I have nothing against Schlesener, but if he was being pushed by the organization, why was he passed over for Instructional Camp yet be a candidate to skip over Peoria entirely after clearly still having major control issues at State College? It does not add up for me.
January 9, 2019 at 2:45 pm #79586The only place I’ve seen Schlesener talked about in regards to being a serious prospect is VEB. No other prospect rankings have him ranked.

ParticipantGentlemen…. I read a lot of Cardinal stuff in different places. I can remember seeing some good things about Schlesener, I just can’t remember where but the info stuck with me.
January 10, 2019 at 10:55 am #79653Missouri products draw more attention from some.

ParticipantThis Q comes from the Kyle Fraser Q&A from the BA 2019 prospects ranking thread:
Paul Ivice (Jensen Beach, Florida): At which position is the Cardinals minor-league system weakest, either in depth or strength of better prospects?
Kyle Glaser: They are very, very weak in the middle infield. With the trade of Andy Young, no one outside of Tommy Edman is really even considered more than an up-and-down guy at either 2B or SS.
——————————————————————————————There was some discussion concerning the organization’s not having any solid middle infield prospects on one of the other topics. I’ve been saying for for more than 6 months that the depth in that area is paper thin as Glaser points out.
January 13, 2019 at 11:36 am #79897…as have I throughout the top 50 and follow on analysis articles. Currently, I am digging through the BaseballHQ player and organization rankings and the same points are coming up.
Having said that, the level of immediate concern should have an inverse relationship to the level of confidence in Wong and DeJong for the next few years. Wong remains under team control for three more years and DeJong seven. A lot can change in three years.
For example, until 2018, the Cardinals had no third base prospects for years. But between Matt Carpenter and Jedd Gyorko acquired in trade, they’ve gotten by.

ParticipantCardinals.com has selected the best defensive prospect for each team. For us they selected Delvin Perez. There’s a feather he can put in his cap. Congrats Delvin.
January 19, 2019 at 12:51 pm #80282Way to go Delvin!
Now go eat a cheeseburger or two.
January 19, 2019 at 2:25 pm #80284Not rocket science, but it appears that Peoria and Memphis should be very good, while Springfield and Palm Beach may not be as good. At least Palm Beach should see the graduates from a a young Peoria team that ought to be loaded with young talent. I would like to see Nunez do well this spring, and take Gorman’s place when he hopefully gets promoted.

ParticipantSitting here in January, Springfield will get some good ballplayers with a good outfield, some decent starters. The bullpen may not be too good… but bp pitchers sometimes land in unexpected places. The middle infield might be thin and shaky. How well our guys are against the rest of the league is another question.
I’ll tell you one thing, where the organization places some prospects is way different than what you or I see. Its always interesting to see what Brian comes up with.

ParticipantDerrick Goold came out with something he calls his Bird Land 7 or BL-7. His ratings exclude any prospect that has played for the MLB Cards. I’m adding what the TCN’s list would look like with the same qualifications: Pretty much the same players… it helps our cred… and his.
Goold TCN
#1 Gorman…… Gorman
#2 Montero….. Montero
#3 Nunez……. Knizner
#4 Thomas…… Helsley
#5 Cabrera….. Carlson
#6 Knizner….. Thomas
#7 Helsley….. NunezOn the Rise…. TCN next 5
Urias………. Cabrera
Carlson…….. Arozarena
Arozarena…… Roberts
Capel………. Baker
Roberts…….. KruczynskiJanuary 25, 2019 at 11:40 am #80652FWIW, even though it can lead to the need to make mid-course adjustments due to trades, one big reason I like to get our list out early is to avoid suggestions we were influenced by others. I’d rather be doing any influencing. 😉
Specifically to Derrick, he adopted our approach of running a fan-based prospect list via his blog for a few years, but that fell by the wayside. I suspect he is spread very thinly. The P-D typically brings in a summer intern and assigns him/her to the minor leagues, but most of the output as far as I can tell is a daily games recap like we run from every morning from March into September.
January 31, 2019 at 10:05 am #80973Not in the headline but this article says Conner Capel suffered a skull fracture in an off season bar fight.

January 31, 2019 at 10:35 am #80977Interesting. Capel was active in instructional camp and I noticed nothing out of the ordinary with him. He took BP and participated in drills like everyone else.
January 31, 2019 at 10:56 am #8097914NyquisT
ParticipantMaybe he hooked up with the wrong crowd. He needs to be more selective and show better life choices. Looking like a regular on the “Sons of Anarchy” should not be an objective.
Fangraphs had him at #13 on 11/14/18, TCN placed him at #31. A neurologist for 5 years? C’mon Connor time to show your stuff on the ball field.
January 31, 2019 at 11:11 pm #81011I am curious how many DSL players from 2018 will play in the States in 2019? I count 12 that might be ready.
Soto, INF
Soto, P
Puello
De Los Santos
Nunez
Selmo
Cruz
Mendoza
Ventura
Jiminez
Moreno
LongaDepending on their spring, they could play in the GCL or Johnson City.

ParticipantNearly everyone if not all of the ’18 GCL team will be gone. Filling that roster will depend on how the draft goes. There are 17 DSL signees for ’19. With the two DR teams it becomes a numbers game. Also, the number of June ’19 draftees that sign fits into this equation. Let’s hope all twelve of the ones mentioned are ready for the stateside teams.
February 1, 2019 at 10:42 am #81028I guess Carlos Soler got a taste of the GCL last year. I find this kid to be intriguing. It sounds like he needs to bulk up a bit though.
February 1, 2019 at 11:00 am #8103714NyquisT
ParticipantThe DSL kids are still getting taller and will bulk up with all the burgers they’ll be eating in FLA.
I’ve been keeping an eye on Soler (19y.o. 6’2″ 163.)also. Eat a sandwich Carlos.
February 1, 2019 at 11:18 am #81046One thing for sure, with the second DSL team, the competition for jobs above is going to get tighter. Some guys may not be allowed to hang around in short-season ball so long. It will take until late June for the entire picture to be clear. Maybe then I can do some analysis about the changes in promotion dynamics.
February 1, 2019 at 11:22 am #81048I saw Soler for the first time in instructs. My guess is that he was 163 when signed, but not now. Looks like he is putting his work in.
February 1, 2019 at 11:37 am #81055With sheer numbers in the DSL in 2018, I am beginning to think quantity over quality in their signings. Granted some may 4-5 yers, but their international spending splurge has yet to bear any elite players. Oviedos second half does give some hope.
February 1, 2019 at 11:39 am #81056The Cards are not the only organization to have multiple teams. Last year’s DSL consisted of 44 teams.
However, they have nine minor league teams in total where a number of others have only seven or eight. To the point made earlier, increased expense in player development.
February 1, 2019 at 11:39 am #81057It was a shame that Ronnie Williams seemed to be putting things together before injury. Maybe he can recover and be a power bullpen guy at Springfield/Memphis this year?
