These reliever from day one guys confuse me. Especially when the org pays a big int. signing bonus for him. All the more because he does not have a sparkly double digit K/9. It is solidly 9+ though. That would be the draw when coupled with touching triple digit velo.

His history on TCN top prospects list should be remarked upon. 2021 he opened at #24, likely due to the outsized bonus. 2022 dropped back to #44, and he opened 2023 not on the top 50 list at all. Then, in season, shot up as high as 20, I believe, before settling in the mid 20s. I note that he finished in the low 20s on the Cardinals official site, so the cleaning lady is impressed as well. So he has ping ponged around the list, but I think we could agree that during the course of this season he has elevated himself from longshot to legit ML prospect. Whatever his final AFL stats are, he will need to excel in the upper levels of the system before we start hyperventilating. His swing and miss potential and the org’s determination to get something for the money make it a good time to be Mr. Nunez.

Nunez was extremely wild. He seems to have calmed down this past year. I think he can build on that. Maybe see if he excels at AA/AAA in 2024 and keep his K:BB ratio above 2.0.

Roby a lot of strike outs and too much traffic. We will see what happens next year.

Scott is in the top 25 AFL batters in BA and OBP, with the .394 OBP expecially getting my attention. He also is tied for the SB lead with 12. I also not that he has only struck out 5 times, against 9 walks. One of the issues with speed guys is whether they can get on base enough for it to matter. He certainly did that well enough in AA this year. If he maintains it early in AAA, sane and sober observers can start thinking about hyperventilating. I do wonder what Mo and the gang are thinking, and to what extent Scott’s impressive year might affect the moves this winter. Take deep breaths Mo, lots of guys look good in the Texas League.

The other day Brian mentioned that Gary LaRoqcue was in the house for the AFL game while WS game 5 was underway just down the street. I was thinking, man, he really wanted to see that game, and I assumed he was there to see Hjerpe mostly, and Crooks as a bonus. But there may have been one or more non-Cardinals farm hands he was interested in seeing just now. Might he have been deployed for that purpose?

bling, LaRocque comes to the AFL every year. The fact the Fall Stars Game is Sunday and the MLB GM Meeting is here starting Tuesday helps explain the timing. I doubt there is more to it than that.

As an aside, we spoke for 15-20 minutes on general subjects that will find their way into future articles. Among those I also chatted with this week is Paul Davis, now Braves Director of Pitching Development. He used to be with the Cardinals.

Scott sure looks like a player. I bet Mo gets plenty of phone calls this winter.

I was following for a few innings on gameday. In the first he doubled and then stole third but hitters following couldn’t even put it in play. I thought to myself, that is just like we saw from the Cardinals this year.

Roby is very good, but I think everybody knew that. With him, arm health is the concern. Missing months with a bum shoulder so early in his career is a huge red flag, but returning without diminished effectiveness is encouraging. Mo wouldn’t have been able to get him for a rental if not for the issue, so it was a bold and risky move. Lets hope for the best with him since he could be a weapon out there.
