Edman in CF helps block the underachieving parade of DH/1Bman trying to play corner outfield. Edman in CF clearly defines the outfield roles.
With Carlson and Donovan both coming off season ending injuries, trading Edman this winter seems short sighted, especially if Winn starts at SS.

Being able to play SS and being able to play it well in the majors are two different things. Heck, Donovan can play SS… in a pinch. But none of them should backfill for any period of time.
When the Cards needed IF help late in the season, they added less-promising guys like Querecuto, Fermin and Lopez. But Prieto didn’t get the call. P.S. As a Memphis Redbird, he played zero games at short, even after Winn had been called up. That says a lot.
Because I haven’t seen Saggese in person, I asked scouts I trust about him. I did not get good reports about his defense at short.
Being repetitive, especially if Edman is in the CF picture, an outside reserve SS addition would be wise. None of the guys they have added recently major at being a SS. Not sure what they are going to do with six or eight second basemen.

Fermin, Kennedy, Jung don’t make the cut at spring training. Edman gets traded. Gorman and Donovan stick. Saggese and Prieto get an invite to spring training, with both available for callup when needed and if warranted. Sign a free agent SS that can play defense. It would be awkward, but DeJong sure fits the bill in this scenario. Or……….figure something else out.

Over the past few years, it has seemed Cardinal players have to have an OBP over .400 at Memphis to find success at the MLB level. I generally count on a 50-70 point drop in OBP from AAA to MLB.
Winn had an OBP of .359 at Memphis. There is room for improvement at the AAA level.

Congrats to all those guys and thanks to Brian for the coverage. We should see some or all in ML camp.
I was especially happy to see our pitchers getting a lot of strike outs and Scott looking like a lead off man of the future. Important needs that we might be able to fill in house.

Same. Carlson hasn’t even been the JD Drew type at this point in his career. It seemed at the time like Mozeliak was hoping to prop him up, but maybe he took at as pressure. Usually the coaches kids turn out above their class, but Dylan has been basically average at best and nothing more.
Despite leaving school after his junior year, Victor Scott stayed at it and is graduating this weekend.
