded the front office for trading for Ozuna last year rather than Yelich…who cares if he wasn’t available then and it would have cost us Flaherty and probably Hudson, Hicks or O’Neill, maybe multiple of them.
December 6, 2018 at 12:56 pm #76306I don’t know how anyone could be upset by this deal. The biggest piece we gave up was the Draft Pick.
I am amused, though, that Harper will probably make more money in 2019 than the entire Tampa Bay Rays team combined.

That’s so mean, Brian. Reminds me of this.

ParticipantThis is one of the biggest and most exciting trades in modern Cardinal history. Why not savor it for a few days?
December 6, 2018 at 3:50 pm #76325I totally agree with you, cranny. I’ve been feeling giddy for the past 24 hours.
December 6, 2018 at 3:52 pm #76326I concur. Goldschmidt is the best player we have had on our team since the day Albert left yet you would never know it by listening to some.
December 6, 2018 at 4:10 pm #76329NJ315
ParticipantWe had Albert in his prime. We got Goldy after his prime years. I am not saying he is going to turn into Albert after age 31 but thinking that he not going to decline as he gets older makes no sense. I hope he has an awesome 2019 and at age 32 goes to some other team. A good 2019 will mean between 5 or 6 years at 30 per. 32 to 36 or even 37. You are allowed to think Goldy is the best player we have had since forever but you cannot question how feel about this trade. If is not about what we gave up I am really happy for Kelly he deserved better from Molina. If he is here for 1 yr and we win the WS I will be surprised but ecstatic. If we don’t I hope we don’t re-sign him. I am really getting tired of the bashing of people who do not like this trade. You do good for you. We need other things and Goldy is a start but no the one I wanted. We could use a lefty in the rotation and bonafide #1 starter. We don’t have a closer or a reliable lefty reliever. We do not have a lefty bat of the bench. I will reserve my judgement until they set the 2019 roster to judge the FO moves. But Goldy is a short term move. They did not want to put all the eggs in the Harper basket got it. But they turned around and put all their eggs in the 2019 basket. After 2019 we will see if it was a good gamble.
December 6, 2018 at 4:52 pm #76334Thankfully by acquiring Goldy we still have payroll space to address the concerns you listed. If we had signed Harper the money might not be there.
Goldy finished 6th in MVP voting last year. If he isn’t still in his prime he must be close.
The Cardinals will potentially have big money coming off the books after 2019. There will be plenty of resources to field a highly competitive team in 2020 and beyond.
December 6, 2018 at 4:56 pm #76335No one is denying that Goldschmidt is a very good player. He should help immensely but only for one year. Once he turned down an extension the Cardinals should have walked away. He was acquired to do one thing…sell season tickets.
December 6, 2018 at 6:02 pm #76339NJ315
ParticipantExactly nobody is denying how good Goldy is. But that’s not the point. The point is they put all their eggs in the 2019 basket. It is 2019 or bust. I will rooting hard for 2019 to translate into a WS win. Short of that is a bust.
December 6, 2018 at 6:10 pm #76340
stlcard25ParticipantThat’s such an extreme view to take. The fact remains that they traded spare parts for a cheap year of one of the best players in baseball. Short of a missed year due to injury or terrible slump, I personally can’t call that a bust. It’s a little higher octane version of the Ozuna trade, to me.
To each their own, I suppose.
December 6, 2018 at 6:13 pm #76341NJ315
ParticipantWhy extreme? If he leaves after 2019 you only had one of the best players in baseball for one year. He can get a 10 yr contract as an elite player. He is better than Cano and he got 10 yrs at age 32. Pujols got 10 yrs. Why not Goldy? He gave a huge discount to Arizona. I don’t think he is going to be in the mood to give another especially on his last contract.
December 6, 2018 at 6:31 pm #76343
stlcard25ParticipantThe idea that only a World Series win could save this trade from being a bust seems on the edge of an extreme view, at the very least.
Not to mention, it leaves out a ton of other factors. What if Goldy wins the MVP but the starting pitching falters in the playoffs? What if they resign him and he pulls a Beltre and holds his value very well? Suppose he walks and they use the money to sign Arenado? There are just so many variables.
Besides that, the pieces given up were pretty much spare parts. That alone makes it very hard to think of as a bust. It’d be like you and I swapping DVDs and you give me three seasons of Two and a Half Men that you haven’t watched in several years, while I give you season 2 of The Office. Sure, maybe you only got one year, but *you* won’t regret the deal. ?
December 6, 2018 at 6:49 pm #76344Twitter wisdom… because the Cardinals only have to bid against themselves for Harper, they can pay possum… Brilliant strategy! I hope Boras doesn’t get the word and spoil everything by taking offers from other teams.
Exactly! #STLCards https://t.co/YesgP6sJfA

Is three years of Two and a Half Men worth the same as 7 1/2 years of one man? Like say, The Prisoner? (One man, but very high EAR — Entertainment Above Replacement.)
I did like your analogy, Mr. Lankford. Very well done.

jj-cf-stlParticipantDoes this site have the ignore feature?
December 6, 2018 at 9:23 pm #76355No, sorry. At least I have never found such a setting.
December 7, 2018 at 11:37 am #76449For those doomsdayers freaking out over the Goldy trade I think Ben Frederickson of the P-D summed it up well today:
If you want to worry, worry about how president of baseball operations John Mozeliak and general manager Michael Girsch will build on the momentum of a trade that turned replaceable depth into a middle-of-the-order mauler who happens to feast on National League Central pitchers as if they are crab legs at an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Worry that a front office that knocked a trade out of the park might not find as much success when it comes to luring and securing free-agent fixes for a bullpen that badly needs effective (and expensive) answers.
Worry that Bryce Harper, who seems headed for a staggering contract the Cardinals likely have decreased incentive in offering now that Goldschmidt is on board, winds up in the National League.
Worry that the money probably not spent on Harper won’t be used aggressively enough elsewhere.
But please, for the sake of your own sanity, don’t waste your energy feeling anxiety about seasons not named 2019.
December 7, 2018 at 12:32 pm #76454NJ315
ParticipantI am not freaking out at all. I think Goldy is a terrific player. I just don’t like the trade. I think we are allowed to our opinion. I don’t worry at all I just don’t want sign Goldy an extension. If this is a one year and done I can live with the trade.
December 7, 2018 at 2:17 pm #76460There’s word Harper may not be enamored of the city of brotherly love. But does that really even matter? @fancred @JennyDell_ https://t.co/2O9nnbhNGj

stlcard25ParticipantAs he shouldn’t be. It’s the armpit of an otherwise beautiful state. Fun place to visit, but not to live. It would be great if we could cede it to New Jersey or Delaware.
