It’s gotten so bad, that with a 5-2 lead in the 5th I am wondering what we will do to blow this one. Will it be a defensive miscue that opens the floodgates, or the bullpen’s poor command putting a couple of runners on and igniting a Giant (literally) rally?

Always thinking ahead. I think everyone in the ballpark and everyone here was thinking the same damn thing.

A little more honesty from Marmol in the post game: what happened today is “unacceptable.” Took him 69 games to say that, but it’s a start. He also said they gotta do something to start winning again. Unfortunately he didn’t say what that “something” is. Maybe he should start reading TCN to get some good ideas!

    .

If he did that he’d go and pack his bags.

This stuff everyday is unbelievable. Simply unimaginable. There really isn’t anything left to say….. but a lot will be said.

He could drive the team bus over a cliff.

Guessing that a walk will start the collapse is always a solid choice.

Oli is finding out this managing stuff is not as effortless and easy as Matheny and Shildt made it look.

Forget the bad breaks and lack of clutch hits, I don’t recall ever a Cardinals team having such a whatever approach to every game, nor our pitchers consistently missing location night after night.

They struck out 17 times 3 each Goldy and Nado. The Giants struck out 14 times but took advantage of our bullpen.

I don’t think anyone on this board has been advocating that Marmol should stay. I certainly haven’t been. They can fire him tomorrow and that would be fine with me.

But if we think that Stubby is going to stroll into the dugout and lead us to a world series soon then maybe we need to partake in some of those gummies sold in Colorado to calm down. We have bigger structural problems that go beyond what Stubby and/or Skippy could do. We won’t be a legit championship contender until DeWitt decides to change course in a major way.

Did the Missouri governor sign a bill saying that you can’t pitch for the Cardinals unless your ERA is over 4.00, but preferably over 5.55?

Well, you guys were saying that a lack of quality starts was the problem, but we have had quite a few of those lately. And, we’re scoring a decent number of runs. However, a complete collapse of the bullpen has done us in.
This club doesn’t know how to win.

Guys, you do not have to go to Colorado to buy gummies. They can be purchased in Illinois. They might cost a little more, but you save on travel expense.

Wait … have we stumbled on what the issue with the Cards Front Office could be?

Yep, you just knew it. Bad defense and bad bullpen makes for a bad ball club. Oh, and throw bad manager in there as well.

As Casey said, “Can’t anyone here play this game?” We can throw in, “Can’t anyone here manage this game?”

You gotta can Marmol at some point. Can’t keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. Get Noot back and clean up the outfield. The pitching is the tough one though. With that you gotta work the phones and look to be dealing anyone of value, which ironically is a couple of pitchers and not much else unless you deal Goldy or Arenado, or make a high risk deal with someone like Gorman. Otherwise sell low on some guys just to shake something up.

In an MVP season, Goldy batted 3rd all year. Why the change? Here’s the line up I’d go with.
    Vs LHP. VS RhP
    Walker LF Nootbaar CF
    Edman 2B. Gorman. 2B
    Goldy. 1B. Goldy. 1B
    Nado 3B. Nado. 3B
    Gorman DH. Walker. Lf
    Contreras C Burelson Rf
    Nootbaar CF Donovan. DH
    Carlson RF. Contreras C
    DeJong SS Edman. SS

    What do you think?

Blowing a 5-2 lead in the 9th is bad, but I don’t think this game was quite as devastating as the 5-0 lead that was squandered against the Pirates a couple of weeks ago. The Redbirds were playing pretty well and had closed to within 4.5 back prior to the start of that game. They’ve since gone 2-10. I recall Bikemike mentioning that game may end up being the proverbial straw. Looks like he was dead on right.

If you throw out Matz who was signed as a starter and has to now pitch in the bullpen b/c he is awful the Cardinal total salary for this year on the entire bullpen is $14 million according to Sportrac.

That seems ridiculously low to me coming into the year for a supposed contender unless you are the Rays or have a bunch of young arms in the pen (cardinals don’t). Now they could be gun shy b/c they have wasted a lot of money on some terrible signings in the past like Cecil and the guy from Kansas City/Colorado who did nothing, but the bullpen has cost them quite a few games this year and they really have nothing at AAA to help.

The one thing out of this disaster season is they at least will get a decent draft pick in 2024, and surely they now realize that they need a serious overhaul of their entire pitching staff for 2024, and an evaluation of their position players.

Handing the ball to your “closer” with a 2 run lead in the 9th isn’t bad managing. Every manager would do that. The problem is that we don’t have a closer. That is a front office problem.

At this point it is all mental anyway. The entire team is demoralized and doesn’t know what to do. The benefit of a managerial change is that maybe it gives the dugout a refresh, allows everyone to breathe for a minute, and maybe provides a spark. But it is not going to solve all the problems. It just won’t.

Yeah, he’s the NL MVP and all of a sudden he doesn’t belong in the 3 slot? It’s not at unlike the inane line-up he rolled out for the ’22 post-season. It goes against all reasoning to suddenly switch an approach that has consistently proved to be successful over an extended period of time. It’s just plain dumb.

The lineup construction didn’t lose today’s game. The bullpen crapped the bed, which was predictable.

David, I like your lineups better than what we have been seeing. Versus a lefty I would still use Donovan over DeJong. Heck, at this point I would DFA DeJong and bring up Winn and let him play. May as well start looking to the future.

I know some people say.. how does firing Marmol help our star hitters get that big 2 out hit or help out pitchers make that quality pitch with 2 on 2 out? Simple answer..they’d try harder for a manager they’d like. I’m not saying they don’t try but you can tell their approach to the AB is whatever, compared to last year when it was Yadi and Alberts last year… there was that extra oomph. There is none of that this year.

    What do you think?

Noot doesn’t have a platoon split at all, so there is no reason to shuffle the lineup needlessly. As to leadoff at least. When guys are in different positions in the lineup, they will get different looks and there role will be different. So I favor moving them around as little as possible.

I think you aced it, David. I’ve been convinced for some time that many players on this roster have 3 views of the Redbird manager…

    1. They don’t trust him.

    2. They don’t respect him.

    3. They simply don’t like the guy.

My personal view is that I don’t blame them.

Mike Matheny was sacked when the team was still one game above .500 and Mike Schildt was shown the door for reasons that had something to do with Plato. The Redbirds are now 15 games below .500 and have the worst record in the NL and are being managed by some guy who obviously couldn’t manage a pillow fight being staged at a grade school slumber party. Why in the world are we still being subjected to this guy?

Agree on Marmol. Not being in the clubhouse we really don’t know. But I rarely see any emotion or passion out of him.

Can you really believe in yourself when the manager is so stoic and passive?
