Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – October 26, 2023

The Scottsdale Scorpions trounced the Peoria Javelinas on Wednesday. Five Cardinals played. The Cardinal Nation Player of the Day Jimmy Crooks singled, doubled, walked, drove in three and scored. Victor Scott and Jeremy Rivas started with Cooper Hjerpe and Andre Granillo pitching in relief.

Scottsdale Scorpions 13 at Peoria Javelinas 4

Five St. Louis Cardinals prospects contributed to Scottsdale’s decisive win at Peoria on Wednesday. Three were in the starting lineup and two pitchers appeared in relief.

Victor Scott led off. The center fielder went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. In the first inning, Scott flied out to center.  He grounded into a force out in the second and grounded out to second in the third. In the fifth, Scott laid down a bunt single. He was hit by a pitch and later scored in the seventh. Scott thumped a solo home run in the eighth.

Catcher Jimmy Crooks is our Player of the Day. The number five hitter singled, doubled, walked, drove in three and scored a run.  In the first inning, Crooks singled to left field and drove in a run. The catcher drew a walk in the third and later scored. In the fourth, Crooks doubled in a run. In the sixth, he struck out. Crooks plated a run on a sac fly in the seventh. He flied out to center in the ninth.

Shortstop Jeremy Rivas batted seventh. He was 0-for-4 with an RBI. Rivas popped out to first base in the second inning. He drove in a run on a sac fly in the third. The shortstop popped out to third in the fifth inning and struck out in the sixth. In his final at-bat, Rivas grounded out to the pitcher.

Cooper Hjerpe relieved the starter in the fifth inning and allowed no hits or runs and struck out one.

Andre Granillo pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out one, though he allowed two singles.

Scottsdale is 12-8 on the season. The Scorpions are tied with the Surprise Saguaros for first place.

Thursday’s game:  No game scheduled.
