stlcard… with all due respect, I think that leaving it as a tie may be more equitable than when someone here votes. Comments?
I agree. I believe you should leave it as a T-5 (if a tie does happen). Then skip the 6th round of voting and move to voting for 7th.
Telling it like it is the two pitching prospects that improved the most during the season were Mautz and BDavis.
Skipping rounds throws off the schedule listed in the early post (which cannot be edited by me) and probably creates more confusion than just separating the tie via a tiebreaker. Hopefully we won’t end up in a tie. #5 is the vote that is closest for me so far as I have both Baez and Bernal with the same FV, ceiling and risk.
Not knowing which catcher prospect(s) go in trade this winter leaves me to use this one for a player that will most likely be in the system longer.
#5 Jesus Baez 3B
Baez is very young at 20 years old and he has plus power at a premium position and one of need after the impending departure of Arenado. Best yet he ain’t a pitcher or C which seems to be what the Cardinals have the most of and seem likely to stick at 3B.
If it would throw off the voting schedule, just allow the voting period of the 6th and 7th to vote for just the 7th. Then call the tie for the 5th. The alternative is to make the tiebreaker whoever has the most votes in the previous round.
In later rounds, we always go with “most votes earliest,” as in the guy with the most votes at 31 edges the guy with more votes at 32 or 33 when voting for 3. In this case, Josh Baez got votes as early as 3rd.
I think we just stay consistent as voting in the past. Odds are whoever loses out of Baez/Bernal for 5, will be our vote at 6 anyway. I know it will be mine. To me, the top 6 or 7 have always been pretty clear. It’s after that where we may see a lot of tangents. I’d love to get this section done quickly and move on too, but it is what it is.
I agree that we should proceed with the pre-determined rules.
But I don’t assume who is going to be voted in what slot. That is why each person has a vote.
I also agree that we should use the tie-breaker method we have used in the past. Hopefully, it works itself out and we don’t have to use that method!
Maybe when we have a tie, just place them in alphabetical order for the next two slots and carry on. In the case here, Baez just barely nips Bernal for the #5 choice, with Bernal occupying #6. Or another idea would be the younger of the two prospects is placed first, which sounds simplistic, but makes total sense.

I have Henderson just ahead of the catchers based mostly on potential impact. I see both Crooks and Bernal as backups on a strong team or marginal starters on a weak team. Neither will be a difference maker with the bat. Of course, there is risk with a AA starter.
6. Bernal
I had Bernal in a tie with Jo Baez here and just ahead of Crooks. Bernal has a chance to be an impactful bat combined with being a good defensive catcher. Both Crooks and Bernal are good defensively. Maybe slight edge to Crooks. Both are good at throwing out runners. The main difference is Bernal has a shot at being a 4/5/6 hitter in the lineup whereas Crooks doesn’t and is far more likely a 7/8/9 hitter.
Leonardo Bernal at #6 for me as well. He wore down a little as the season went on, but he’s shown the ability to be an above average bat at a young age, and he has some parts of the defensive game down as well. Like Jnevel, I have him just a notch ahead of Crooks on the possibility that he’s a solid defender with an above average bat.

I think Bernal is a fringe top 100 guy. He has a rough 2nd half of the year, but he was very young for the level and reports are he is slightly above with the glove. Fangraphs actually has him up to the #40 prospect in baseball overall. I think Bernal’s bat has a chance like more like a #5/6 which lines up closely with Jnevels assessment as well but there is risk there.
