I get the consistency point and I agree with you, but as you said, it would be better to abolish it entirely as the gimmick it is.

I think the panic was so severe in that moment he was not aware there was even such a thing as numbers or outs.

I just happened to turn on the LAD/PHI game when I saw it was tied in the 11th and that sparked my curiousity. Kerkering was ion the mound for the Phils and was in trouble. His biggest mistake was thinking that there was 1 out instead of 2 or maybe it was just panic and he was looking to start a 1-2-3 DP, but that catastrophic mistake is in the Bruckner category. So much on the line in this one. Everyone who saw the fiasco has to feel bad for the guy. This will be his career legacy. tsk tsk.
Yeah, E. Hernandez was the only batter Kerkering faced prior to the catastrophic E-1. He was essentially IBB’ed with 1B open after defensive indifference allowed Muncy to move up to 2B. The result was a bases jammed force out at any base situation. Although it creates the genuine possibility of a game ending run scoring on a walk-off BB, it’s my view that a force at any base takes a bit of pressure off of the D. It’s entirely possible that in some strange manner the BB with 1B open inexplicably caused Kerkering to be lulled into a state of mind in which he instinctively thought there was only 1 out and that either a GIDP or a force out at HP were the best options to prevent the winning run from scoring. In any case, Kerkering, and everyone else, has to have the precise number of outs indelibly burned onto his brain in that situation. I feel bad for him, but it was an easy inning ending out at 1B.

This is a very good game. Might go into extra innings.
I think both managers pulled their starters to soon. But I’m guessing the computer wonks crunching the data would disagree. And that’s what seems to influence these types of decisions these days.
