I really don’t detect much if any stoicism or passiveness coming from the guy. He strikes me as squirrely and stupid. The former probably rubbed off on him from his boss, and I think the latter is simply inherent.

That’s the thing, we don’t know as he is so laid back.

Wonder how long Stifel Financial keeps their logo on the uni’s? They are probably mulling over putting their advertising dollars elsewhere.

Never understood the Schildt flap with upper mgmt, thought he was a pretty good Manager and the players seemed to respect him. With Marmol I still wonder how the incident with O’Neil went over in the clubhouse. I am not to sure that was handled well on the Managers end.

I basically think since he won the division last year they will give him to the end of the year to turn it around and most likely he will not return next year. Though I do worry that they may be to stubborn to change direction, b/c it will mean they failed when they fired Schildt and picked Marmol over Schumacher.

I don’t see anyway this team can get back close to .500, there pitching is a disaster and they usually struggle to score more than 4 runs a game so it will be nearly impossible for him to right the ship and save his job for next year I would think.

Does anyone know if many boo birds were out in the ninth and tenth? I read something about more of it cropping up lately at Busch, which is highly unusual.

Greyghost, your comments are spot on. Shildt was a pretty good manager and his firing was a joke. It was an egotistical move made by the PBO.

And you are also correct in that firing Marmol will be tough for them to do because they don’t like admitting mistakes. It appears they may have no choice.

But I am not giving the players a pass in this debacle. Are you telling me that someone making millions of dollars can only perform well if someone in the dugout is patting them on head and saying go get ‘em? Maybe they should man up, show some pride and play ball.

A team’s on field performance is always an organizational effort. Whether a club wins or loses, everyone from the top dog to the 26th man is responsible.

As gscottar says, the players are at fault, as is management.

I think it is probably correct that Marmol will be retained for the entire season, and decisions won’t be made until October at the earliest.

As for the Shildt decision, it seemed Mike had some fire and passion. Maybe upper management did not like that. Maybe Ollie’s more quiet style is what they prefer. Mike got fired up and dropped f-bombs and perhaps that was not cool with the bigwigs.

Yes I think we all recognize that our ownership, front office, manager, and players should be embarrassed. This is a collective failure. I am still puzzled as to why you think Marmol is the ONLY problem.

You’re right. He’s not the only problem but when a season is going as bad as this you know who gets sacked.

Marmol should be fired. If our ownership actually thought we had a solid team and should be playing better, they would fire marmol sooner rather than later. Clearly they didn’t know and was relying on the idea of hope. Sure the players are just as much responsible. You can’t really single out a single issue, overall we struggle at everything just not at same time usually. Marmol should go but he shouldn’t go alone. Our gm hasn’t done his job and neither has our owner. You can’t fire the owner but everyone else should be on notice.

I don’t think the Shildt firing is as complicated and multidimensional as some think. He told us exactly why he thought it happened. He gave “recommendations” to Mo on how to improve the organization. He felt he was in a safe enough position to offer suggested improvements. Mo didn’t take the input as “recommendations” and viewed him as contrarian, or philosophically challenged. Shut up and follow the script, stupid. At least that’s what Shildt concluded after the zoom axing Mo and Bill delivered.

I hear you, but this leadership group won’t admit any mistakes. The fact Paul DeJong still has a job in the organization that is fuel for others to think there is no accountability for failure. Sometimes, some good healthy accountability is required to wake people up. PDJ should have been outright released long ago. There are plenty of things that can be done, but again, they won’t admit they got anything wrong.

I think it goes without saying the players have underperformed, but I’m not real sure how good this team really is.

The offense the past 3 or 4 years has been hot and cold and really struggled against a solid pitcher. You don’t know what you are going to get from any outfielder…though Walker is showing signs of being a pretty decent hitter at least….his defense is a work in progress.

The Bullpen was a strength last year and has totally imploded, wondering if the starters going so few innings the last few years has caught up to them. The starters are at best a bunch of #3 and #4 type starters….I would trade all of them at the deadline for prospects.

Shortstop has been a hitting black hole for 3 years, not even going to mention Catcher.

I also think the team defense has gotten dramatically worse this year, that to me is on the players.

Haha!…I didn’t recognize you, Euro, but yeah, Schildt probably put forth suggestions that reflected a sure sense of reason and logical thought. Johnny almost certainly felt threatened by that sense of reason and logic so he therefore made the decision to eliminate the threat. He’s smart enough to know not to surround himself with anyone who he perceives to be sharper than he thinks he is.

The only reason PDJ is on the roster is his contract. The Cards are notorious for not releasing players and just eating significant contracts. They are willing to eat large portions of contracts if they can get some prospects in a trade. They held onto Leake until Seattle was willing to give up prospects in return for Leake and cash. They did something similar with the Angels for Fowler.

I am willing to bet they are trying to work a similar deal with PDJ. I’m not convinced there will be anyone willing to offer much (like the other deals). If this fails, he will be in the Major League roster through the end of this year. Then I predict the Cards exercise the buyout and move on.

Just think of what this approach means for Matz’s tenure in St. Louis. We could have him in our bull pen for two seasons after this one.

We’re not getting any help tonight from the Cubs and Royals.

Cincinnati leads KC 7-1 in the 5th.

Pittsburgh leads the Cubs 5-1 in the 4th.

According to the box the attendance for today’s game was 39,615. This evening I was told by one of our neighbors that he and his daughter were in attendance for this afternoon’s game. He said there were no more than 20,000 fans for first pitch and by the time extras rolled around, he estimated less than 7500. He also said, “I didn’t think 7500 people could make that much noise”…

Lack of passion and belief in your team. I feel that after the 5th inning, if the starter gives up a hit… he’ll be pulled but Marmol has to ask himself.. what gives my team the best chance of winning? Bringing in a relief pitcher from an inconsistent bullpen or keeping my starter in and seeing if he can get thru this? And speaking of no passion, did you see the other night when Contreras said he was hit on the foot; but the umpire disagreed and the next pitch was a called 3rd strike right down the middle. My question is why didn’t Marmol at least back his player up?

This article says the Cardinals have 15 blown saves out of 30 chances. That is garbage.

On a good note…..the Cubs had a big inning and have stormed back to lead the Pirates 7-5 in the 7th.

Going to watch Kershaw pitch tonight. Me and Whitey Herdog will be on the couch with a cigar or two.

I’m really looking forward to the month of September because by my count this team has now suffered at least a dozen of the devastating sort of losses that are guaranteed to “build character” and will most assuredly “help this team in September”…”I’ll tell you that.” We may win 30 in a row.

What if…and it could be a big if…Skip Schumaker was the reason Oli Marmol didn’t completely suck last year?

I think it was more wanting to send Yadi and Albert off on a good note.. maybe they should take the same approach with Waino this year.

    We got a break.

Cubs came back and beat the Pirates again. 10-6 the final tonight.

Still only 8/8.5 out, whatever it is.
