Well, I called the first one. Thought I’d go for two. Goldschmidt and Carlson both hit the ball well, but at the defense. Oh well. Let’s go with Euro’s plan and win the next 2.
April 3, 2023 at 9:39 pm #215490Even with Woodford’s terrible second inning, and Hicks’ usual bad performance, the Cardinals still had a chance to win this game were it not for the worst balls/strikes umpiring I’ve seen since the last time I saw C.B. Buckner behind the plate.
I am against electronic balls and strikes because I think umpires are part of the game. But MLB should have a system where lousy umpires get sent back to wherever they come from after a performance like the one we saw today. And there should be no special allowance for umpires like C.B. Buckner and whoever this clown is that was umpiring today.April 3, 2023 at 9:43 pm #215492The best part of this game was in the 1st inning when Contreras did his Molina imitation and gunned down Acuna Jr. for the CS. He’s always looked good behind HP to me.
April 3, 2023 at 9:47 pm #215493Too big a whole dug early. Have to step up and take responsibility.
I’m talking about us posters, we didn’t make it happen. Actually, mud gets the lion’s share of the blame and is the goat. We had no chance after he cheated on the trivia questions.
1td, what’s the punishment?
April 3, 2023 at 9:57 pm #215494I forgot about that, Euro! I’m telling you, those evil baseball gypsies will get you every time someone even remotely connected to the game does something that’s entirely against the grain and unorthodox. You saw what happened when Marmol placed Donovan in the 5 slot…
April 4, 2023 at 12:46 am #215499Watching Woodford and Hicks is very frustrating to me. They can’t seem to get the third strike past the hitters. Granted the Braves have a great lineup.
Also found it odd to start Woodford start Mondays game instead of Tuesday’s. He would be in line to pitch the third game of the Brewers series. Maybe he will be pushed back with the off day Thursday.
April 4, 2023 at 1:37 am #215500I don’t know if the Cards were victimized by bad umpiring or not since I had an engagement and only saw the beginning of the game. But I did see Woodford benefit from a called strike three that was obviously a few inched off the inside corner. Don’t remember the batter, but it was a lefty.
I also saw that Noot was put on the IL and Yepez brought up. What is the latest word on the injury?
Woody I still have hope for, but not for Hicks. He throws 100 and they hit 100, or watch it miss the zone.
Thompson has been first man out of the pen a couple times now. We will have to see if he migrates to late innings.
April 4, 2023 at 4:23 am #215502Has anyone heard from Puglsey A?
April 4, 2023 at 4:26 am #215503How close were O’Neill and Walker to pulling back home runs? Both appeared to have their glove just to the side.

ParticipantDoes Zack deserve the next start in Waino’s slot?
April 4, 2023 at 7:52 am #215513Hasn’t Woodford earned more than one start? What do folks feel is a fair number of bumpy starts before making a change?
The best candidate(s) to replace him may be different if/when that time comes, but I would think they’d want someone to start who can throw more than 30-40 pitches. Otherwise, it can put too much pressure on the pen.
April 4, 2023 at 7:57 am #215514I’d say give Woodford at least 4 turns before sending him back to the pen.
I have to admit that I was thinking Quintana would be nice to have right about now….
April 4, 2023 at 7:58 am #2155153 I think is the safe answer. Unless he is horrendous in his next start, I think he gets up to 3 poor starts before a change is made. But it also depends on how Liberatore looks too (or some other more unlikely option).
April 4, 2023 at 7:59 am #215516Quintana is hurt. It wouldn’t be all that great to have him right now!
April 4, 2023 at 8:01 am #215518What happened to Woodford is different than what happened to Mikolas in one important way. Woodford pulled out of it and Mikolas didn’t.

I’m thinking close to what the others have said. I’d go two more times, maybe three. If all are stinkers, it’s time to put him back where he’s more comfortable.
Hey, the guy is on a 2 and 2/3 scoreless innings streak, lol.
April 4, 2023 at 12:53 pm #215528The inside scoop on Woodford outing, was Contreras calling way too many 4 seam fastballs.. He should be calling mostly sinkers and sliders, which are Woodfords best pitches. His 4 seam isn’t fast enough to use very often, just to equalize once in a while. Woodford was not comfortable shaking him off, as he is did just sign a huge contract…but, if Woodford can learn to shake off pitches and throw what he knows is a better pitch that day, he will be much better. Now if there is enough time with the pitch clock, I’m not sure…
April 4, 2023 at 2:24 pm #215538That’s interesting CardsFan552. I unfortunately (or fortunately) missed the first few innings and didn’t see any of that. Maybe that’s something Contreras, Woodford, Blake and Oli can learn from and adjust.
April 4, 2023 at 5:13 pm #215557Bling, how can you say Woodford got it together and Mikolas didn’t? Woodford gave up 6 runs in the first 2 innings. Then, he walked a guy in the third. And then he walked another guy and threw a wild pitch in the 4th, plus has 2 hard hit liners that inning – one that was really deep. Is that getting it together?
Mikolas’ 3rd inning was strikeout, single, strikeout, strikeout. That’s pretty darn good. Then in the fourth he gave up a ground ball infield single to Springer, struck out another guy, and then gave up a hard hit ground ball single and was relieved by Thompson who gave up a sac fly to score 1 run. Is that substantially worse? I don’t get this comment at all. I’d much rather have ground balls and strikeouts than walks, wild pitches, and hard hit line drives to the wall. Sure, Mikolas did allow 1 run vs 0 from Woodford after the 2nd, but his pitching was far, far better.
April 4, 2023 at 5:26 pm #215559CardsFan552…Well, if it’s indeed the case that Woodford felt uncomfortable shaking off his catcher, that’s on Woodford. Woodford’s well aware that those 3 HR’s and 6 ER’s are charged to him and not his catcher, so he needs to be well aware, and I’m certain that he is, that it’s his job to shake off his catcher any time at all that he feels he should do so. The net bottom line is the same as it’s always been. The pitcher ultimately dictates the pitch that leaves his hand.
April 4, 2023 at 6:27 pm #215566I’d guess that Blake set a bad game plan before I’d blame the catcher, but I agree that the pitcher is ultimately responsible.
I had typed out a reply to the Mikolas deflection attempt, but decided to just let it go.

ParticipantI didn’t see this game. If Woodford was scripted to rely on his fastball, then I believe that’s on whoever is scripting not Woodford. That’s not Woodford forte. Now Woodford has more than earned more chances so his spot shouldn’t be hastily given up.i think he will be fine but we will see. He’s pitched very well the last two seasons in limited duty but it might not be his year. We will see.

Participant1tough. totally agree with you. it is indeed on Woodford. He has to understand that its his game, not the catchers game… he is responsible for the runs, nobody else. I do believe he has learned this and we will see much better from him. I’m sure part of the problem was having Molina back there so long, pitchers would rarely shake him off, as he was one of the best at calling games.!! we will see.
I do think Woody will get it together. ! -
