ParticipantBased on grays numbers he was better than his record by a lot. I can’t remember the record the guy had for san Francisco the year waino won 20 but it wasn’t much better than 500 if it even was and Felix Hernandez finished seasons with records like that and he was definitely cy young worthy every year he was healthy.
November 28, 2023 at 6:49 pm #238488I am very happy most of the people here are very happy with the 3 new pitchers. I am not I like Gray but not the other two. Time will tell. I am not thrilled but you have made it abundantly clear I am not only in the minority but also unable to understand how much Lynn and Gibson bring.
November 28, 2023 at 7:06 pm #2384912024 cardinals pitching rotation as it is now makes around $10 million more than the 2023 Rotation going by Spotrac
November 28, 2023 at 7:17 pm #238492Good decisions by the FO.
November 28, 2023 at 7:31 pm #238495One of these days Manfred is going to come up with a new rule that places make believe money at 2B along with a make believe baserunner during extras…The team that wins the game will be the team with the most make believe money. If this new rule proves to procure more young fans to the game of baseball, the same concept will eventually be applied to 5 man pitching rotations. It could really speed up the game.
November 28, 2023 at 7:40 pm #238496I’ve always been a fan of cool sounding baseball names and I have to acknowledge that I like the name, “Sonny Gray.” It sounds good for a baseball player. Especially a pitcher. But I’ve never seen Sonny Gray work. Has anyone else? And if so, is he pretty good? In any event, I can just hear my all time favorite announcer Harry Caray…”He checks on the runner at first…He winds and fires…Heeee struck him out! And another complete game shutout for the great Sonny Gray…Holy cow!”
November 28, 2023 at 8:58 pm #238501These off-season moves remind a bit of the 1999-2000 off-season. Jocketty added Kile, Hentgen and Benes to beef up the rotation. It paid dividends in 2000. Hoping we can the same about these moves for the 2024 season.
November 28, 2023 at 9:07 pm #238503Every time I hear the name Sonny it reminds me of a guy at the office named Sonny. When he went to the mens room you ran the other way. One day he cleared out one side of the building. And it wasn’t a small building either.
Seeing Sonny walk down the hallway with a newspaper rolled up in his hand was the absolute scariest site in our building……

ParticipantAs Marilyn points out something that has been said here one hundred times in the recent days.
The Cardinals needs a #1 starter and they don’t have one.
Assuming that this mystery #1 comes to us in a trade…. really who can bring that sort of value? I have said before here and elsewhere that Arenado alone is a big chip. Who else gets thrown in will be who that trade partner is looking for, perhaps a top ranked prospect, maybe O’Neill or Matz, or Carlson or a combination of players. I think that Mozeliak wants a four or five man trade so that we get another productive p;ayer just in case our new #1 goes down. Maybe someone for the BP or an OF. Would we miss Arenado…. probably so…. but probably not if Gorman steps up an notch or two…. there is that chance.
That scenario is a very big blockbuster. We can put Gorman at third, Edman at SS and Donovan at second in that process and cross off three or four concerns with one stone.
I’m just sitting here scratching my head and wondering how the Cards can finally get their #1 as Marilyn and others propose.
November 29, 2023 at 3:00 pm #238546I don’t know if Dylan Cease is a number 1 but he is a solid number 2 and we wouldn’t have to trade Arenado to get him. I would make an initial offer of O’Neill, Burleson, Graceffo, and Thompson.
November 29, 2023 at 5:24 pm #238559I posted this in the Kyle Gibson thread…..
Remember, it was Gibson that gave up four (4) CONSECUTIVE homeruns to the Cardinals back in the 2022 season.

November 30, 2023 at 11:33 am #238625Please add Cease.
November 30, 2023 at 1:14 pm #238629You guys missed the best “Sonny” name of all time. That is Sonny Sixkiller, the Washington Huskies record setting QB of the early 70s. A TD-throwing QB with “Six” and “killer” in his name — how cool is that? He even wore the number 6 on his jersey. I think all that tops Sonny Bono or Sonny Drysdale or any others I can think of. Sonny Corleone was the killee, not the killer, so he definitely takes a back seat. Sonny Gray has his work cut out for him to top those.
November 30, 2023 at 1:15 pm #238630Please add Cease.
Sounds too good to be true, but the Cards could make some noise if they do.
November 30, 2023 at 1:59 pm #238636Euro…Before reading your entire post I saw Washington and immediately thought of Redskin QB Sonny Jurgenson.
November 30, 2023 at 5:19 pm #238647Ah yes 1td, Jurgensen was also a very good Sonny. I remember him with George Allen and the Over the Hill Gang — not much before that. Speaking of Allen, he never met a draft pick he wouldn’t trade. He got fined for trading draft picks he didn’t even have, haha! How does than even happen? That’s quite a different view than how things are viewed today on the valuation of prospects and draft picks. Jurgensen also played baseball in college.
November 30, 2023 at 8:08 pm #238662Lynn and Gibson don’t have to be that good to be way better than whoever was taking the 4 and 5 turns last season. Personally, I an shocked BillMo is spending money on the #5 slot instead of using a laundry list guy. A second top of rotation guy will be huge, but it doesn’t have to happen this winter.
November 30, 2023 at 8:19 pm #238664No problem there because they are not that good.

ParticipantLots of things going on. I think MO has to get another guy that’s a one or a two. If he don’t , while I like gray, he’s not enough to take us from where we were to where MO wants to get. There will be initial excitement for gray and the team but if we are just somewhat better than last season but still well out, people will stop coming to games. With Bally probably cancelling out the tv contract after this coming season, he wants to have a good financially strong season. Better do the mojo now.
December 1, 2023 at 2:34 pm #2387041. Gray
2. Cease
3. Mikolas
4. Gibson
5. Lynn/MatzDecember 1, 2023 at 3:35 pm #238706Mo’s problem is that swingmen were pricier than Lynn and Gibson. Martinez got 2@26 and Lugo will get even more.
December 1, 2023 at 3:50 pm #238708If they acquire Cease, Matz could very well get traded. The remaining pitchers are pretty durable. I’m guessing that Mikolas laid down on us last offseason and that’s the reason for his health issues in 2023. He just wasn’t resilient. That probably won’t happen again. So it looks like it’s going to be hard for Thompson, in particular, to get innings. Thompson was pretty good in a starting role and I’d like to see him stay as starter for as long as possible. I’d like to see Liberatore spend a whole season in the pen. I think he’s got the mentality for pitching out of the pen.
December 1, 2023 at 3:53 pm #238709I think MO has to get another guy that’s a one or a two. If he don’t , while I like gray, he’s not enough to take us from where we were to where MO wants to get.
Any time between now and next season’s trade deadline will work. It might be better to wait until the deadline and do a Monty type deal for a top of rotation pitcher who is healthy then, rther than signing one now and hoping he’s still healthy by then.
