I really hope he just hangs ’em up. He was never anything close to the player he was for StL in Cali.

They paid him for everything he did as a Cardinal.

Hell, how many times did they even make the post-season while he was there?

Yeah, I agree no way they should bring him back. Just not a fit at all, but as BW said it doesn’t diminish his spectacular career as a Cardinal.

One time, 2014 and it was a three game sweep at the hand of the Royals.

Albert Pujols was a terrific player and a wonderful asset for the Cardinals. He chose to leave St. Louis. Let him stay gone.

The Pujols feel-good-farewell moment for the Cards already happened when he hit his last HR in Busch a couple years ago. The relationship became mercenarily tinted when he left. No reason to pretend otherwise now. He can’t help the Cards win, but he might help pad their wallets. We’ll see what their priorities are.

This was really interesting. In today’s pregame, the media questions were done, but Nolan Arenado said he had something else to say…

“Albert Pujols, I love you man. You’re one of the greatest to play this game and I hope you get to go out the right way. I am a huge fan. I hope you hear this one day because you’re my favorite player.”

It would be a terrific story to see Albert come back to the Cardinals, and help them win a pennant.

But the only way that could even have a chance to play out would be if the NL had the DH this year. Given the construction of our roster, and the fact that Albert could only be a DH at this point barring a long-term injury to Goldy or Carpenter, there is no place for him on the roster.

I think some club will give him a shot to help them as a DH. Maybe LaRussa will want him in Chicago. If he does go somewhere I hope he can recapture some of the skills he once had and have a nice finish to his career.

It could be the Albert has taken his last AB as a major leaguer. Great player, solid character, Cardinal legend, future first ballot Hall of Famer.

The Angels announcers had their GM in the booth last night. I think his name is Perry Minisian, or something like that. He said it was all handled professionally, nobody was upset or mad at anybody, and when the meeting broke up there were handshakes and hugs all around.

I was glad to hear that. But the announcers also said that Albert still wants to play, and feels like he can contribute.

It may have been professional but from what I’ve read it wasn’t all nice. Apparently pujols was mad he was being benched against a pitcher hed had success against before. So he probably said something maddon, maddon didn’t like it and basically said it’s him or me or something like that and team supported maddon which is probably the right thing even though I don’t care for maddon and would have been happy to see him go. I don’t know how financials.work. I know the angels still have to pay his salary for this year if he doesn’t play. But does a team take over that if he say came to the Cardinals. That I don’t know. If a team has to take on the salary, I don’t see a team doing that. Too bad we couldn’t just swap him and carpenter. It would cost us a little more cause he s making more than carpenter, but I think the atmosphere and energy created would be worth it. Just my thought. Might increase attendance and heck he’s hitting 198, that’s 92 higher than carpenter.

That is not what was reported, willie. The recaps I read indicate the benching decision came from the front office, not Maddon.

Oh sorry Brian,I figured it was a coaches decision. I didn’t read where it came down, just assumed I guess. I know this, if I was hired looking to be hired as a manager, all playing decisions are going to be made by me. If the general manager or whoever wants to trade a player, release him, or whatever, that’s their right but if I don’t get to fill out the lineup the way I want based on available players, then I’m out.

The FO dictating lineups, etc. should only work in the minor leagues when teams are wanting to see how their prospects do. I agree 100% with Willie.

On another note the Venn diagram of the people who decried the use of a DH in the NL and the people who want Pujols to come back to the Cards is a circle.

It was very odd if in fact the front office made the call to pull him from the lineup, but Albert is not just any player. You can bet every step of the process was cleared with owner Arte Moreno. The front office there is new.

Maybe Merlot Joe’s ego is bruised by what happened, but I cannot believe his overwhelming feeling is not of relief that he doesn’t have to keep playing a player at this level of decline. Albert hasn’t even been an MLB-average hitter (in OPS+) since 2016. This isn’t a slump.

The Angels are in last place. They have younger players to play.

The angels not being good doesn’t have anything to do with pujols in my opinion. We have carpenter but yet still manage to be respectable. I hadn’t really paid a lot of attention but pujols numbers through 2017 were actually pretty good though since he has been pretty bad. I think that platner stuff really did him in though he is getting pretty old now.

Reality check. A manager is not going to bench a guy making $30M without his boss telling him to. And his boss isn’t going to tell him to unless his boss tells him to.

I don’t think what a player makes should dictate whether a player plays or not far as a individual game. Long term yea, it may come down to management but not one game.

Hey guys, first time poster/long time lurker here. Thought I’d take a shot at answering willie’s above question about the financials.

After being DFA’d, he goes on waivers for 7 days, during which time the Angels will try to trade him (unlikely) or hope somebody claims him and takes on the remainder of his contract (won’t happen). After 7 days he will most likely be released and the Angels will be responsible for the remainder of his contract no matter what he does. He then will be a free agent, and can sign with any team that wants him for a prorated amount of the league minimum, if I’m not mistaken, for the rest of the season.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but that is my understanding of the DFA procedure.

Correct. After he is released his next team, if there is one, will only pay the prorated portion of the league minimum. The Angels are on the hook for the rest. So if another team signed him in a week they would owe him about $500k.

So if another team signed him in a week they would owe him about $500k.

Something I haven’t thought about before…if a team picks him up off waivers or as a free agent, is that team on the hook for the full rest-of-season minimum salary (like you said around 500K)? What if a team signs him, but then releases him in a month? Would they owe the full 500K, or a month’s worth of minimum, which would be around 100K, and the Angels be back on the hook for the rest? Trivial point for us, but just curious.

    Welcome, Bones. Solid first post.

I don’t know for sure the answer to Euro’s question, but my guess it is the latter.

Thanks bones and Brian. Pretty much guarantees nobody is picking him up the first week. At the money afterwards he could be worth it financially for someone. I think financially it would be worth it for Cardinals if they released carpenter but I don’t see them doing it..

Well apparently pujols asked to be released. I guess you can take that two ways. You can say he wasn’t really being a team player by accepting a mainly bench role or you can applaud him for believing that he can still play everyday and doesn’t want to sit on the bench. I’m going with the latter.
