November 27, 2023 at 7:17 am #238223Rumor on MLB on XM is that the Cardinals have an agreement with Sonny Gray.
November 27, 2023 at 7:29 am #238224Replace Wacha with Gray and there is your 2024 rotation.
November 27, 2023 at 7:43 am #238225Now sign Clevinger and trade Mikolas, then sign Lugo and trade Matz

ParticipantDoes signing Gray mean losing the second-round draft pick?
November 27, 2023 at 8:01 am #238227Yes – but the Cardinals have a terrible track record with second round draft picks, so this actually helps them.
November 27, 2023 at 8:10 am #238228“The Cardinals are “expected” to finalize a deal with free agent right-hander Sonny Gray today, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The details of the contract are not currently known.”
The MLBTR blurb.

Winn and Hence were both 2nd rounders and might make up for all of them.
We’ve lost a lot of them:
2024 – lost for Gray (potentially)
2023 – lost for Contreras
2019 – lost 1 of 2 for Goldschmidt
2018 – lost 1 of 2 for Holland
2017 – lost for scandalNovember 27, 2023 at 8:31 am #238231We’ve lost a lot of them
In the 10 years from 2010-2019, we were 0-10.

In the 10 years from 2010-2019, we were 0-10.
I’m not disagreeing with you. There were many misses. But I wouldn’t say 0-10, when Carson Kelly, Luken Baker, and Oscar Mercado were 2nd rounders, unless you consider them failures. Kelly was the 1B centerpiece in the Goldschmidt trade.
Also, there were an abundance of supplemental 1st rounders in those years.
November 27, 2023 at 9:24 am #238241I don’t think losing the 2nd round pick and the $2M value that comes with it is a win when the Cardinals still need another top of the rotation starter. If they don’t get another one all of this is a huge giant waste and I will bemoan this signing all 3 years of the contract.
November 27, 2023 at 9:31 am #238242Right on BHC. Now Mo has blown Flores’s chance to draft the next Tre Fletcher. and our international signings have been our lifeline for years. Three years of Gray when he could have held out for eight years of Snell, who has already won more than 8 games twice in his young career.
November 27, 2023 at 9:36 am #238244Might as well go get Rich Hill and raise the average age of the rotation closer to 40.

MatzWow, that is one poor five-man. I would much prefer Libby and Hudson in there somewhere over just about any of those guys. Give the kids a shot!
As mentioned above, looks like Gray will be the guy. Hard to think that a guy who went 8-8 was the AL Cy Young runner-up, and is the big man on campus as far as a starting rotation. But such is the modern game.

MatzIs the ’24 5 man better than the ’23?
November 27, 2023 at 10:21 am #238254The Gray signing puts the paroll around $183M. There won’t be another major signing unless they move out a lot more payroll.
November 27, 2023 at 10:31 am #238259There may be a trade.
November 27, 2023 at 11:06 am #238266Signing an international star like Yamamoto carries financial benefits making the contract almost cost neutral.
November 27, 2023 at 11:11 am #238271Is the ’24 5 man better than the ’23?
Is Gray, Gibson, and Lynn better than Monty, Flaherty, and Waino? I would say definitely yes.
Flaherty was bad and Waino was historically bad. Gray and Monty are almost a wash but Gray is probably slightly better.

Having Gray at 34, 35, and 36 years old does not really make this a playoff caliber team, Nigel. I guess you missed the part where I said the Cards still need to add another top pitcher or it’s a waste? If you’re gonna mock my comment at least be accurate. But yes enjoy this rotation that resembles more of a polished turd and accept it as a diamond ring.
