You can’t just look at ERA, like a Neanderthal. Burly’s deep metrics might be pretty good. I think he tried snapping off an uncle charlie. Like to know the spin rate on that bad boy.
Steve Carlton was our guest at a local SABR dinner some 10 years or more ago. There was the inevitable question of the toughest hitter he faced. He said this will surprise us, but it was Ron Hunt. He said he could never get that guy out. He stood right on top of the plate and Carlton said he had a tough time pitching to him.
The game, like the season, is a disaster. About how I feared this homestand would go. Burleson pitching?? As if Ollie has not made enough of a joke of this club.
Look how Donovan is still giving it 100% out there…..very impressive……and now Chip is talking exactly about this.
The Mets trailed Milwaukee 3-2 in the last of the 9th. They had 1st and 3rd with one out and failed to score.
3-2 Brewers the final. Cards now, what, 9.5 games out, or something like that.
I keep thinking we hit the low point in the season, and we just keep going down. I still think blowing that 5-0 lead against Pittsburgh was the point of where we changed from “maybe we can still get in this thing”, to “reality bites”.
I saw 1TD and Euro reference the player in the trivia question, but did not spill the beans. For those who are interested, the answer is Nellie Fox.
Unfortunately, they could have spotted us 13 runs……and we still would have lost. 14-0 your miserable final from St. Louis.
You have to feel sorry for some of these fans. At every game there are fans who have driven vast distances to see their favorite team for the first time in their lives. There are fans at every game who saved up money and sacrificed to take themselves and maybe their kids to see their beloved team. Some of these great fans will never get another opportunity to come back to see another game. These facts need to be understood by management/managers and effectively relayed to Cardinal players. You just cannot allow yourself to get thumped in this fashion in your own ballpark.
Ollie says Wainwright will make his next start. What else can he say at the post game I guess. Nothing else of any value, mostly due to no questions that would call for an interesting answer. Its just the choir in there.
Once Burly settled in, he looked pretty similar to some of the others. Less velo, but around the plate, sometimes with a little movement.
The worst insult to the fans of this team is that absolutely nothing has been done to alter the course of this team’s plunge into oblivion. It was obvious that something drastic needed to be done a month and a half ago. Now, it’s way too late and Cardinal fans are subjected to a daily dose of a product that should have been taken off the shelf six weeks ago. Then, the salt is thoroughly rubbed into the wound with the declaration that the leadership of this ballclub has performed, “an amazing job.” It’s a mockery and an insult.
Well, at least they didn’t squander a late lead. Burly got roughed up a little, but he’s still young and needs some time to develop. Patience is the key with these young players…
Every team has a few games like this every season – I remember one game in the mid-eighties that the Cards were losing BIG to the Phillies (I think) where Whitey let Willie McGee play some shortstop, lol.
The problem is that this team in 14 games under .500 1/2 way through the season and Mo and Marmol are just Stepford wife-ing their way along. La La La La La La – everything will be fine – la la la la la la – we just need to be more consistent – la la la la la la,
They both just need to sack up and admit that the season is an unexpected disaster and that it is primarily Mo’s fault. He needs to own this.
Then they need to tell us what the plan is moving forward to get back to pre-2015 levels of baseball in StL – give the fans something to hope for because this season is shot.
It’s looking more and more like there’s a genuine possibility that this team could reach a nadir of 20 to 25 games below .500 and if that indeed turned out to be a reality, I still don’t think any of the Cardinal bosses would own it. I don’t think any of them are capable of acknowledging a dismal failure.
Another trivia item here. I wonder if Burly is the 1st guy to give up a HR as a position player on the mound, while also having hit a HR off a position player? I bet that’s why Oli sent him to the mound, to make history.
I’m pretty sure the start of our fall from Grace was letting Erica Weston go 2 years ago! We haven’t been the same since!
