He displayed his inherent ability to pull disaster out of a hat in last year’s post-season. In retrospect, that glaring display should have fully indicated to everyone who was watching that the entire fiasco was the definitive as opposed to the exception.
As I recall, Game 1 of the Phillies series included a blown save, which has turned into another Cardinal tradition. 15 blown saves this year already. At least we are tops in something.
If you watched that game, you know what happened, gscottar. The blown save was the crescendo of an elaborate symphony dedicated to failure and it was created and composed by the Redbird manager. I’d say it was his opus magnum, but since that time he’s composed an entire catalogue of similar overtures that rival the complex Wagnerian tragedy that was orchestrated last Oct. A simple BS doesn’t begin to describe or do justice to that monumental masterpiece…
Marmol has made his share of mistakes in his tenure there is no doubt. You are correct about that 1td.
I am still going to maintain that this has been a collective failure instead of one person.
The owner is complacent and risk averse.
The front office knew we didn’t have enough pitching and refused to address it. The front office also is afraid to have an experienced manager who will challenge them.
Our inexperienced manager is having to learn on the fly which is never a good situation, especially for an organization who expects to compete for championships each year. Rookie managers usually start with rebuilding teams.
Our players have absolutely laid a collective egg. The argument can be made that they aren’t receiving the proper leadership but the fact remains that these guys are highly paid professionals who are just not executing. They shouldn’t have to be held by the hand.
The only silver lining in this debacle is that perhaps it will force the the organization to realize their approach is not working and make some changes.
I don’t expect anything radical. The front office won’t be changed. The manager will probably be made the fall guy either at mid year or end of the year.
I am hoping that we use this as an opportunity and reset the roster a bit. The big money guys like Goldy, Arenado, Contreras, Mikolas, and Matz probably aren’t going anywhere but there are plenty of other guys who could be moved and we should have the highest draft pick we have had in years.
Even IF the offense picks up dramatically we still have a rotation that is not built for winning. None of them would be starting for some teams. Maybe that’s what is causing the hitters to be under-performing. IMO…there is a sense of futility in the dugout.
If Mo fires Marmol and the results stay the same (they probably will) then what does he do?
The problem is that big money was spent on some players that turned out to be flat out bad (you all know who the suspects are) and they become problematic for the manager because he is told to play them…. no matter what. Right now Contreras is a huge problem, Matz and DeJong too. We’re in trouble not just for this year but it will take time for someone with guts to straighten things out. I say this with a heavy heart.
gscottar…You’re entirely right that the failure is a collective effort. I couldn’t agree more concerning that assertion. It starts with the owner of the franchise, but he’s not going anywhere unless he cashes out on his investment, so there’s no cause in calling for his dismissal. Johnny’s circumstances are similar in the context that the owner seems to have faith in him and we all saw the presense of his influence with the sacking of Shildt, so I believe we’re also saddled with him for the time being. You already know what my view of the Redbird manager is, and if it’s possible to exert any more extreme criticism of both Billy Jr. and Johnny, in my view that criticism would be that they haven’t already shown any initiative at all in the form of sacking the field manager. Obviously the players certainly deserve to shoulder a portion of accountability and I’m convinced that their accountability centers around playing in an atmosphere of which the majority of them have no trust, faith, or simple solidarity with their field manager. These views can only lead me to conclude that the manager has to go and I came to that conclusion at least six weeks ago.
Sure seems like more than that, ZTR, but they’ve experienced several gut punch losses that were the result of squandering late inning leads. An glaring example would be a 7-5 loss to the Pirates a couple of weeks ago in which they held a 5-0 lead for 6 innings before PIT scored 6 runs in the 7th. There’s been too many squandered leads to count which is always the case for teams with horrible W/L records. They’re 7-16 in 1 run games and 2-4 in extras. Wherever you look, it’s a veritable eyesore.
At least part of the problem, as I’ve said on a number of occasions, is there is no penalty for failure. Contreras is going to collect 87 million dollars whether he hits .300 or .180. Matz could never win another game but will still collect 10 million dollars a year for the next four years, etc, etc. Hell, even Musial took a pay cut when he had a less than sterling year, as I recall. Not executing? So who suffers? Not these guys/

I agree with Arenado that the players aren’t executing, and that’s on them. But it’s not about “blame” so much as it is about “accountability.” The skipper is responsible for everything that happens on the ship whether he was directly at fault or not. And that’s on Marmol. Firing him would be the first step of many to holding the team accountable.
Yeah, CardFrance, too bad you can’t reinsure these guys with Lloyd’s of London…Or even a concept like Car Shield…You could call it, “Bum Shield” or even, “O’Neill Shield”…If he doesn’t turn over, fire and start, or a gearbox scatters, you get reimbursed for buying a Fiat.

So, what are they waiting on? I’m beginning to think Johnny just doesn’t like him and wants to see the suffer for a bit longer before he pulls the pin…
How many games have we lost that we LED going into the 9th? Isn’t it 5 or 6 already? Just brutal….
I don’t know about the 9th inning specifically but I do know that we have blown 15 out of 30 save chances. Not good.

Switching gears to Jordan Walker…From what I’ve seen, I’m reasonably certain his bat is Big League calibre, but I’ve been as appalled as anyone else by the presense of the glaring oven mitt. My question is wasn’t anyone at all in the Redbird organization aware of this tremendous liability before he was promoted to the Big Leagues? I mean, he played in 230 minor league games. I don’t follow minor league baseball, but I sure didn’t hear any stern warnings concerning his defense from any local media outfit in St. Louis. Was the daisy and butterfly oven mitt not placed on his glove hand until he was promoted? What’s the scoop on that?
1td, Walker played mostly 3B last year, so this season has pretty much been an experiment. He played a little OF last year, and you know it didn’t look pretty, but I’m sure they hoped it’d look better by now. Key word is hope.
The primary concern was Bill and Johnny sensed some fan excitement with Walker and figured, what the hell, let’s translate that to more fan revenue. Really, who doesn’t occasionally overlook a few crater-sized defensive liabilities? Just another pissing on a Cardinal tradition. It’s what happens when you have no real baseball vision after getting rid of most of your real baseball men.
It’s more than a little interesting that several Redbird players have ackonwledged responsibility for the team’s failures yet at the same time, the Cardinal manager has never once owned anything at all. Not even sorta… What’s that say about his character?

I was thinking along those lines, Euro. I thought he may have been horrible in the minor leagues too, but that those files may have been burned or placed into the sensitive information category. Anyone suspected of leaking these secrets would subject themselves to charges of treason…Haha!
Everybody’s face was stuck to a radar gun display drooling over the exit velocities, so no, nobody cared much about Walker’s defense. ‘If you can hit, we’ll find a position for you’ is probably the only thing they remember from reading about how baseball works.
I have to comment on this again…Where’d you get the paper bag, Euro? We only have the plastic variety…I tried one of those yesterday while watching on TV, but had to keep removing the thing to catch my breath between innings. I almost suffocated during that long visitor half of the 10th…Haha!
