Having Gallegos start the 7th started the dominos.
That was part of it, but I also felt like removing Q after he got Schwarber was the real start of it. Smells a lot like some stat warrior declaration filtered down from the front office for Marmol’s pre-game managing points that said Q can’t face Hoskins and Realmutto a 3rd time.
I hated the move to bring in Helsley in the 8th for 5 outs and with two LHH coming up. I tweeted about it. Then Marmol was way too slow to pull Helsley and when he did the fireman he used was actually an arsonist. Pallante since the beginning of September has been horrible: 5.91 ERA, 5.27 FIP, more walks than strikeouts and a .341 opponent batting average. Heck opponents had a .897 OPS during that span.
Marmol showed everyone he was a rookie manager today. The bright lights of the playoffs were too much for him.
I spent the week typing lefties vs Philly. I’ll stop there, because the box score gives the handedness results.

Yes but Ollie made a big deal about having flexability with the pitching and then sat on his hands in the 9th inning as Helsley imploded. Why even have 3 LHP on the staff if you don’t trust them to get you out of the 8th inning? Not only that but wasn’t the defense set to double play position when you bring in a guy to get a double play?
This team isn’t coming back from this loss, especially with Marmol as the manager. I had to watch Matheny manage for 5-years and this was that level of incompetence.
All the go get them tomorrow is fine and the right thing to say. But this one stings. Goldy still not hitting. Nola is a good pitcher.
The mistakes made with the bullpen have been going on all year! Many here have pointed them out! OM does NOT do a good job making those decisions! We were spoiled with TLR and now you see how the other half lives!
That too, Oliver. When your MVP is giving very little for so long, it’s no wonder the Cards aren’t scoring.
I thought the Cards needed more runs the entire second half of the game. The Pujols double play ball with no body out hurt, big time. Almost time to start talking about off season acquisitions.
I’ve sure seen quite a few, but not sure if any of them were quite that bad. The BB to Harper should have ended Helsley’s day. And why was the IF played in with 1 out and the bases jammed when it was still a 1 run game? It’s not just inane. It doesn’t even qualify for nonsense…Only consolation is that there’s another game. But it doesn’t bode well at all.
I didn’t like removing Q with only 75 pitches and cruising. That puts pressure on your bullpen, especially in a 0-0 game where you might be looking at more than nine innings.
Now we are facing two straight elimination games. Gotta get ‘em tomorrow.
We are the better team during the season – a +135 run differential compared to +62 for the Phils. But they were without Harper a good part of the year.
Anything can happen in a game featuring two closely match clubs. Gotta get some offense tomorrow and take the pressure off the hurlers. Nola is real good though. I get a sense that we missed our opportunity with this one. But that is mostly our human tendency to expect failure. Let’s hope things go better tomorrow.

Pujols hit 2nd. Why? This just blew my mind from Jump.
My next observation was when we blew the lead in the 9th. Was Pallante up already because If I had to guess the answer was clearly no. With your closer on his 2nd inning and his finger still ailing. You’ve got to have plan b in motion.
Now my next question is who closes tomorrow and Sunday? Let’s hope for a Mikolas complete game shutout or a blowout win because that’s what we’ll need to make it to Sunday after Oli completely lost his marbles with the pen and the lineup (2-4 especially) went MIA.
Gallegos will be the call tomorrow but beware. We could see the same events unfold like today. lol
bicyclemike, I concur with you on Quintana. He should have been left in to complete six innings, minimum, then bring in Hicks in the 7th. It’s easy to manage from the living room (or the third deck as it was for me today), but this loss is mostly on Marmol. Very bad bullpen management. It was blatantly obvious from the stands, even without any radio or TV commentary, that Helsley was left in at least two batters too long. He was struggling from the beginning of the ninth. Marmol should announce today that Flaherty is the closer, period. Hicks and Gio leverage in the 8th and 9th as needed with Matz and Stratton in the ready. It’s playoff time so can’t make mistakes like leaving pitchers in too long, call it “playoffs 101.” Marmol needs to understand that.
When pitching isn’t your strength, the guys you pay to hit have to hit. But if pitching isn’t your strength, that is the problem.
This is what happens when you go against conventional wisdom. It started with the lineup card. Pujols in the 2 slot? Table setter Donovan in the 5 slot? Possibly the slowest man in MLB placed in the the 8 slot in front of your biggest threat on the basepaths? It gets better. You go get your series opening SP’er when he’s at 75 pitches, cruising, and has easily handled both Schwarber and Harper? You know a guy has a problem with the middle finger on his throwing hand and can plainly see he has zero command of the strike zone and you leave him in there? Now it gets real good. You still hold a 1 run lead with the bases jammed and 1 out and you pull the IF in? Is there no such thing as DP depth? I’m asking a lot of questions, but I have one more…Am I crazy, or should this loss be pinned on Marmol?
How is pitching not a strength? The Phillies scored zero thru 8 innings and a usually reliable Ryan Helsley was pitching the ninth.

Helsley clearly hurt/off and now also burned for tomorrow.
If the Cardinals win tomorrow then I think they also win Sunday – but after today and with the closer not available – I think Philly ends it tomorrow.
GameCard…The usually reliable injured Helsley was working the 9th. The guy you saw that couldn’t grip the baseball well enough to find the strike zone…
Lot’s of late inning/bullpen stuff here; Let’s talk about the offense that put us in ‘no margin of error’ territory. Nothing from Pujols, Molina, Goldschmidt. 0-11 and 0-3 w/ runners in scoring position. One extra base hit, the Yepez HR. No SB, no bunts, no moving runners, just swing away and wait for the HR. Goldschmidt is on a month long slump and Molina has hit nothing since his return. Mo needs to consider moving Goldy down the order (Edman, Donovan, Arenado, Pujols, Goldschmidt) and should have PH for Yadi in the ninth. Yes a Yadi HR would have been a great feel good moment but the odds of that happening is like Denver going for the 64 yd. FG. I would hate for Yadi’s last moment as a Card to be a K like that one today.
