My favorite Lynn anecdote:
Lance Lynn on getting a come-backer to the head: “I thought it should’ve been caught. Where’s Kolten at on the ricochet?”
Nobody knows to what extent he was joking around. Some say not at all. I wouldn’t suggest anybody cost Lance due to sluggish play or not paying attention. And I agree, jj, Marmol could run afoul of Lance.

jj-cf-stlParticipantMarmol and staff should need permission from the other 4 SP’s, to pull the SP’r. This rotation could police itself.
December 11, 2023 at 7:20 am #239575Maybe a couple of grizzly veterans like Lynn and Gibson are just what Oli needs to set the record straight so that he can continue to develop as a big league manager.
December 11, 2023 at 7:26 am #239576
jj-cf-stlParticipantMaybe so. We know the rotation brings 1200 GS of experience. If it’s the scripted printout vs experienced opinions, I’m in the experience knows best camp, when it comes to in-game decisions 🙂

jj-cf-stlParticipantWho has the Dave Duncan role for 2024? I admit I’ve lost track.

jj-cf-stlParticipantGibson and Lynn were rotation members on the 2020 Texas Rangers.
John King debuted that Sept.December 12, 2023 at 4:44 pm #239693Jim Bowden (not the most informed but a former GM) in the Athletic predicts that:
Yamamoto will get a contract of 9 years $304 million
Montgomery will get 6 years $167 million
Snell will get 6 years $162 million
Wacha will get 2 years $28 million
Giolito will get 1 year $15 million
Seth Lugo will get 2 years $24 millionMay not be accurate in the end, but it’s at least a ballpark
December 12, 2023 at 5:00 pm #239694Lugo got 3/45
December 12, 2023 at 6:22 pm #239696I can’t imagine the deferral monkey business Mo would try to write in those contracts. Even if we found one who wanted to sign with us, they could never finish writing the agreement before spring.
December 18, 2023 at 2:22 pm #240005I don’t really see the Cardinals signing or trading for any more A or B list starters so I might take a flyer on Frankie Montas if he can pass a physical in an incentive laden deal.
It would definitely be a risk, but there could be some upside possibilities if it is the right price
December 18, 2023 at 6:12 pm #240008
jj-cf-stlParticipantMo could sign relievers today, anytime. I like to think he is looking to add quality IP to the staff, which may require taking on significant salary, that he still has funds for. Whether he finds that deal is the unknown.

By Nate Hagerty | Last updated 12/20/23The Cardinals are listed among the favorites to sign left-hander Jordan Montgomery according to the oddsmakers at BetOnline. St. Louis enters with +300 odds (25%) to reunite with the reigning World Series champion, who is set for a sizeable payday.
Those odds may change, but for now there is some reason to hope.
December 21, 2023 at 9:00 am #240114Very interesting. I wonder what they base that on. I also wonder if they have a corresponding bet for the “under”. That’s where my money would be… 😉
December 22, 2023 at 5:30 am #240158It is being reported that Yamamoto has signed with the Dodgers … 12 years $325M. What an off-season for the Dodgers and they are probably not done making moves.
December 22, 2023 at 5:46 am #240159
stlcard25ParticipantWaters that it may take the Cards another 15+ years to play in (that size of deal, they’d likely never go 12 yrs)…the Dodgers are on another level. It guarantees nothing except their fans will have a whole lot more fun than ours until at least October of next year.

jj-cf-stlParticipantYamamoto
Glasnow
Buehler
MillerThere’s a lot of “hope” going on there. They need an innings eater. A Giolito type.
December 22, 2023 at 9:19 am #240167Yep, the Dodgers are taking it to a new level this offseason. The homegrown % of their 40 man roster is still higher than the Cardinals but of course the Cards would never take this kind of plunge into free agency and frankly this is the first time in recent memory that the Dodgers have taken on two free agent contracts of this size at the same time.
My take is that the Dodger brass has finally come to the conclusion that the philosophy of making the playoffs and hoping to make a run isn’t cutting it. They have only one championship in the last 35 years and that has to grate on them. They now seem intent on building a super team with the intent of taking the randomness out of the playoffs. Of course we all know that the playoff randomness will still exist but they are improving their odds of running the gauntlet.
And yes this is very un-Cardinal like because we all know the Cardinals will never truly “go for it”, however you want to define it. Our team is very happy with just trying to squeak into the playoffs and hoping for the best. That isn’t going to change.
December 22, 2023 at 1:12 pm #240183Using % of the 40-man roster as a comparison is not all that interesting to me as every player is considered equal, one of 40. We know the 40 are far from the same as each other.
What is far more relevant and telling is to compare % of the PAYROLL and total dollars spent on insiders vs. outsiders. I am betting when the values of the 40 players are considered, any edge the Cards might have had over the Dodgers disappears.
If I heard correctly, the Dodgers have committed over $1.5 billion to five players, none of whom are homegrown. That amount is staggering and unprecedented.
December 22, 2023 at 2:42 pm #240184I am not sure the best way to define what a homegrown organization looks like or doesn’t look like. I am guessing that in most years the Dodgers have drafted behind the Cardinals, so in theory, signing the Dodger players should be cheaper at the initial signing. That is not counting international signings though which the Dodgers have been known for.
Yes this offseason they have mude huge financial investments, even for their standards. As I mentioned it feels to me that they have decided to finally use all of their financial muscle to win a world series instead of just winning a division. Time will tell if they have invested wisely.
December 22, 2023 at 3:19 pm #240186My guess Yamamoto will be pretty good from what I saw in the WBC but 12 years is a deal that a small or mid mid market team could never do.…my guess is they are going to do some type of a tv deal in Japan with him and Ohtani, but $325 million plus the additional $50 million posting fee could be interesting if things don’t go to plan with his production….12 years is a long time for a pitcher
December 22, 2023 at 3:35 pm #240187Yam could blow out his arm in March. Ohtani can DH if nothing else. I’m on board with the Japanese TV idea, and the smart has has Noot heading to LA in 2028.
December 24, 2023 at 5:28 pm #240307The Cardinals trade package equivalency to what the White Sox are asking of the Reds for Dylan Cease would appear to be Tink Hence. Tekoh Roby, Alec Burleson, and Luken Baker. I think I would do it.
All four prospects were 1st or 2nd round picks of the Reds or Mariners. I just went with our top two pitchers and top two hitters.December 24, 2023 at 7:32 pm #240311I would not hesitate to give up Roby, Burleson and Baker, but not Hence. It would be a big risk moving him for two years of Cease. Unfortunatly, Hence is the one they would insist upon, and they would have no use for two 1B/DHs, if they would even want one.

ParticipantThat Cease deal, from the Cardinals perspective wouldnt include guys like Burleson or Baker
Value-wise:
Phillips is basically Hence and Lowder is equivalent to Roby. That’s accurate. But since Arroyo is a MI, Saggese is a good comp. Also Petty is probably close to Liberatore.
So Hence, Roby, Liberatore, and Saggese.
This is probably why no one is meeting the White Sox asking price.
